Campbell Camps First Again in Street Stocks, "Let's Go Joe" Chevalier Fourth Different Sprint Victor!

Warrensburg, Missouri

Starting out the 2003 racing season at the "Home of the Mighty Modifieds", Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg, defending modified champ "Fast" Richard Layne had a bad first night. Very bad. His Bobby Hunt race machine blew the engine sky high two laps into the hot laps. No start, no points, next to last on the points list. He finished third the second week, second in the third racing card, won the first Big One of the year and $2,000 then marched right back to win again Saturday night. His victory was a mere car length over second through fourth finishers, 'the gang from Concordia', Jason 'trouble' Thompson, Alan "IGA" Deatherage and 'Movin' Dave Meyer. Schultz copped fifth.

Tim Karrick from Basehor, Ks scored tops in the modified 'B' feature.

The five qualifying heat race winners included "Fast" Richard, 'Chargin' Charlie Ebert, Deathergae, Robert Kluender and Thompson.

Halfway through the event, Leeton's Tracy 'country boy' Wolf rode too high on the high banks in three and four and went over the edge. He flipped several times in his new Machine. He walked away unscathed, but the car needed assistance.

After pitting for a few years with CMS' 2003 Limited Late Model champ Bruce Curry out of Clinton, Daren "rookie" Rapp from the same hometown decided to give the sport a shot. To do so… he must have used a cannon. The 41 year-old newcomer outsmarted the rest of the big, experienced field to win his first ever feature event in only his fifth outing. Marc 'the dweeb' Carter recovered from a spin for second, teammate Curry was third, fourth was found by Kevin 'kid' Coyne while "Mountain Boy' Owen Evinger had a great run at fifth.

Unfortunately, and on a very sad note, 12 year CMS veteran Ltd. Late Model pilot Lee Nevels, after again testing the new 'ride' for his son Derek, suffered cardiac arrest in the pits after the event. He was transported from the track to a Kansas City heart trauma hospital. He later passed away. Other details were unknown at this writing.

It was a weird déjà vu situation in the Street Stock main event. Brooks, again, took off at the start. Brooks, again… dropped his second drive shaft in as many weeks. That left the door open Sedalia's current Street Stock dominator…. Clayton Campbell. Campbell is so hot this year that in nine showings between CMS and the fairgrounds in Sedalia, he has won 5 times. It was also Campbell's second, double-win weekend. Last week's now familiar Steve Hammon was a close second while crowd favorite, especially among the female fans, Tammy Korff pushed her way through from 12th to third. Roger Millward and Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler were fourth and fifth.

It was all-Chevalier week as 'Let's Go' Joe Chavalier outran his dad Dan for the win while younger brother Matt 'the hat' was third, fourth was pulled down by hot rookie Mike McMillin and Kevin Kearney was fifth.

During the third Street Stock qualifying heat, Dan Colhour from Warrensburg slipped off the high-side edge in turns one and two then rolled his car four to five times side-to-side. He was not injured, but the car was. His sturdy roll cage was not bent.

Kingsville's Brooke Sechrest and Amy Kephart from Holden represented race sponsor Country Kitchen in victory circle to hand the trophies to all the winners.

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS

Doing it again for the second year, the WOFC Sprints displayed their 'ready to race' sprint car that will again be raffled off on their "Sprint Car Rumble" race night on July 12th. The raffle tickets are two bucks a pop, three tickets for 5 dollars. Here's your chance to find by far the least expensive way to get into racing. Nice 'piece', built by well known sprint vet Al Baldus and driven by rookie Jason McCrackin last year. It's Datsun powered. They'll be raffling those tickets every race night through the intermission of their 'rumble'. Better not wait, gettem' while ya' can.

Both Deatherage and Meyer jumped up to the 'edge' to try the route these two 'bank-masters' like so well. For some reason, it wasn't good enough to squeeze by "Fast" Richard this time.

'Hot Dog' regular Tom Charles was doing another, famous through the pack charge, but for the second time in two race nights this weekend his machine broke. A bad week for the rooster. But he seems to always recover 'double-strong'.

Looked like 'the dweeb' Carter was going to possibly corral another win, but s spinning miscue in turn one, which also collected hot runners Coyne and early leader veteran Buddy Blain, set them all to the rear.

It looked like 'Rookie Rapp' had 'lost face' after his first-ever win. The reason. He was smiling so wide. Everybody was expecting a big party for the Clinton housed racing team as team mate Bruce Curry was right behind him in second. Carter's run back to the number two spot stopped that. Curry was still a strong third. They probably had plenty to 'party-hard' about anyway.

Rapp's 'cannon' just happens to be the car he purchased from CMS' 2002 Ltd. Late Model champ David Gemes. That car was, and still is a cannon, no doubt. Both David and Donnie Gemes are this year fielding full-bore Late Models.

This coming Saturday’s race card is highlighted as the 7th Annual “RSC Rental Service Street Stock Bash”, which had to be rescheduled early in the season. The wild and wooly division will run extra laps, for extra dollars. Of course, as always, the other three classes will also compete. Gates will open again at 5 pm, hot laps at 7 with the first race off the line at 7:30 pm.

Tom;

As always, great write-up. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me Saturday night. I didn't want you to think that I don't like the show at the 'berg, cause it is one of the best around. I would be the first in line if they ever brought some big block late models to the track! Next year should be even better with all the new grandstands and the big payout for the mighty mods! Man, the Rooster sure was hooked up again, one of these nights he'll not have a mechanical and end Fast Richard's winning streak. I was saddened to here of Mr. Nevels passing, perhaps the drivers can do a "pass the helmet" fundraiser through the grandstands on Saturday? See you at the races.

Respectfully,
Sam
