AT CMS, CLAYTON CAMPBELL CONTINUES WINNING WITH RSC "BASH" CASH; KARRICK COMPLETES TWIN WIN WEEKEND IN MODS!

Coyne Collects More LLM Coins; Three Weeks, Third Chevalier Streaks in Sprint Main!

by Tom Wilson-pma
Saturday, June 7th, 2003
Warrensburg, Missouri

Having become a top name in Street Stock competition during the beginning of this racing season, Sedalia's Clayton Campbell scored his best night yet as he won the 20 lap, 6th Annual RSC Rental Service "Street Stock Bash" Saturday night at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg. Like the fans and other racers had to do, threatening weather caused light sprinkles early in the show, which later gave up and ended as a starry night.

Campbell drove his winning numbers up to six out of nine attempts so far; three at CMS and three more at Sedalia's State Fair Speedway on Friday nights.

Veteran Modified racer Tim Karrick from Basehor, Kansas , now fielding his 'Skyrocket' chassied "short track" car, came off a special win the night before at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas while driving his "Harris brand, long track" machine. Karrick passed, then held off, a stellar field of 38 other "Mighty Modifieds" to roll home the victor in the Farm and Home of Warrensburg/ T-Mobil main event and to make his weekend a "doubler". His figured take for the two nights; $2200!

Blue Springs' Kevin 'kid' Coyne had to borrow a car last week to stay in the Country Kitchen Limited Late Model points run. He couldn't fix his 'regular ride' in time. Getting his familiar race car back this week, he squeezed by a multitude of other top LLM comps to capture his second main event this year.

Two weeks ago, the Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint winner was 'Dad' Dan Chevalier. Last week, son 'lets go' Joe Chevalier. This week? The other son, Matt 'the hat' Chevalier, all three from Belton. The only WOFC duo sprint winner so far, Kenny Potter, had to settle for second.

The start of the 20 circuit Street Stock 'bash' saw an almost unbelievable happening take place…. A triple déjà vu! Two race-nights ago, John 'the boomer' Brooks led early in the main but his drive-shaft fell out. Last week, Brooks had the early lead but three laps into he fray, his car dropped it's drive-shaft. And at the start of this week's more laps for more dollars affair, two laps into the race…...his drive-shaft fell out!

That opened the door for Gary Hemme to take the lead, but on lap three 'carefree' Campbell zipped by for the helm on the low side of turn two. It was a couple of laps later that Hemme's power-plant blew sky-high. For the most part, Clayton stayed well ahead of the pack the whole way.

Turning in a heck of a drive for second at Hershel Thompson's flying checkers was Doug 'cowboy' Warren, who started in 19th. Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler, still the current points leader, rushed up from 13th to 3rd, fourth was picked up by female-fans favorite Tammy Korff from 12th while fifth was all Steve Cope's, who had to start 18th from the 'B'.

Pleasant Hill hot-shoe Steve Hammons won the 10 lap 'last chance' feature. He slashed his way to third in the main, but momentarily got too high in turn two. He still salvaged tenth.

Warrensburg's own Dean Wille was in super-fast form at the start of the 20 lap modified main, and looked to be running away from a stout field of mod chauffeurs. Karrick picked his way forward using both the low and high paths on the wide-open, many grooved track and was able to close the leader's lead. Karrick bested Wille out of two on lap 13. While he 'skyrocketed' up front, 6-time CMS modified champ "Fast" Richard Layne got around Wille to the outside and got on Tim's rear bumper. But a lap later, Wille jumped back to challenge and Layne ran out of room on the third turn 'edge', dropped off a wheel or two and brought out the yellow. Richard was relegated back to the rear of the pack.

With only three laps to go, Terry 'the terminator' Schultz came out of 'nowhere' and multi-passed the comps to finish a strong second after starting tenth, Alan Deatherage was 'I.G.A. Proud' yet again for third, consistent Jason Thompson was comfortable in fourth and Wille held on for fifth. Sixth through tenth places were picked up by Tom Charles, who put on another super-show for the crowd after starting 21st from the 'B', Dowell, Chargin' Charlie Ebert, Charlie Laizure and Steve 'tweety' Twenter.

Winners of the six, eight lap qualifiers were Steve Watkinson, Wille, Movin' Dave Meyer, Karrick, Jimmy Dowell and Thompson.

The pair of 'B' main victors were Oak Grove's 'the bad shad, Shad Badder and Grandview's 'Smokin Joe Walker.

Veteran stock car ace Buddy Blain took the initial lead at the start of the 15 circle Limited Late Model main. He looked mighty strong to Coyne, who flew to second and hounded Blain until lap 8 when he was able to take advantage of a small slip and cop the top spot. Blain continued to bug Coyne back, but had to settle for second behind the now two-time winner, and points leader. "Mountain man' Mark Evinger was a close third, fourth was found by ex-straight liner Garry Billings, Jr. while the 2001 CMS champ, Bruce Curry, scurried to fifth.

Good at handling starts and restarts, Matt Chevalier overhauled early leader Kenny Potter for the lead, and win, in their WOFC Sprint car feature. Potter had to hold some other Chevaliers back for the finalized second spot as Matt's bro' Joe wound up third while Jimmy Garner and 'dad' Dan Chevalier fought tooth and nail the whole way. Garner double-re-passed for fourth, leaving Dan fifth.

Hamilton's Brandy Cummings awarded the smiling winner's hardware in victory lane.

CMS BITS FROM THE PITS

Many hearts were heavy with the absence of long time Super Stock/ Ltd. Late Model racer Lee Nevels from Higginsville, who passed way last Saturday night in the pits after running sixth in his feature event. Evidence was there that he was sorely missed. Son Derek climbed into his car, while retired racer Kenny 'tow truck' Holmes drove the late Lee's #44 stocker, both idling clockwise around the track during a moment of silence and the national anthem. A special sticker in memory of Lee was attached to all the drivers' cars for the rest of the season, and the fans dug deep into their pockets, and hearts, to give to the Nevels fund. And, racing for the first time as a true rookie, Derek zipped his #88 machine across the line in eighth. N ice accomplishment, a very nice memoriam. Because, Lee was a great guy to know. Proof again that there truly is a 'racin' family' within this great sport.

'Smokin' Joe Walker had his familiar numbered 51 car break for the night in his modified qualifier, then got to borrow John Brooks modified machine. He started last in the 'B' and won it, and was 'flyin' low' in the main until the Brooks car gave up and ……'smoked' out. By the way, Joe doesn't smoke… but the 'boomer's' car most certainly did ...big-time!

What's with 'the hat' always being added to winner Matt Chevalier's moniker? Other than the rhyme, he's called 'the hat' because he wears one often…… backwards… which is nothing new worldwide.. but IS different in the CMS pits. Now there's a big 'pit bit' for ya'.

Happiness from all again to Glyda Jaeger (the CMS' long time chief statistician) who is celebrating yet another birthday. She turned thirty nine Saturday…. however, if I remember correctly, she was 39 last year…. and the year before that… and…… well, you'll never be able to figure out the true 'numbers' anyway. She's the only one that knows… Why? She's a statistician, of course!

As if one Charles wasn't enough to have to compete with, now there's another! Danny Charles, son of Tom 'rooster' Charles, showed up and ran at CMS for his first time ever Saturday night. He scored double rookie of the year AND championship crowns when driving a street stock at Lakeside and Heartland Park the year before last. Last year, he ran a lightning sprint car. He got used to the 'high-banks' quickly. Keep you eye on the 81 Jr. car.

This coming Saturday night's card is titled as the Pepsi/Bud Racing "1K Modified Special #1". High dollars will be out for the taking in the "Mighty Modified" division, with $1,000 going to the winner, $900 for second, third pays $800, $700 for fourth, fifth for $600 and stays very close in register the rest of the way down the total purse list.
