For the time being the dirt has settled at CMS as last Saturday night the 2006 Contingency Connection racing season came to a close. All five of this year’s divisions saw their champions crowned in front of another dedicated group of fans in the stands even as skies threatened to spoil the night’s racing program. The 2006 track champions by division are, Aaron Marrant of Richmond, MO in the ‘Mighty’ Modifieds; Brett Rollert of Smithville, MO in the Limited Late Models; Jimmy Ngo of Independence, MO in the Street Stocks; Josh Fisher of Smithton, MO in the 305 Sprint Cars; and Tony Nelson of Blue Springs, MO in the B-Modifieds. New drivers registered right up to the final night of action adding to the total number of racers who competed at the track this year. The overall registered number of drivers who scored points this year was 231. By division, the breakdown consists of 87 ‘Mighty’ Modifieds; 60 Street Stocks; 37 Limited Late Models; 24 B-Modifieds; and 23 Sprint Cars. The average car count for the season was 81 as the ‘Mighty’ Modifieds led the average nightly car count for the year with 30. The track welcomed its loyal following of fans and drivers for 17 nights of competition in 2006 and experienced three rain-outs for the year. The low car count of the year was registered on July 29th with 67 cars in attendance with the highest car count of the year being registered on August 19th with 99 cars in attendance.

In the ‘Mighty’ Modifieds there were a total of 71 heat races competed with 31 different drivers visiting victory lane. Of those drivers, it was Clinton, Missouri’s Dennis Walrath who scored the most heat-race wins with 9. Joe Bradshaw of Sedalia had 7 heat-race victories while Marrant found his way to victory lane 6 times in the heat races. There were 10 “B” main events ran this year with 10 different winners. With the deep field of modified talent competing on a weekly basis at CMS feature-race victories were highly sought after by all drivers competing on the high banks. In 17 feature races competed, there were only four repeat winners as a total of 11 different drivers found their way into victory lane in a main-event race. Walrath and Lee Hibner of Chillicothe, MO each scored two feature victories while Bradshaw and Marrant registered three apiece. Jason Hughes of Oklahoma; Gary Blackburn, Jr., of Fulton, MO; and Terry Schultz of Sedalia, MO were the special big-money event winners during the season.

At the start of the year in the Limited Late Model division no one could have ever guessed that they would be a witness to total domination of one class but that’s just what happened as Smithville, MO driver Brett Rollert distanced himself from his competitors week after week. Rollert scored 12 heat race victories out of 35 competed for an impressive 34% heat-race win ratio! Nine other drivers also scored heat-race triumphs with Kevin Coyne of Kingsville, MO grabbing 7 wins and James Rutledge of California, MO picking up four victories. Seven different drivers raced their way to feature-race victories with Rollert the only driver able to repeat. His all-division leading 11 feature-race triumphs out of 17 races competed adds up to an even more impressive 64% race-win ratio. Of the 52 Limited Late Model races ran this year Rollert had a total of 23 total victories for an overall 44% race-win tally! Rollert also had the longest feature race win streak with seven victories in a row to close the season, with one of those victories coming in the division’s lone big-money race event for the year.

The most fiercely contested points championship battle of the year came courtesy of the Street Stock division. In 54 total heat races 20 different winners posted victories. Although points champion Ngo scored just 2 victories this year, his consistency and patience coupled with his smooth driving style paid dividends as he edged out his closest competitors for the title. Marc Carter of Warrensburg, MO garnered 6 heat-race victories as Tammy Korff of Fulton, MO; Jay Lyle of Warrensburg, MO; and Chad Eickleberry also of Warrensburg each nailed down 5 heat-race wins. Five “B” main events were contested with 5 different drivers visiting victory lane respectively in those races. For the main event feature races a total of 8 different competitors visited victory lane in 17 races contested. Gary Hemme of Sedalia, MO led the field with 4 victories as Carter and Lyle each nabbed 4 apiece. Nathan Himes of Clinton, MO and James McMillin of Warrensburg, MO each posted 2 feature-race wins. Terry Schultz won the lone big-money race of the year in the Street Stock division as he hopped out of his ‘Mighty’ Modified for one night only and raced his way to victory in what many fans called the “race of the year.”

Although the 305 Sprint Cars were not on hand every night to compete this year at CMS you can look back on the season and quickly figure out that young Smithton, MO driver Josh Fisher had the track figured out after the first green flag of the year was dropped back in early May. Fisher was one of 8 drivers to visit victory lane in 18 heat races contested and picked up 5 heat-race victories along the way to lead this category. Zach Goulden of Gladstone, KS scored 4 heat wins while Christi Hoenshell of Greenwood, MO raced her way to 3 heat-race triumphs. It was Hoenshell who scored one of the year’s most popular feature victories of the year with her early July feature win. Hoenshell actually commented that “she could hear the fans cheering for her on the last lap” while still at full throttle. All total, there were 5 drivers who scored feature-race victories in 13 races contested with Zach Goulden, the only other repeat winner besides Fisher posting 2 wins. Fisher tallied up 8 overall feature-race wins with 5 of the victories coming in successive weeks of racing, which adds up to an impressive 61% win ratio and the title of 305 Sprint Car Champion for 2006.

New to the CMS racing divisions this year was the consistently growing in numbers B-Modifieds. With just a few drivers competing in this exciting new class towards the beginning of the season many were wondering if the class would survive; however, throughout the season the car counts continued to grow and the drivers continued to impress in some of the most hotly contested feature races ran during the season. Eleven different drivers picked up heat-race wins in 25 races contested with Marc Evinger of Bates City, MO leading the win column with 4 victories as D. J. DeMotte of Bonner Springs, KS; Jeff Meeker of Peculiar, MO; and Chris Akers of Higginsville, MO each tallying 3 wins apiece. Evinger also led the feature race win column with 6 trips to victory lane while young driver Tyler Lewis of Columbia, MO scored 5 wins and Wayne Stevens of Norborne with 3 wins were the only repeat winners of the 6 different drivers who visited victory lane in 17 feature races contested. Tony Nelson of Blue Springs, MO was crowned the champion for the year and was the only driver to register perfect attendance in this new division. Nelson scored a heat-race win on the way to the point’s crown. Look for this class to continue to grow as several drivers both young and old continue building cars for this budget-friendly division for the 2007 season.
