C.M.S. Defeats the Rain … as Lee Hibner, Jason Estes, Gary Hemme, Josh Fisher and Mark Evinger defeat their Racing Competitors to take Feature Event Wins!

Warrensburg, MO

On a night with threatening weather all around, Earl and Susan Walls and the entire C.M.S. crew provided a lightning quick racing surface and a fast-paced night of racing action to all who came and witnessed a good old Saturday night weekly racing program. Some say “Loyalty” can be defined as a feeling or attitude of devoted attachment and affection towards someone or something. Well, if that’s the case, the Loyal C.M.S. fans witnessed 15 quick-paced races from the 71 Loyal C.M.S. Contingency Connection drivers on hand. With weather warnings and the threat of rain all around the C.M.S. high banks, the only true threat was the fierce competition going down on the track in all five divisions. Josh Fisher, the young 305 Sprint Car driver is not only the hottest driver at C.M.S. but one of the hottest in the area as he picked up his fifth feature event win in a row! ‘Mountain Man’ Mark Evinger showed piloted a borrowed car to victory lane in the B-modified feature. Gary Hemme, picked up feature victory number four of the year in his Street Stock and Chillicothe driver Lee Hibner won another close finish ‘Mighty’ Modified feature event over Joe Bradshaw.

In the Limited Late Model division, 11 Loyal drivers checked in on the evening. Earlier in the race program’s heat-race action it was James Rutlidge of California, MO, and Kevin ‘the Kid’ Coyne of Kingsville, MO, picking up the wins. As a result of their qualifying-race wins Rutlidge and Coyne who brought the field to flagman Hershel Thompson’s green flag for the feature. Early on, several drivers experienced trouble including California, MO, driver Ed Martin and hard-charging Brett Rollert of Smithville, MO. Rutlidge quickly shot up to the high side and led the first five laps as Jason Estes began his rise to the top. By the completion of lap five Estes reeled in Rutlidge and swept by him for the lead. Rutlidge stayed within a reasonable distance of Estes through lapped traffic and went on to finish in second spot as Estes took the win. Coyne came across the line in third with Walt Imhoff, Danny Barker and Shawn Williams rounding out the top six positions. Estes, from Cameron, Missouri, who was making his first appearance at the C.M.S. highbanks this year, took home the trophy and $500 paycheck to grab his second feature victory of his racing weekend.

The young drivers continued to show the way during 305 Sprint Car racing. Eight Loyal Contingency Connection drivers raced their way to starting positions for the feature event through one heat race. Kansas City, MO, driver Zack Goulden got his night off to a golden start as he picked up the heat win over Doug Rose and Greenwood’s Christi Hoenshell. Goulden brought the sprinters to the line for the main event and immediately set sail from his pole-starting spot to initially go unchallenged for the lead. It was a bad night for both Doug Rose and Rich Suhr as they suffered mechanical DNFs. In what appeared to be a sure-fire victory, Goulden began to make his way through lapped traffic while on lap 11; Josh Fisher made his way into second spot from his fourth starting position. On lap 13, while trying to maneuver the lapped traffic in turn three, Fisher had the quicker reaction and shot down on the low side to take the lead. Goulden gave chase for the final two laps but had to settle for second as Fisher sailed on to his fifth feature win of the year and claim the Contingency Connection bonus award for his victory! Austin Alumbaugh, Kevin Roth and Christi Hoenshell followed the leaders to the line to finish third through fifth.

With 22 Loyal Street Stock drivers on hand, it took three qualifying heat races to sort out the starting field for the feature event. Picking up wins in heat-race action were Sedalia’s Gary Hemme, Odessa’s Donnie Danner and Holden’s Bobby Raybourn. Hemme, piloting his Russ Petree Lawn Service, Xtreme Auto Repair, Sedalia Democrat, North 65 Café, Katy Motors, Pinky’s Auto Salvage, Sedalia Starter & Alternator, Prudential Home Realty, and Wheels & Deals-sponsored street stock, brought the cars to the green flag for the start of the 15-lap feature race. New point’s leader Bobby Raybourn quickly found himself in trouble on the high side between turns two and three and went over the top of the turns to bring out the first caution flag. Raybourn was able to re-start the race on the tail end of the field and eventually recovered to an eighth-place. As Hemme continued leading, Herb Dannar and Tammy Korff quickly moved toward the front of the pack from their fifth and seventh starting spots to hold down the second and third positions. Robin Rufener, Donnie Danner, Thomas Roberts and Marc Carter all exited the race early on while Jay Lyle, Brian Cox and Chad Eickleberry were unable to start the feature race. Caution flew again on lap seven when the car of Brett Cayer received damage after contacting the front-stretch wall; Josh Guy also experienced problems and both drivers exited the race. Once the green flew again Herb Danner was doing all he could to gather in Hemme as Tammy Korff held down a solid third-place run. Despite getting close several times through lapped traffic, Danner came up just shy of victory as Gary Hemme picked up his fourth feature victory of the year. Following Hemme and Dannar to the line to complete the top six were Korff, Jimmy Ngo, Cole Wimmer and Doug Walrath.

Versatility is certainly something everyone strives to have and ‘Mountain Man’ Mark Evinger was the perfect example of true versatility as he hopped in the borrowed B-modified car of John Ake. Evinger, who also runs Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, MO, earlier had re-surfaced the track during the short intermission and gave the C.M.S. racers an excellent racing surface for the feature races. Early on in the main event, Norborne’s Wayne Stevens made heavy contact with the front-stretch wall coming off of turn four; Stevens was shaken up but came out of the car to a huge round of applause from the Loyal C.M.S. fans. Once the field went back to green Evinger resumed leading the race and was never challenged. The ‘Mountain Man’ has piloted about every kind of race-car imaginable and made his way through the field of Loyal B-modified racers to claim victory. New driver Jerimiah Saling of Pole, MO, finished a strong second. Tyler Lewis was third as heat-race winner Chris Akers brought his car home in fourth; point’s leader Tony Nelson finished fifth.

There were 24 Loyal ‘Mighty’ Modified drivers on hand; in the qualifying heat races Joe Bradshaw, Lee Hibner and Kyle Westerhold flew the checkered flags. Despite overcast and ominous clouds there must have been a full moon above as the ‘Mighty’ ones had a rough time getting their main event to go green, let alone off the line to start the race as it took three complete restarts to finally get going. Once the drivers began to sort themselves out and get into race mode, it looked to be another photo finish with Bradshaw and Lee Hibner side by side for several laps at the front of the field. Sisters Randi Olson and Desi Elledge were the first cars to exit the race with mechanical troubles. As Hibner and Bradshaw continued their fierce battle up front, ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer, Kyle Westerhold, Lonnie Hibner and Jake Richards raced their way to the top six. While running third, Meyer spun on lap six to bring out a caution flag and had to re-start tailback due to the spin as Bradshaw now was putting heavy pressure on Lee Hibner for the lead on the re-start. As the battle waged up front, Brian Johnson lost control of his car coming off of turn four, which led to a pile-up on the front straightaway. Clay Langley, Meyer and James Reid were all involved in the melee along with Johnson. Meyer took a vicious hit in the crash; although Meyer was uninjured his car wasn’t as lucky as it suffered extensive damage. All four drivers involved were done for the night and were unable to continue racing. Once the green flew again, Dennis Walrath was the next car to exit with Terry Schultz also having problems, ending both drivers’ racing for the night. On lap 10, Westerhold spun and brought out the caution once again. Westerhold and Lonnie Hibner were both relegated to the back on the re-start as Lonnie’s brother Lee continued to fend off Bradshaw at the front. Another multi-car accident on the re-start led to the cars of Aaron Marrant, Lonnie Hibner and Jim Moody exiting the race. Up front, Lee Hibner used the high side to retain his lead over Bradshaw as now ‘Fast’ Richard Layne found himself in the third spot. At the finish line it was Lee Hibner who brought his Hibner Saw Mill & Logging-sponsored modified across the finish line first to take a thrilling victory over Bradshaw. Layne came from his seventh-starting spot to retain third as Jesse Wheeler made his way to fourth position after starting 11th. Westerhold recovered from his earlier spin to finish fifth while Ed Griggs came all the way from 15th to nail down a sixth-place finish.
