KARRICK-CHARLES-MEYER-THOMPSON THAT QUICK, THAT CLOSE!…. IN CMS' PEPSI/ BUD RACING "$1K MODIFIED SPECIAL #1"!

Wins Also Go to "Immaculate" Hammons, Un-retired Potter and 'Kid' Coyne!

Warrensburg, Missouri

A capacity crowd had to hold onto their seats just to keep from falling out of the grandstands Saturday night as the action in the Pepsi/ Bud Racing "$1K Modifeid Spedcial #1" at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg was almost beyond belief.

The 24 car, 25 lap Farm and Home of Warrensburg/ T-Mobile "Mighty Modifieds" feature event, put on the block with a $6550.00 payoff purse, saw three, first and second row starters 'Movin' Dave Meyer, Tom Charles and Tim Karrick run in a constant three-abreast formation all the way around for a full six, initial laps. Had a yellow not been thrown, there's no telling how that would have turned out.

With five yellow flags in the premier event on a very swift racing surface, it was constant dicing that saw Basehor, Ks' Karrick come out on top, Charles one-third of a car-length in second, another half car length for Meyer for third and fourth for Jason 'trouble' Thompson by just a couple of inches. The crowd was again screaming, wishing they could throw the proverbial 'blanket' over the top four. They could have.

Karrick, whose race car number "1K" was most apropos, was not paid the advertised $1000.00 dollar first place prize. He got $1100 instead, thanks to Concordia's Mike Wilson and his Fatboyz Conoco station's $100 pay-kicker. Charles was still smiling with nine one-hundred dollar bills in his hand, folding away $800 into his billfold was Meyer, Thompson with $700 in-fist wasn't all that unhappy while fifth placer Jimmy Dowell wasn't shedding any tears on his 600 bucks after starting 18th.

It took two 'last chance' 'B' features and six, large 8-lap qualifying heats to sort out the starting 24 cars. Heats went to Movin Dave, Charles, Karrick, Clay Langley, Jr., Ben Woods and Holt's Summit's Curt Rackers. Making the special run by winning their semis were Blue Springs' Steve Watkinson and Jefferson City's Bob Test.

Six-time CMS Mighty Modified and defending champ 'Fast' Richard Layne had early feature troubles when his power-plant sheared the drive coupler's splines.

Being a CMS special, points were not awarded, and Concordia's Alan Deatherage still maintains the points lead.

His race car is immaculate. And so is his driving style. Pleasant Hill's Steve 'immaculate' Hammons pulled down his second, seasonal win in the Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stock, 15 round main event. The crowd went wild with fem-racer Tammy Korff's hard charge to break out in second, Jesse Wheeler was unnoticed until he suddenly showed up in third after taking the green in 20th, fourth was found by Fred King and Chad Eickleberry had his best night in quite a while with fifth.

So far this season, you had to be a Potter or a Chevalier to win an Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint car feature. This time it was back to Potter.. Kenny Potter.. who lassoed his third main event victory so far this season. It was done a full month later than his previous victory. Young rookie Arte Lett was a good bet as he screamed up to take second over Joe Chevalier in third, fourth placer Matt Chevalier and Jimmy Garner in fifth.

Kevin Coyne looked to be overpowered throughout the early portions of the 15 circle, Country Kitchen Limited Late Model main affair, but with five spins to go he passed four cars to take his second feature in a row, his third of the year. He almost didn't get around race long leader Mark 'mountain man' Evinger who was going for his second, seasonal win with style. But high-groove quarters that were too tight for Evinger forced him off the track and over 'the edge' as the top two had to maneuver around a lapped car on the final turn. Buddy Blain went up a spot for his umpteenth second, third was newcomer to CMS Steven Clancy, Garry Billings, Jr. drove forward to fourth while Marc 'the dweeb' Carter had to hold on for fifth.

Bud Beer rep Jenn Moles from Lee's Summit smiled for the cameras while presenting the individual winning chauffeurs their hardware, and the photos later exposed the fact that the drivers were smiling even more.

Next Saturday night's event is carded as the Lee Nevels Memorial/ 61-Country's sixth annual "Limited Late Model Shootout".

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS

In last week's Pit Bits we reported a couple of misnomers concerning the Memorium to the late Limited Late Model champion, Lee Nevels. First, we'd like to clarify that Lee passed away the following evening, on Sunday. And, driving Lee's trusty #44 numbered car during the special track tour before the national anthem the week before was not retired CMS driver Kenny 'tow truck' Holmes, but a relation to the Nevels family, CMS modified shoe Chris Dillon. Holmes is the one who trailered Lee's car to the track. Our apologies for the misinformation. We try to make all details as correct as possible, especially being that tonight is the Lee Nevels Memorial/ 61-Country "Limited Late Model Shootout".

When 'Fast' Richard's car started turning super-high RPM's in the engine compartment but none at the rear wheels, well known car owner Bobby Hunt replied, "We've run that particular drive coupler for over two years. We just flat wore it out". A simple, but exacting synopsis. By the way, Richard's older brother, 'r. Experience' Bobby Layne, put in a great run with a rush from 21st all the way forward to ninth. Now that's experience!

And now that we're talkin 'experience, take the three mod chauffeurs that ran six consecutive laps in a three-way, side-by-side battle, never touching each other even once. It's easy to deduct by reasoning that it took lots of experience from those three, and that they definitely have. Add up all the years each driver has competed, you're getting close to 75 total years. Warning to all racers who only have a couple of years racing experience; "Don't try that at home"!
