THOMPSON IS 'TROUBLE' FOR MODIFIEDS, BILLINGS, JR. LEARNS AND EARNS WITH LEFT HAND TURNS IN "PATRICIA'S I.G.A. RACE NIGHT" AT CENTRAL MISSOURI!

'Let's Go Joe' Repeats Sprint Win, Campbell Still A Standout in Street Stocks!

by Tom Wilson-pma

Warrensburg, Missouri

Always just on the edge of pulling down his first "Mighty Modified" win this season, which placed him at the top of the season points list coming into Saturday night's 'Patricia's I.G.A. Race Night' at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg, Concordia's Jason 'trouble' Thompson finally 'broke the ice' with a victory in the 24 car, 20 lap Farm and Home of Warrensburg/ T-Mobile 'Mighty Modified' main event.

After seeking his early motorsports career experience by running 'straight lines' in his dragster, Kansas City, Ks' Garry Billings, Jr. finally got the knack of turning left, getting sideways on dirt and winding up at the same starting line first with a win in the Country Kitchen Limited Late Models. It was his first ever oval victory.

The 'Flying Chevaliers from Belton' saw the oldest of the two brothers, Joe Chevalier, repeat with an encore win in the Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint cars. It was his third top-position run of the season.

When he's hot, he's hot. 'Cool' Clayton Campbell from Sedalia got by Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stock points leader Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler with seven circuits to go for his fourth, 2003 CMS win.

The racing surface itself was out of it's 'norm'; as happens every time when those infrequent south breezes don't stop blowing as usual when the sun goes down. The ace drivers had to adapt to running just two grooves, instead of the usual three or four, with somewhat drier surface conditions in the features.

It took five, eight lap qualifiers and a 'B' last chance event to sort out the top 24 Mighty Mods for the 20 lap feaure. Heat winners were James McMillin, Robert Kluender, Larry Stevenson, Tim Karrick and 'IGA Man' Alan Deatherage. Grandview's 'Smokin' Joe Walker had to smoke his way to the front to capture the consi.

Highly noticied lately for his driving skills, Larry Stevenson flashed his way to first at the start of the mod main until 'trouble' Thompson, bit by bit, worked his way around and to the helm. Unfortunately, a few laps later, Stevenson's car quit due to a broken throttle linkage. That set race sponsor's favorite Deatherage on his tail, who chased him the entire way as a constant threat to Hershel Thompson's twin checkers. Tim Karrick, who had a 'fall back a bit' situation at the start, had to corral his car's 'on the edge shenanigans' to barely hold third over Tom Charles, who started tenth and drove his famous 'Riverside Stadium', 'entire-circle' route to rush to fourth. Terry Schultz, turning thirty-one years of age on this night, popped into fifth.

A more perfect night it could not have been for the attending Patricia's IGA sponsors of the evening as they realized the first two finishers in the mod main were from their home town of Concordia.

From the front-row-pole, 'Mountain Man' Marl Evinger grabbed the lead and veritable oval-driving rookie Billings fell onto his rear bumper. Evinger used his favorite 'on the edge' groove until a slight slip off the bank let Billings zip by for the lead and resultant win. It wasn't easy from there, however.

Points leader and three time seasonal winner Kevin' Kid' Coyne started hounding Billings lap after lap, at times pulling up beside the former drag racer. Garry never lost his cool, remembered to turn left at the turns and captured his first-ever. Coyne was a solid second, re-affirming his points lead, the drive of the night was turned in by Marc 'the dweeb' Carter from tenth to third, fourth was found by vet stock expert Buddy Blain while John Hollomon came from almost nowhere for a fast closing fifth.

"Cool" Campbell, still quite warm after a victory the night before at LA Racedway in LaMonte, had to try and figure out a way to get around the 20 year old phenom and points leader Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler. Early leader Chad Eickleberry was in full command at the start, but his trusty car 'smoked out'. Wheeler wheeled into the lead until lap 8 of the scheduled 15 circles for the event when Campbell figured it all out. Wheeler tried hard to regain the helm, but had to settle for second. Third through fifth were claimed by 'Street Stock King' John 'the boomer' Brooks, who had bad luck in his heat and had to drive hard from dead last (21st), a well-handling Donald Danner and a swift Wayne Stevens.

It looked as though the sprint car win leader so far, Kenny Potter, would give it a great shot to do it again, but his car faltered early and started moving backwards little by little. The door opened for Joe Chevalier, and he was never seriously challenged for the remainder of the 15 lap, WOFC affair. Young rookie Artie Lett flew to the front for a strong second, 'dad' Dan Chevalier was third, fourth was managed by Kenny Potter with cuz Kelly Potter right behind in fifth.

With 88 cars, 18 events and a 'full-monte', one-week early 'Crazy Browning Brothers' giant fireworks display, also including the standard full-time intermission, it still took only 3 hours and 21 minutes to race from the first green to the final checkers.

Next Saturday night is set for the 2nd 'Big One' event at CMS this year; the seventh annual Farm and Home of Warrensburg/ T- Mobile "Bar-B-Que Bowl"! Like the other CMS 'big one' specials, a 40 lap feature for the "Mighty Modifieds" doles out a heavy $22,000 + total purse with $2,000 to the victor. All four classes will be in contention.

Adult admission for the big, big show is $12, Sr. Citizens-$10, ages six through eleven-$800 and under six, free. Pit passes hold at $20. The race starting times are the same. In case the weather is too bad for Saturday, the same event will be scheduled for the next night (Sunday) with the same times and prices.

BITS FROM THE PITS:

The 'rooster boosters' were a bit surprised when Tom Charles' self-designed machine didn't raise the left front wheel higher than the top of all the rest of his competitors throughout the main as it did the entire time last week. The reason? "I took off the four-bar system from my car; I designed it to take both kinds; and replaced it with the two-bar system. I found that it seems to handle better that way, and I know what the car is going to do next. I think I'll keep it that way for the 'big one' next week". When 'rooster' talks, people listen, 'cause they know what he says is worth hearing.

Six-time CMS champ and three-consecutive time 'big one' winner 'Fast' Richard Layne fell into more bad luck with his Bobby Hunt ride. They replaced the initial engine that was acting up the previous week. The new power-plant let loose during the feature, leaving an oil streak from track to inside the trailer. Older brother 'Mr. Experience' Bobby did offer some good to the night for the Laynes, as he maneuvered from 18th to 7th in the main event.

Speaking of Laynes there's quite a few more that are active in the background every week. John Layne, the oldest of the brother trio, is the true 'Automotive Engineer' of the bunch and the creator and designer of the famous Layne Racing Transmisison, John has two sons, John IV and Dustin Layne. Those two are the runners of the kc-racin.com racing website. Dustin bought a high-quality digital camera last week and shot some super pics of many CMS cars from pitside. They are seeable in all their glory, sharpness, and especially size, at the website address shown just above. They do a nice job for us kc-racin fans. Log-in ifya already haven't. Their own opinions are most interesting too. They... "tell it like it is"..., as quoted from the late sportscaster Howard Cosell. So who's responsible for starting all the Layne activity for so many years in area racin'? Well, none other than Elmer Layne of course, who started sporting racing coupes back in the fifties and went through decades of motorsports competition ending with the super modifieds, and grooming top drivers.
