(Warrensburg) Once again temperatures soared back to the Century Mark as the fans in the stands made their way out to Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) to see the five Contingency Connection racing divisions compete in 18 different races. A total of 78 cars were on hand including 26 ‘Mighty’ Modifieds, 16 Limited Late Models, 19 Street Stocks, 7 Sprints and 10 B-Modifieds. Tom ‘the Rooster’ Charles made a rare appearance at CMS in his modified and picked up an emotional win, ending a nearly two-year old drought in victory lane. Both Brett Rollert in his Limited Late Model and Josh Fisher in his 305 Sprint each picked up their seventh and division-leading feature wins of the year. The ‘Timeless One’ Jay Lyle returned to victory lane in the Street Stocks for the third time this year as Tyler Lewis did the same in his B-Modified.

In preparation for next week’s $1,000-to-win Limited Late Model special feature, a full field of late models were on hand as drivers tried to get their second appearance in at the track so they could avoid paying the extra entry for next week if they hadn’t already competed at CMS at least twice. For the first time this season it took three heat races to sort out the starting grid for the feature event. Kevin Coyne picked up a convincing win as did Brett Rollert. Richard ‘Light Man’ Leigh, a weekly racer at CMS every night this year grabbed a big win in the third heat race driving his new car to victory lane for the first time. As they’ve done many times this year, it was Coyne and Rollert who brought all 16 lates to the green flag for the 15-lap main event. Coyne quickly shot out to the lead as new driver Brandon Dunham made his way around Rollert early on for second. Never one to settle for anything other than first, Rollert quickly moved to the point ahead of Coyne and Dunham by lap three as Coyne went over the embankment in turn two with mechanical problems, relegating him to a 14th-place finish. On the restart, after the caution for Coyne, Rollert began pulling away with now second-running Leigh and Dunham battling for position. Danny Barker had a scary moment on the backstretch as he lost a tire entering turn three ending his night early. Steven Clancy, hot off a win the night before at Valley Speedway left the track with mechanical woes as did Zach Green, Kevin Vandelicht, Virgil Jeffries, Kevin Rogers, Jamie Wineland and unfortunately Leigh. On lap five, Jeremy Watts spun and Walt Imhoff made contact with him relegating the two to the rear of the field on the re-start. A lap 10 re-start turned out to be costly for many competitors as an accordion-style crash eliminated some competitors from the event. At the conclusion of the race it was Rollert visiting victory lane for the seventh time this year in the KC Gutter Tech, Buzzard Racing Engines, National Agents Alliance, Leroy Guthrie Signs and Lettering Graphics and KB Painting GRT Limited Late Model. Dunham had an impressive debut in second, followed by Imhoff and Watts who recovered from their earlier spins for third and fourth and Dwane Vandelicht and Ed Martin in fifth and sixth. Next week’s big-money racing action in this division should bring out another large field of cars and you never know who may pull into CMS for the big money.

Only seven 305 Sprints were on hand and competed in just one heat race that saw Zach Goulden finish ahead of Christi Hoenshell and Chad Tye to take the heat win. Goulden and Hoenshell earned the front-row starting spots for the feature event and took Hershel Thompson’s green flag leading the field into turn one. Late in the evening turn two turned out to be quite tricky for some of the drivers as the track slicked over in that area. Hoenshell powered her way to the front of the field ahead of Josh Fisher in the 15-lap main event. Last week’s feature winner Goulden had trouble from the get go as a spin on lap two relegating himself to the back of the field, then while making his way back to the front mechanical woes brought his night to an end down the front stretch. On lap five, Tom McGarry spun his machine in turn three bringing out another caution flag. On the re-start Hoenshell had the lead over Fisher and Chad Tye. Hoenshell looked to have the field covered in her sprinter until a heart-breaking spin on lap 10 eliminated her chances for a second feature win of the year. For the final five laps, Fisher then assumed control of the race and never looked back as he went on to his seventh feature victory this year in the Fisher’s Concrete, Little Big Horn Cattle Co, R&C Adventures, TCI Tire Center Inc, Smart Growth Industries, Cook’s Fabrication, Charlie’s Taxidermy, Ray’s Custom Butchering, Bell Weld #86 Sprinter. McGarry recovered nicely from his earlier spin for second as Rick Suhr finished third. Hoenshell was able to salvage a fourth-place run ahead of Kevin Roth in fifth.

The Street Stock drivers continued their impressive racing action that they’ve given the fans every week this year with three hotly contested heat races leading up to the feature event. With the top seven in points separated by less than 100 points heading into the night’s competition, the leaders each had their own unique experiences during the racing action. Heat races were won by Brian Johnson, Marc Carter and Tammy Korff. It was these three who grabbed the top three starting spots for the 15-lap feature event. The race quickly went under a caution flag as Chad Eickleberry, point’s leader Jimmy Ngo and Johnny Ebert were involved in on-track incidents relegating them to the tail of the field on the re-start. Meanwhile, up front Carter led the field ahead of Jay Lyle, a fast-moving James McMillin and Korff. On lap three, Lyle found his way around Carter to grab the lead but as quickly as Lyle got to the front McMillin shot up to the high side and took the lead leaving Carter and Lyle to battle for second. A lap eight spin by John Miller brought out the caution flag bunching up the field for a re-start. While the cars made their way around the track to resume the race, McMillin’s apparent run to victory was cut short when he had to leave the track while leading with mechanical problems. His exit left Lyle and Carter to battle for the lead with Korff and now Bobby Raybourn in the top four. The field had trouble getting re-started as the cars of Dale Atkinson and John Ebert, who was involved in his second yellow-flag incident both left the track. Lyle continued to lead up front with Carter not far behind while meanwhile the car of Tammy Korff was spun around in turn three and a small fire had to be extinguished on her car as the officials had her exit the car. The fire did not cause too much damage and Korff was able to re-start the race at the tail end of the field and went on to an eighth-place finish. At this time, Nathan Himes had to exit with damage on his car and Bobby Raybourn received a black flag and also had to leave the event. Once all the excitement of the midway point of the race settled back into racing action, the ‘Timeless One’ Jay Lyle sailed on to victory in his L&H Appliances, Showcase Video, Buzzanga’s Amoco, Ace Car Wash, the Fan Club, Heartland Farm & Lawn, Heating & Cooling Specialists, Fast Lane Engines and Jay’s Engine Tech sponsored #j66. Carter finished in second ahead a strong running Brett Nail in third, Herb Dannar with an impressive run to fourth, Eickleberry with a nice recovery to fifth and pole sitter Brian Johnson in sixth. Point’s leader Ngo also recovered nicely to finish seventh and maintain his slim lead in the point’s championship chase.

The B-modifieds again had enough cars on hand to compete in at least two heat races, which were won by Tyler Lewis and point’s leader Tony Nelson, winning his first race of the year. Columbia’s Tyler Lewis, who had missed the previous week while he attended the Busch Grand National race at Gateway International in Madison, Illinois, started up front with Nelson along side for the 12-lap main event. On lap two, the car of Tim Perrigo spun in the tricky turn two area and the caution flag was brought out to realign the field. Lewis led now second-running Mark Evinger and Nelson back to the green flag until lap three when Perrigo once again spun coming off of turn four down the front stretch as Nelson also spun. It was Perrigo’s second yellow flag incident so he had to leave the race and Nelson went to the back on the re-start. Again on the re-start Lewis continued leading Evinger as the two ran side-by-side for a few more laps until Lewis moved to the point leaving Evinger in second just ahead of Chris Akers and Greg Marrant. New driver Kevin Key of Columbia left the field with mechanical woes on lap five as Lewis continued leading. In the end, Lewis was able to claim his third feature of the year in the T & K Roofing, Spice Wine Ironworks, Lynch Farms, Chuck’s Auto Body, Calvert’s Day Care and Jimmy’s Steakhouse sponsored #4L ahead of Evinger in second. Last week’s feature winner Chris Akers finished third ahead of Nelson who salvaged a fourth-place run ahead of Bob Dumit in fifth and Wayne Stevens in sixth.

We’ve all heard at one time or another about how a track’s water truck can effect the outcome of a night of racing action but in this case it was actually another track’s water truck problems that led to a surprise winner in the CMS ‘Mighty’ Modified division. With 26 outstanding drivers on hand to compete in four qualifying heat races the action was fast and furious on the smooth-racing surface. Concordia’s ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer, the ‘Clinton Missile,’ Dennis Walrath, Bonner Springs, Kansas’ Tom ‘the Rooster’ Charles and Ashland’s Virgil Jeffries all drove to heat-race victories earning the first four starting positions for the 20-lap main event. As the field was trying to come to green to get the race underway the car of Jimmy Dowell stalled on the front stretch and was unable to continue the event and the field was realigned for a complete re-start. Walrath quickly shot to the lead down on the low side with Charles, Donnie Dannar and Jeffries just behind. Meyer’s car did not appear to be up to speed as he slipped back to sixth just behind Dean Wille. On lap seven, Joe Bradshaw and Aaron Marrant, who was in a backup car got together down the front stretch to bring out another caution flag just as Paul Knight left the race. Both Bradshaw and Marrant were able to re-start but Marrant left the track just after the field went back to green-flag racing. Denny Albertson and Chad Staus were also involved in a separate incident and left the track, done for the night. On the re-start Virgil Jeffries made his way into the third spot ahead of Donnie Dannar who was having his best run of the year. Meanwhile ‘Chargin’ Charlie Ebert made his way to fifth just ahead of Wille, ‘Fast’ Richard Layne and Kyle Westerhold. Meyer continued to slip back through the field after a little contact with the front-stretch wall. By lap 16 Walrath stretched out his lead over Charles, as Dannar was able to re-take third while Jeffries drifted high and lost several positions in the running order and went back to seventh. On lap 18, the Jeffries car made contact with Layne, sending Layne into a spin leading to a caution flag. David Angell had troubles at this time as well and left the race as did Layne who was unable to finish the event. On the re-start, coming off of turn four Walrath experienced an apparent mechanical failure while leading and slammed into the front-stretch wall leading to a chain-reaction crash with drivers doing all they could to avoid the leader as his car came to a halt in turn one. After both Bradshaw and Marrant experienced earlier troubles it looked as though point’s leader Walrath would distance himself from the pair in the point’s championship chase, but with his DNF the standings will still be close between the three heading into next week’s action. Both Jeffries and Terry Schultz received damage in the Walrath incident and were unable to continue. This left ‘the Rooster’ Charles to inherit the lead ahead of a strong-running Dannar in second, Ebert in third, Dean Wille in fourth and Kyle Westerhold in fifth for a green, white, checkered flag finish. Dannar gave it all he had to try and get a run on Charles, but in the end the veteran Charles was able to end his nearly two year-old feature win dry spell as he grabbed a popular victory in the Tiner Construction, Mac’s Fence Inc, AER Race Wheels, Comp-u-Sew Custom Embroidery, JR Motorsports and S&L Graphics sponsored #81. Dannar had his strongest run of the year in second as did Ebert who raced his way to an impressive third-place run ahead of Wille who finished in fourth just ahead of 12th-starting Kyle Westerhold in fifth and 14th-starting Kevin Sloan in sixth.

You will definitely want to join us next week as the ever-popular Kids’ Night at the races will be on tap. All kids 12 and under will compete in foot races on the front straightway of the speedway at intermission time. In addition, all kids 12 and under will receive a ‘goodie bag’ filled with various racing-related items and assorted school supplies. Also on tap will be the $1,000-to-Win Limited Late Model special feature event. We’ll see if anyone can challenge the dominating Brett Rollert in this division. With this sort of money and payout on the line, you never know who may come in and try to spoil Rollert’s dominance. Next week’s action in the Contingency Connection racing divisions gets underway at 5; Hot Laps start at 7 and the first green flag races go off the line at 7:30. CMS is located just off of 13 Hwy four miles north of Warrensburg from 50 Hwy or 14 miles south of I-70 from the Higginsville exit on 13 Hwy. CMS racing results and stats are provided by track statistician Glyda Jaeger and are posted on the track’s Website at www.centralmissourispeedway.net.
