(Warrensburg) The final ‘big one’ of the year in the ‘Mighty’ Modifieds was a lucrative one for Sedalia, Missouri’s Terry Schultz as he raced his way to the biggest victory of his career during the $2,000-to-win 40-lap feature event. Smithville driver Brett Rollert joined a very short list of drivers in any division at CMS to win at least 10 feature races in a single season and also wrapped up the 2006 Limited Late Model points championship. James McMillin of Warrensburg made it two wins in a row in the Street Stock division and young driver Tyler Lewis of Columbia raced his way to victory lane for the fourth time this year in a wild, crash-marred B-Modified feature. A total of 85 drivers in four divisions registered for the night’s competition on Country 94.1 KFKF Radio Race Night.

Webster’s may have to put a new picture in their dictionary next to the word domination; that picture would be none other than the 2006 Points Champion in the Limited Late Model division, Brett Rollert. After an earlier evening heat race victory, Rollert started up front in the 15-lap feature event alongside fellow heat race winner Kevin Coyne as the two set sail into turn one with the rest of the field in tow. Rollert and Coyne were clearly the cars to watch in this one as the two battled down the straights and in the turns side by side for many laps with Rollert on the high side and Coyne down low. Only two cautions fell during the race, with Coyne trying to take the lead on each re-start only to have Rollert pick up the high-side cushion and maintain his lead. As the checkered flags waved at the finish, Rollert won his 10th feature race of the season over Coyne, and Shawn Williams and Allen Perryman.

The Street Stock point’s battle has been the most fiercely contested championship battle this year on the CMS high banks with Jimmy Ngo of Independence leading the points heading into the night’s competition. Tammy Korff, James McMillin and Chad Eickleberry all picked up heat race wins early in the evening and it was point’s title contender Korff and McMillin who brought the 22-car starting field to Hershel Thompson’s green flag for the 15-lap feature event. Championship contenders were spread out all over in the line-up with leader Ngo starting in 14th, John Ebert 7th, Marc Carter 6th and Korff on the poll. From the get go McMillin showed he was going to be a force to be reckoned with yet again as he rode the high line and grabbed the point from Korff who slipped all the way pack to 6th by lap two. An early caution fell on lap two and re-bunched the field as Brian Johnson moved into the second spot. Johnson has had several strong runs lately and continued doing so in this race as he searched high and low for a way around McMillin. Carter and Jay Lyle also found their way to the front of the field midway through the race to make it a four-man battle up front. During a late race caution, Carter’s night came to an end as he headed for the pits with mechanical troubles. That left McMillin, Johnson and Lyle to battle it out for the lead, and battle they did for the remaining circuits with Johnson actually grabbing the lead at one point only to be relegated back to second after another late-race caution flew, realigning the field for the restart. On the ensuing restart, McMillin barely clung onto his lead and just edged out Johnson at the finish line for his second feature win of the year. Jay Lyle finished third with Chad Eickleberry, Wayne Harper and Korff rounding out the top six, one spot ahead of point’s leader Jimmy Ngo in seventh. Next week will be an exciting night for the street stocks as Ngo tries to hang on to capture his first CMS point’s title.

The still growing B-Modifieds had their largest field on hand so far this year as 15 drivers signed in to compete during two heat races, which were won by Chris Akers and Jeff Meeker to determine the starting lineup for the feature race. With many drivers still gaining experience in their new B-Mods several drivers experienced mechanical woes and crashes, which relegated them to the pits during this wild event. Akers and Meeker started up front at the start of the feature race as Akers grabbed the point over Meeker early on to lead the race. Several restarts later, Akers still held onto the lead but began to slip into the clutches of Meeker who eventually grabbed the lead. A multi-car incident off turn four early in the race re-bunched the field as 5 cars had to leave with various problems as a result of the melee before the green flag fell once again with Meeker out front. By this time, Tyler Lewis of Columbia had made his way into the top four from his 8th starting spot. Meeker continued leading Akers and Tyler’s father, Gary Lewis in the top three. Late in the race, and with only two and a half minutes left on the clock, Akers spun while battling with a charging Tyler Lewis and had to restart on the tail end of the field. On the re-start Tyler Lewis got a run on Meeker off of turn four and was able to grab the preferred low line and shot to the lead with Meeker settling back into second spot. Akers once again spun while trying to fight his way back to the front and was done for the night after having been involved in his second yellow-flag incident. Upon the green, white, checkered flag finish, Lewis held on to the lead and crossed the checkered/yellow flags ahead of Meeker, Gary Lewis, Bob Dumit and the 2006 B-Modified Track Champion, Tony Nelson in fifth.

As the evening’s races neared the end, the big 40-lap, $2,000-to-win feature event for the ‘Mighty’ Modified division rolled onto the speedway to cap off the evening’s racing action. With 34 of the finest competitors on hand, it took five heat races and one b-feature event to sort out the 24-car starting field as the top four finishers from each of these events went on to take the green flag for the big race. Donnie Dannar, Dave Meyer, Terry Schultz, Aaron Marrant and Dustin Boney were all victorious in their respective heat races and earned the first five starting positions for the feature race. Dave Meyer, hungry for a feature victory in the modifieds, quickly shot to the front from the start of the race taking advantage of his outside row one pole position over Donnie Dannar in second. Richard Layne’s night came to an early end as a puff of smoke bellowed from his car on lap one relegating him to a 24th-place finish. Meyer led the first five laps until the caution flag flew for young driver Joey Lile and Terry Kirk just as the field was trying to complete lap six. On the re-start, Aaron Marrant worked his way around Meyer to grab the lead with Dannar holding onto third and Schultz fourth. Marrant led for one full lap until his night ended with mechanical woes off of turn four bringing out the caution once again. This put Meyer back out front on the re-start ahead of Dannar, Schultz and now Boney in the top four. By lap 9, what seemed to be a bad-luck night for the leader of this race now saw Meyer go up in smoke down the front stretch just as Schultz was trying to grab the lead away from him. Another caution flag flew and on the re-start Schultz was the new leader with Boney all over him in second position and Dannar in third. The battle up front wasn’t the only one going on as back in fifth spot James McMillin, Sonny Wood, Dennis Walrath and Joe Bradshaw all swapped positions lap after lap until eventually McMillin and Bradshaw made their way towards the front. Schultz continued stretching out his lead over Boney and Dannar deep into the race until Boney’s night also came to an end with mechanical failure on lap 37 as the caution flag flew one final time. Once the field was realigned, Schultz held the point over Dannar, Staus, Bradshaw, McMillin and Jason Thompson for the final three laps. McMillin and Thompson both transferred into the 40-lapper through the b-feature event and started 22nd and 21st respectively, using patience and smart driving to make their way to the front of the field. McMillin had earlier stated in victory lane after winning the Street Stock feature that patience would play a big role in determining the finish of this race and he was right as he eventually grabbed a top-five finish. Earlier in the year, Schultz grabbed a big-money win in the Street Stock division, a class that he competed in before moving on to the modifieds. On this night, Schultz picked up the big-money win in his modified to add to his impressive CMS resume as he crossed the line ahead of Dannar, Staus, Bradshaw, McMillin and Thompson rounding out the top six finishers.
