Challenge Series Rules

Just want to clairfy something that I have been hearing around the local tracks. Apparently there is a driver (not going to mention names) who thinks that if a feature winner won more than one event, then the second place car from that track will represent the track on the Championship Race Night. However the way I read the rule (I tired to bold, not sure if it worked) that that is not the case. The person highest in Series points without a win would take the remaining positions to claim the 20 car field, then the last four will get a chance to qualify on the night of the Championship Race.

Can anyone tell me if the rules have been changed and not updated on the UMP website? Thanks-Danny

U.M.P. Challenge Series

2003 Schedule!

U.M.P. Challenge of Champions Point Standings

U.M.P. wishes to announce the scheduling and format of a new, exciting and unique Late Model racing series for 2003.

It is a series of twenty (20) races at leading U.M.P. Midwestern tracks. The winner of each of these twenty (20) races has a guaranteed starting spot in "The Challenge of Champions Race", at I-55 Raceway on September 27th.. The "Challenge of Champions Race" will pay $15,000 to win, $500 to start, with a total purse of over $40,000.

Seventeen of the "Challenge of Champions" Series races will pay $2,000 to win, $200 to start. Two of the "Challenge of Champions" races will pay $5,000 to win, $300 to start. One of the "Challenge of Champions" will pay $6,000 to win, $300 to start.

The Challenge of Champions Series events will use the same format as the Summer Nationals. The top 6 qualifiers will go to a DASH along with the U.M.P. National Champion, Challenge of Champions point leader and track champion. The top 6 qualifiers will draw to see how they start the dash and will make up the first three rows. The three provisionals will be added in the seventh, eighth and ninth starting position with the National Champion in 7th, Challenge of Champions point leader 8th and track champion 9th. If the track did not have a 2002 UMP Late Model Champion, the next car in Challenge of Champion Series point standings will get the spot. The top 6 dash finishers go straight up into the feature. Seventh, eighth and ninth place finishers start on the pole of the first three heat races.

Twenty(20) Champions will be locked into the big Challenge of Champions Championship race, representing the track where they won a series race. In case of dual winners, the highest non-winner in series points will fill out the twenty (20) car field. Four(4) additional cars will race their way into the Championship Feature in one(1) or two(2) qualifying races that day for a total field of twenty-four(24).

A new and unique idea for 2003. Not just racing for a purse, but also battling for a guaranteed spot in a prestigious big money U.M.P. race.

As far as I know, you are correct. There have only been 11 different winners in the 16 events held thus far. According to the way the UMP website is worded (and has been all season), this means that, at this point, the 5 highest finishers in season-long Challenge of Champions points who have not won a race will receive a guaranteed starting spot in the big race. According to the website, the finish of any individual qualifying race means nothing, other than to the winner. Jimmy D., I am interpreting this correctly, am I not. Keep up the good work!

P.S. If this were not the case, what would be the incentive for any driver to follow this series and earn series points. To me, it seems only common sense to reward drivers who have followed the tour all season long and attended most, if not all, Challenge of Champions series events.

It looks clear to me too...

It seems as if some driver(s) have gotten some bad information about the rules for this series because its pretty clear, and has been all year, that the top drivers in SERIES POINTS will get those extra spots created by multiple winners. That is, unless they just changed the rules or something, which I doubt. Someone needs to get the correct word to the driver(s) who are misunderstanding how this series works.

Also, the current remaining schedule should read...

8-24 Fayette
8-27 Mount Vernon
8-31 Tri-State
9-19 Kankakee

:)

A few questions about the final night at I55. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated. Are they qualifying, pill draw, or running heats for starting spots in the feature? And how many laps is the feature?

Thanks!!
