Entry Count Soars to 293

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (January 6, 2009) – One more week. That's all that remains before the 23rd Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals presented by General Tire gets under way at the QuikTrip Center's Tulsa Expo Raceway.

Following next Monday's practice session, five full nights of racing ensue on Tuesday through Saturday, January 13-17, as drivers from the nation converge upon the Tulsa State Fairgrounds in pursuit of the coveted Golden Driller trophy.

And the entry count has climbed into uncharted territory, reaching the 293 mark and putting last year's record competitor count of 274 in serious jeopardy of going by the wayside.

The number of states represented, in addition to the Canadian province of Ontario, has climbed to 30 with the addition of Louisiana's Channing Zierolf, who fills the fifth and final Loyet Motorsports mount. With the likes of Danny Lasoski, Jon Stanbrough, Jesse Hockett and Brad Loyet in the other No. 05 Midgets, the Loyet team rivals other super-teams with only the Keith Kunz Motorsports team fielding more entries with six.

Among the latest developments, Sprint Car shoe Terry McCarl has been assigned to the No. 11T Wilke-Pak Motorsports entry, filling out a power team that includes USAC Triple Crown winners Dave Darland and Jerry Coons, Jr., along with 2006 Chili Bowl champion Tim McCreadie.

McCarl will join a stout Tuesday night Qualifying card that includes the likes of Danny Lasoski, Brad Kuhn, Kevin Swindell, Davey Ray, Paul McMahan, Badger Midget champion Mike Hess and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., among others.

The Chili Bowl Race of Champions will also be featured during the Tuesday night qualifying card, which is the only night for which tickets remain.

Sixty-seven of the entered drivers have started at least one Chili Bowl championship main event in the past, while today's entry list addition of Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car shoe Nick Smith brings the number of Rookie contenders to 67.

Following Tuesday night's qualifying action, qualifying night competition follows on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with a full card of championship events to culminate with the Saturday night, January 17, 50-lap Chili Bowl championship feature event.
