MADISON, Ill. –Forecasts that call for high temperatures just above the freezing mark for the weekend have prompted Gateway International Raceway officials to cancel plans for a final weekend of drag racing activity this Saturday and Sunday.

An all-day Test and Tune was planned for Saturday and a no-points bracket event for Super Pro, Pro and Street class cars was on tap for Sunday. However, forecasts calling for temperatures to hover around the 40-degree mark for much of the weekend have led to the cancellation.

Therefore, the final event of the 2002 season at Gateway will be a scheduled Test and Tune night Wednesday (Oct. 29). Gates open at 4 p.m., and runs start at 6 with admission $15 per car.

"To have any kind of quality drag racing show, you have to have track temperatures at least 48-50 degrees, and we'll be below that all weekend according to forecasts," Gateway Director of Operations Mike Myslinski said. "We have decided to make this decision early in the week to allow those looking for some racing activity this weekend to make other plans."

The final schedule for the 2003 special events and the Gateway E.T. bracket series on the drag strip should be finalized by Dec. 1.
