CLARKSVILLE, TN – Jeff Smith of Villanow, GA and Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN earned the front row starting spots on Monday night for the $7,500-to-win Freedom 75 for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series on Tuesday night at Clarksville StormPay.com Speedway.
Smith earned the pole position by winning the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash for heat race winners driving the Allsouth Performance Parts Warrior. Smith won the third 12-lap heat race and led wire-to-wire after starting on the outside of row one in the dash.
Johnson, who won the second 12-lap heat race, finished second in the dash, and will start his Miller Brothers Coal Warrior on the outside of the front row for the 75-lap main event. A pair of Clarksville StormPay.com Speedway StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series regulars will make up the second row.
Steven Ashby of Cunningham, TN won the fourth 12-lap heat race, and finished third in the dash to earn the inside second row spot in The Wheel Shop Stinger. Tony Albright of Clarksville, TN won the first 12-lap heat race, finished fourth in the dash, and will line up his Albright Racing GRT on the outside of the second row,
The top four finishers in each of the four 12-lap heat races on Monday night transferred to the feature race on Tuesday night.
Following Albright in the first heat were fast qualifier and the current StormPay.com DLMS National point leader Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN, Zach Nichols of Cedartown GA in the B&B Specialized Hauling GRT, and top StormPay.com DLMS Rookie Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA in the Old 29 Golf Carts Barry Wright.
Buckingham in the S&S Millwright Barry Wright was the quick timer among the 34 entrants with a time during qualifications around the ¼-mile clay oval in 13.278 seconds for an average speed of 67.781 miles per hour. Buckingham earned $500 for the lap from Hog Chain, MS Mayor Lacy Harralson and Swinging Bridge Raceway in Jackson, MS.
Trailing Johnson in the second heat and earning a seat in the big show were David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN in the Dixon Plumbing Mastersbilt, Carnell Parker III of Clarksville, TN in the Parker Racing Mastersbilt, and Terry Lumley of Twin City, GA in the Kar House Racing Radiators Mastersbilt.
Joining Smith out of the third heat and into the main event were second through fourth-place finishers Jeff Purvis of Clarksville, TN in the StormPay.com/NeSmith Chevrolet Warrior, Danny Jolly of Christopher, IL in the Walters 24-Hour Towing Rayburn, and James Young of Richland, MS in the Swinging Bridge Raceway GRT.
Taking the second through fourth positions behind Ashby in the four heat were Don Young of Hopkinsville, KY in the Don Young Custom Hauling Rocket, Gil Smith of Nashville, TN in the Full Throttle Warrior, and Rick Hixson of Soddy Daisy, TN in the Austin Trucking Mastersbilt.
Drivers that finished fifth on back in the four heat races will be back on Tuesday night for another try at making the feature race by transferring out of one of two 15-lap B-Main races.
