HANFORD, CA (March 31) - Clay Daly of Watsonville, California backed up his 2011 West Coast Shootout Late Model Championship and Gary Jacob Western States Championship with a victory Saturday night at Kings Speedway in Hanford, California. The event featured the West Coast Shootout honoring motorsports journalist Gary Jacob.

Gary Jacob was a well-known journalist from Turlock that passed away in June of 2006. Jacob covered every form of motorsports, dirt or asphalt, giving as many drivers as he could publicity. Racking up nearly 60,000 miles a year, Jacob did it for the love of racing. He became the voice of the West Coast, a voice that has not been filled or heard.

Cars weren’t unloaded until nearly 6:00 PM with threatening weather all around the area and moisture coming from the sky for a short while at the 3/8 mile clay oval. Promoter Scott Woodhouse never gave up hope however with cars taking the track for wheel packing just after 6:00 PM.

Setting fast time of the night at 16.152 and finishing second in his heat race, Clay Daly started the feature event from fifth place and used lapped traffic to his advantage to get the front.

“Starting fifth we knew it was going to be tough with drivers like Bobby Hogge, Jason Papich and Steve Drake,” stated the twenty-two year old. “We got lucky with lapped traffic and were able to get around all of them. This race is for Gary Jacob.”

Steve Drake and Jason Papich set the pace for the thirty-lap feature event. When the green flag dropped Papich quickly took control and began to put a cushion between him and the rest of the field. Salinas’ AJ Kirkpatrick sat in second place before bobbling in turn one and two allowing Bobby Hogge and Drake by.

Papich controlled the race until reaching lapped traffic on lap eight when Hogge was able to get underneath him exiting turn four. Papich fell back to third place and would quickly get pushed back to fourth with Daly charging forward. By lap ten Daly made the pass by Drake and on lap seventeen used lapped traffic to his advantage taking the lead from Hogge. Five laps later Hogge brought out a caution coming to a stop in turn four with his night coming to an end.

The final eight laps were completed with moisture beginning to fall. After drivers deemed the surface was still safe racing resumed. Daly led Drake and Papich the final eight laps and went unchallenged for his first feature event victory of the season.

“Passing Bobby Hogge and Steve Drake is awesome,” stated Daly. “Last time we ran here we ran second to Bobby. He beat us by ¾ of a track.”

Richard Papenhausen, Jeff Decker, Billy Workman Jr., Tony Toste, Larry Childress, Devin Crockett and Bobby Hogge completed the top ten.

The West Coast Shootout Late Model series has a two month break before returning to action at Chris Kearn’s Santa Maria Speedway Memorial Day weekend, May 26th and 27th, for The Nationals. The event will pay $5,000 to win. For more information visit them on the web at www.WestCoastLateModels.com.
