(Warrensburg) The weather almost cooperated in central Missouri this weekend, but it did produce a great track for the hot dirt racing action at Central Missouri Speedway during the O’Dell Tractor race night opener. 85 drivers turned out for the CMS season opener honoring the 2005 Points Champions with trophy presentations at intermission.

Dennis Walrath started the season off on the right foot by winning the first Mighty Modified feature of the year. Another fan favorite finish of the night included Owen Evinger with his first-ever Limited Late Model feature victory ever. 2005 Points Champion Michael Brown topped off a victory and showed he will be a force this year in the 305 Sprint class. In the Street Stock division, we had another great hard charging effort from Gary Hemme when he drove to the checkers with the victory. In the first B-Modified feature of the year, Wayne Stevens, Norborne won with his first victory in the new class at CMS.

The Street Stock race started with Jay Lyle in the lead battling with Gary Hemme and Wayne Harper. Hemme passed him several times, but yellow flags did not allow the pass to be completed. Several other cautions slowed down the pace later on, but Hemme passed Lyle on the low side and held on to the win. Lyle and Harper made it interesting during the race with some attempts to pass each other after yellow flags. Bobby Rayborne also ran well up front with Jimmy Ngo close behind.

The Limited late Model race proved to be an exciting feature for the race crowd as they stood on their feet for Owen Evinger with his first Late Model feature win at CMS. Thirteen late model drivers put on a good show with Evinger displaying his tough driving skills as he led the race from the green flag until the checkers. A scary wreck in turn one started after lap one causing Danny Barker to withdraw after his car was torn apart when it flipped over. Barker was ok after they pulled him out of the turned over car. Allen Perryman battled most of the race with Danny Monroe for second place and Monroe settled into a third place finish after Dave Meyer left the track with his Late Model car at CMS for the first time.

The Mighty Modifieds started with Dennis Walrath at the front of the pack along with Virgil Jeffery. Walrath had the first lap lead but Jeffrey tried to work high around him with Aaron Marrant close behind before both dropping out of the race. Walrath didn’t take long to establish and maintain his lead by the driving a steady line on the tacky surface and stayed out front for the rest of the night. Jim Moody also showed a steady drive with an impressive second place finish.

In fact it was a survival race after many drivers left the track with various problems on a wet and cool evening. Justin Boney coming out of the B-Main worked his way up from back in the pack while picking off cars each lap driving his way up to third place. Boney later had to leave the track with mechanical problems to finish sixteenth. Gary Blackburn also moved up from the fourth row for an impressive third place finish along with Chad Lyle. Lyle survived the race to finish with a strong fourth place finish. Another impressive run was from long time CMS favorite Jimmie Dowell starting in tenth place to finish fifth overall.
