Cockrum Takes Fastrak Midwest/Dirt Late Model Magazine “Night at the Races!” Feature Win at Belle-Clair Speedway

(EDWARDSVILLE, IL) In an incredible last gasp finish Shane Cockrum beat 20 of the best Fastrak Dirt Late Model racers in the Midwest to take the win at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, IL on opening night of the St. Clair County Fair. With the checkered flag flying on the front straight, leaders Rylan Dagg and Joe Morris tangled coming out of turn four sending both around backwards on the front straight short of the finish leaving Cockrum to squirt past on the outside for the victory.
“This was great,” a jubilant Cockrum said after the win. “When I saw them get tangled up, I just shot to the outside and stood on it. Then they said something about one more lap when I was at the scales, and I was like ‘I can’t do another lap!’ I’m really happy to have come here tonight. This was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to this weekend at Malden and Poplar Bluff.”
Cockrum bested a field that included not only Joe Morris, the 2005 Midwest Region Champion, but Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame racer Ed Dixon driving a car borrowed from Montgomery County Speedway regular Eric Rudd. Dixon had a night that started with a last place finish in his heat race after being found five pounds light at the scales, but finished with a solid win in the B Main and a storming run from 16th to third in the feature. Dixon used up all the track and some of the walls in his race to the front, putting on a one man show and proving yet again why he is such a legend behind the wheel.
Nick Lyons ran a steady and conservative race to bring it home in second, an outstanding finish from the quiet man of Dirt Late Model racing. 2005 Midwest Region runner-up Scott Hutchinson took fourth and Josh Carroll claimed fifth.
The Fastrak Midwest Region Touring Series Late Models move to Malden Speedway in Malden, MO and Poplar Bluff Speedway in Poplar Bluff, MO this coming weekend, Aug 11 and 12 for the next two events in the Fastrak Midwest/Dirt Late Model Magazine “Night at the Races!” series of events.
