computer problems??????

We were discussing this in the chat room. My computer has been really slow lately. I have DSL so i dont understand it. ALso, it keeps locking up. Well, a lot of other people are having the same problems. Would it have anything to do with all the pop ups or the new web site taking more power? I dunno. Do we all have a virus? If anyone else is having problems let me know. I would apprecaite an answer. Thanks.

??

i had the same problems, but not with the new website, i had to download spyware because i had to many ads poping up and it was loading my cookies up!

do you have any type of antivirus software? if so you might want to run a scan on your puter. there's a nasty new virus, SASSER, that's been going around since the weekend. It's a shame, I work with computers all day, but I can't really tell you what this latest virus does. Haven't been keeping up with it very well.

I just did some reading about it and it doesn't sound like that's what you have but I would run a scan anyway.

Depending on what OS you have it sounds more like hardware issues. like a harddrive is getting full or highly fragmented. Try running a defrag analysis and see how much it says your drives are fragmented and defrag if necessary.

slowness can be caused by lots of different things, a few things to do/check are...

clear your internet cookies, including offline content.
defrag your computer
look at task manager to check your cpu utilization/MEM usage. If your utilization is high click on the tab just to the left "Processes". Typically most applications are under 10k, any that are above you might want to find out what it is.

Typically java applications run a bit higher.
This site is running appx 27k of MEM usage on my computer... high but not enough to cause system lag.

Im not a web designer, but all of the pretty colors and animations come at a cost usually.... slower page loading.

Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents.

I HAVE HAD MAJOR PROBLEMS FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS NOW. NOT WITH THIS SITE, BUT WITH THE WHOLE SHOOTING MATCH. I'VE TRIED SOMETHING LIKE SPONGEBUBB MENTIONED AND STILL NOT BACK TO NORMAL. I AM GOING TO HAVE TO HAVE SOMEBODY COME FIXER UP FOR ME. I DID HAVE A VIRUS!!!

Go to download.com do a search for Adaware. Download Ad-Aware version 6.0. It is FREE and small. After you install it make sure you check for reference file updates (within the program).
Run this and it will find a s***load of stuff. Most of the time you could delete it all. If you delete something you need it has a replace feature.

clean your registry from all kinds of stuff and defrag your ram memory ,alond with adaware ,endit all2 is also good to use ,ain't that right dog also there are more thanone browser to use also ,all from download .com proud sponsor of trashdog motorsports

End it all is not a good choice if your going surfing. It shuts down your antivirus software too.

I run Adaware 6, and Spybot S&D to clean out all the spyware junk.

Sasser. Hmmm. Well, first thing is ensure you have your firewall enabled. Then go to Microsoft dot com and scan for IE updates, download and install any that you need. Then reboot. Voila` your now protected against the Sasser virus. The Sasser seems to me to be a test run for something bigger, it never actually did much, but you got it by just being on the net. No email, no downloading, just surf the net and you would get it. Seems kinda strange to me, more like somebody was testing delivery without any payload.

I agree, sounds more like a hardware issue, defrag, get some more RAM, or just dump the dinosaur computer you have and buy a hotrod.

End it all can be told not to close down certain processes such as Norton or McAffee. If it continually runs slow after you've cleared you internet casche, cookies, and ran End it all (would be a good test tool either way) then you should probably have someone look at it. Doesn't hurt windows to have a good formatting once or twice a year either. You can leave a Linux box running for 2 years, but a Windows OS can't run properly for that amount of time if its rebooted regularly.

Ok, but I was assuming that most people dont have the level of knowledge and expertise to be able to look at their processes list and know what they were looking at. Most would just go to "close all" and think wow, my computer works fine now, with no knowledge of the risk.

As far as reinstalling windows a couple times a year, I dont get that at all. I run XP, shut down and reboot regularly, and have never had to reinstall. Staying on top of the other maintenance stuff, like running Norton's Disk Dr, Speed Disk, etc, eliminates the need to reinstall Windows. At least it does for me, and I can only speak from my own experience.

You know, my sister thinks you just turn it on and it works too. Needless to say, I do a fair amount of maintenance for her to keep her system running. With 3 teenage daughters and a high speed internet connection, just about anything and everything that can happen does.. :D

End It All 2 Can Shut Down Your Antivirus If You Want It To Been Using It For Years On This Dino 7oomhs Creation And Runs Great ,you Have To Be Persistand Onthe Mantenince, the Dog Taught Me Well

Hey Jimmy, up until about 3 weeks ago, I was having the same problem. I installed lavasoft ad-adware 6.0 personal to scan my computer than I installed sygate 5.5 personal. It took about 2 weeks(and a lot of help) but my computer is running better than ever. Go to http://www.lavasoft.com to install ad-aware 6.0 and then go to http://sygate.com to install the 5.5 firewall. I'm not very computer smart but these programs are pretty easy to use and their free. Note: If you install lavasoft ad-aware 6.0 please go to http://www.lavasoftsupport.com before doing your first scan. The experts there are very good and they will guide you. It's possible that you've been hi-jacked and they will help you get rid of the bad stuff. Hope this helps

It is good to check your system resources. You should have 80% or better to run effeciently when you first start your computer. Most usually there is too many programs running in the background. Check your start menu. Go to run and type msconfig. Check selective startup and go to the startup tab. Uncheck any programs that are not nessasry at startup. MS office does not need to start and run in the background. It uses up lots of memory. The adaware download is good also as well as Norton utilities. MSN or yahoo popup blocker helps alot also. Check your resources again and see if that helps.

Lately, every time I visit this site and have my pop-up stopper disabled, my anti-virus program detects a trojan that is contained in a temporary internet file. Also, I am bombarded with every new virus that comes out, even before they become widely known. These viruses cover their tracks pretty well, but from some of the e-mail names that they steal from their host, I believe that host is one of my racing related buddies, very possibly a member of this site.
Don't think you don't have infected computer just because it doesn't act the way you think a virus acts. Get a good anti-virus program and use it. Mine is McAfee, and automatically updates itself, sometimes daily.
BTW, some of the new viruses do not require you to open anything, you just have to log onto the internet, and badda-boom, you've got it. First sign will be a drastic slow down of a fast connection.
