Dave Gorrell Wins 1st Feature at Tyler County Speedway

Fans and drivers made their return to Tyler County Speedway Saturday night for the season opener on the quarter-mile bullring. The mini-wedge feature started off the night. Pole sitter Codi Eaton jumped to the early lead and never looked back to claim his first feature win of the season. In the Litman Excavation and Construction Late Model Division fans saw Steve Weigle, Dave Gorrell and Mike Benedum taking the checkered flag in the heat races. Scott Irvin, Charlie Maloney and Freddie Carpenter all transferred to the feature from the b-main. Weigle and Gorrell would make up the front row for the feature event. Gorrell took the lead at the start of the event and led all 25 circuits around the speedway to win his first ever Late Model feature event at Tyler County Speedway. Scott Irvin finished in the runner-up spot with Benedum, Weigle and Butch McGill rounding out the top of the field.

In the Bill Forbes Chevrolet Semi-Late Division, heat winners Donnie Dotson and John Tallman led the field to the drop of the green flag. Tallman took the early lead with the caution flag falling on lap two. Tallman took the lead again on the restart and led until lap five when Donnie Dotson moved into first place. Dotson led the remaining 10 laps to pick up his first win of the season. Following Dotson across the AAA Homes Finish Line was Tallman in second, Billy Brown in third, Joe Loudin in fourth and Bucky Rine rounded out the top with a fifth place finish.

In the Freedom GMC AMRA Modifieds Feature Event Cody Barrack, Paul Wilmoth Jr and Louie Krushansky won their heat races. Butch Malone, Mark Dickson and Ronnie Schmitt transferred into the feature event from the consy. Barrack and Wilmoth led the field to the start of the feature event. Wilmoth led the first eight laps then Louie Krushansky made the pass for the lead. Krushansky went on to lead the remainder of the race and make his first return to McDonald’s Victory Lane in the 2005 season. Paul Wilmoth Jr followed for second with Kenny Johnson in third, Brent Trimble in fourth and Mike Wilson rounding out the top five with a fifth place finish.

In the WXCR 92.3 Street Stock division Glen Underwood and Bobby Keith won their heat races to make up the front row of their feature event. Underwood took the lead on lap one and led the entire race until two laps to go when Joel Prosser passed for the lead. Leading just the final two laps, Prosser took home the first win of the season in the Street Stock Division. Glen Underwood finished in second, Mike Martin in third, Doug Crall in fourth and Bobby Keith finished in fifth place.

Shawn Jett, Eric Francis and Roger Wright won their heat races in the Pure Stock Division. Jett and Francis led the field to the start of the feature event. Francis took the early lead and held strong for most of the event. However nearing the end of the race Jett made his move for the lead. Jett passed Francis with just two laps to go and went on for the win. Francis followed for second with Roger Wright in third, Brian Shaffer in fourth and Tim Skelton finished in fifth place.

The Dwarf Car Division sponsored by Valley Tire was the final event of the evening. Matt Herrick and Tracey Fritter won their heat races and make up the front row of their feature event. Fritter took the lead on lap one and never looked back to take home his first feature win as the Dwarf Cars made their return to the speedway.

With over 140 cars in the pits, the final feature event of the evening was still over by midnight. Next week at Tyler County Speedway will be Tax Relief Night for the fans.
