BOONE, IA – Race fans were dancing in the street late Thursday night in Blooming Prairie, Minn. Denizens Mark Noble and Trevis Underdahl ran 1-2 in the second of two 20-lap Modified qualifying features, with both advancing to Saturday night’s I.M.C.A. Speedway Motors Super Nationals main event at Boone Speedway.

Denny Stoneburner of Boone won the first feature by a much more comfortable margin than Noble’s. The top four finishers from both races will fill the first eight positions in the middle row, with Stoneburner and Noble going one-on-one in a five-lap dash Friday to decide the front spot.

Kevin Larkins of Greenwood, Neb., Roger ‘Chevy’ Hadan III of Omaha, Neb., and Jake Durbin of Perry chased Stoneburner across the finish line. Scott Mullen of Seymour, Wis., and the 19th starting Jeff Schroyer of Marshalltown rounded out the top four in the second feature.

Underdahl started outside the front row and led Jimmy Gustin of Marshalltown the first 14 times around the track. Noble, a three-time Super Nationals champion and now a 13-time Super Nationals qualifier, pulled even with Gustin on lap 15; Gustin got into the turn four wall on lap 16 to bring out the caution.

A second yellow, on lap 19, set up the sprint to the finish. Noble pulled ahead on the final straight, winning by a matter of inches.

Schroyer caught pole starter Scotty Brown of Dallas, Texas, and Independence’s Jerry Luloff in the late going to snare the final transfer spot.
Stoneburner, the Super Nationals Stock Car champion in 1997, took charge from outside row one and sailed to the win in the caution-free opening qualifier.

Larkins and Hadan ran all 20 laps in the second and third positions, respectively. Durbin took fourth away from Josh McGaha of Brownwood, Texas, on the ninth circuit.

Defending national champion and current points leader David Murray Jr. started 15th and finished a close fifth behind Durbin.

Second through fourth place finishers will draw for their middle row placement tomorrow night. The winners of 40 heat races advanced to one of the two features.

Larkins qualified for his sixth Super Nationals Modified main event, Schroyer for his third and Stoneburner for his second.

Durbin, Hadan, Mullen and Underdahl are first-time qualifiers.
Underdahl had started last in the final heat race Wednesday night. Hadan’s father Roger qualified for the Super Nationals feature in 1985 and 1988.

Trevis Underdahl lived a dream Thursday night.
The Minnesota native moved back to the Gopher State recently, after living in North Carolina for three years. He got his racing feet wet in an I.M.C.A. Modified in 2003, won his heat race last evening and then led the qualifying feature for 19-3/4’s lap before Mark Noble eked ahead at the checkers.
Both drivers call Blooming Prairie home and their shops are just four blocks apart.

“I grew up watching Mark race. He helped me set up my car for my first race,” said Underdahl. “It’s pretty special to race side-by-side with him, and to get into Super Nationals.”

Two drivers qualified from each of three Thursday heats for the Dirt Works Ron Efkamp Memorial Race of Champions.

2001 ROC winner and five-time Super Nationals champion John Logue topped the first heat, ahead of Indianola, Neb.’s Brice Riley. Dale Caswell of West Monroe, N.Y., took the second heat with Scott Hogan of Vinton in tow. Jon Thompson of Superior, Neb., won the third heat from the fourth row, with 2002 Super Nationals king Darren Williams of Salisbury, N.C., close behind.
Three more heats tomorrow night will add another half-dozen cars to the Saturday race field.
