CARTERSVILLE, GA – The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour will make its third try to run the $2,000-to-win Stars and Stripes 40 at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL this Friday night, and the $2,500-to-win Salute To The Armed Forces 50 at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL this Saturday night.

An all-star line-up of NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series drivers from past and present were in the Penton Raceway pit area on May 28 for the beginning of a Memorial Day Weekend racing extravaganza, only to have it rained out, not once, but twice. The NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS competitors, fans, and officials are hoping the third time will be a charm.

Not only were the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Championship contenders on hand on May 28, but they were joined by several drivers who have made series history through the years.

The 2010 line-up of drivers, including the defending NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Champion Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA, Justin McRee of Cuba, AL, Charlie Henderson of Cottondale, AL, Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS, Chris McElhenney of Lake, MS, Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS, Larry Harrod of Plains, GA, Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS, Jay Burchfield of Columbus, MS, and Frank Wilson of Harold, FL were getting ready to race.

Many of these drivers have raced with the series prior to this season, and they were spending some time with drivers they have raced against in season’s past.

Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA was on hand with his name solidly entrenched in the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS record book. Brindle was the 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion and the 2007 Rookie of the Year. When someone wins a championship, that means somebody had to finish second.

That somebody in 2008 and 2009 was Larry Boutwell of Baker, FL. Boutwell has cut back his racing program for 2010, but he was entered for the holiday weekend’s races. Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs, GA also cut back his racing efforts for 2010 to help launch his young son’s racing career in Quarter Midgets. Rainey, with five series career wins and seven career poles, was ready to race on May 28.

Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL, who was the series Rookie of the Year in 2008, and the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion was ready to defending his dominance of the two tracks, Knowles swept the Penton/East Alabama Motor Speedway weekend in 2009.

Another driver that had his broom out was William Thomas of Phenix City, AL. Thomas swept the Penton/East Alabama Motor Speedway NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS races in 2008, and has a successful racing pedigree of three generations. Thomas won the series season opener in January at Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS.

Add to that mix the top local favorites at Penton Raceway and East Alabama Motor Speedway like NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region title contenders Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL, Richie Stephens of Phenix City, AL, Craig Scott of Newnan, GA, Tod Darda of LaGrange, GA, Parrish Duncan of Newnan, GA, Ryan King of Anniston, AL, Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, AL, and Dana Eiland of Salem, AL.

With all of that talent, you have the ingredients for what is shaping up to be a memorable racing weekend this Friday night at Penton Raceway and this Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway.

East Alabama Motor Speedway fans will get an opportunity to be a part of the high-speed action, as the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS “Ride For Life” two-seat dirt late model will be at EAMS this Saturday night. Race fans will able to bid for a six-lap ride at race speed with their favorite driver with the proceeds benefiting the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Driver donating their time and talent to give six lucky fans the “Ride For Life” to benefit the American Cancer Society are William Thomas, Chase Edge, Richie Stephens, Larry Harrod, Dana Eiland and Terrance Nowell.

The Quality Inn in Opelika, AL at Exit 62 on I-85 will be the NeSmith Racing Official Host Hotel for the events this Friday night at Penton Raceway and this Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway. The Quality Inn will be offering NeSmith Racing fans and competitors a Special Discount Rate of $49.99 per night.
