FREMONT, Ohio (June 6, 2006) - Early in the June 6 National Sprint Tour main event at Fremont Speedway in Ohio, Danny Lasoski surveyed his options from third place.
“They had the top covered and the bottom covered, so I just went in the middle,” Lasoski said.
Once ‘The Dude’ got by Tim Shaffer and David Harrison, that was all he needed. Lasoski cruised to his third NST feature win of the year.
The 40-lap main got off to a rough start for many, including point leader Tim Kaeding. Kaeding, who needed a last lap pass for the fourth and final transfer spot in the B-main, moved up a few spots on the first lap of the main before trouble struck.
While attempting to pass Kerry Madsen, Kaeding spun and flipped in turn 4. Kaeding got back on the track before the race restarted, only to suffer more damage after more contact with Madsen. Kaeding ended up 14th, a lap down at the end.
Shaffer took the initial lead from pole while Harrison looked high for the lead. Harrison got the lead on lap 5, until Shaffer and Lasoski passed by going three-wide on lap 13.
Shaffer held the lead until lap 18, when Lasoski made the high groove work.
Once in front, Lasoski was not to be headed despite a few close calls in traffic. At one point, Lasoski was caught in the middle while lapping Brian Paulus and fast qualifier Jason Solwold.
“I was giving it all I had,” Lasoski said. “A couple of times I just had to bail.”
The main event took a while to get going, thanks to three yellows and two reds early.
“You’ve got to really think about getting your rhythm back,” Lasoski said. “The car was the same throughout. I think them other guys slowed down a little bit.”
Harrison fell back to fourth at one point before eventually moving back up to a second-place finish.
“The car was perfect,” Harrison said. “We could run anywhere we wanted to. The tires went away after one of those yellows, I can’t even remember which one. Once the tires warmed back up, I moved back up.”
By the end, Harrison felt he would have had something for the leader if there had been a yellow.
“I think I could have done something,” he said.
Butch Schroeder moved up from his eighth starting position to grab third at the finish.
“We knew we were good in the heat race,” Schroeder said. “We tweaked on the car a little, and I probably screwed it up a little. I thought I was going to be second for a while.”
Schroeder was glad team owner Dave Jessup allowed him to race Tuesday night.
“We wasn’t even going to come here,” Schroeder said.
Also moving up was Dale Blaney, who had to race through the B-main and started the A-main in 22nd.
“We get around here pretty good,” Blaney said. “We kept working on it. There were a lot of problems early in the main around us, so before I knew it I was 10th and thinking we had something for them. I just got caught with guys side-by-side in front of me, lap after lap.”
Shaffer faded from first to fifth by the end.
“I was good early, but the car went away,” he said. “It’s disappointing, but that’s part of racing. When you have the pole and don’t win, it’s hard.”
Heat races were won by Brock Mayes, Bryan Scott, Schroeder and Tim Hunter. Dashes were won by Shaffer and Jamie Miller.
There were 45 cars signed in, and the level of competition made things difficult for many of the NST regulars. Shane Stewart, Paul McMahan and Lucas Wolfe were unable to transfer out of the B-main. Steve Kinser was lapped near the end to finish 12th, while Solwold was 16th and Paulus 17th.
The Fremont race was the opening leg of a week that features five nights of racing in six nights. The NST next races Thursday and Friday at Susquehanna Raceway Park in Newberrytown, Penn.
