(Warrensburg, MO) Unseasonable weather patterns continued last evening at CMS for week number 13 of the 2009 championship campaign. After a night of thunderstorms rolled through the Warrensburg area in the early hours Saturday morning, fans were greeted with abundant sunshine and comfortable temps for edge-of-your seat competition from the 85 drivers signed in for competition for the night’s races. A total of 30 modifieds, 16 ULMA late models, 25 b-modifieds, and 14 street stocks took part in 17 races.

As they do each week, the b-modified drivers were first to hit the track for their qualifying heat races. Another solid field of competitors took part in 3 heat races and a b-main event. The qualifying races decided the feature event starting line-up later in the evening. Heat race number one went to point leader Jacob Ebert ahead of Michael King, Dalton Kirk, Gary Fain, and Ethan Isaacs. In heat two, Bryan Montgomery took the win over Lucas Isaacs, John Brooks, Bronson Combs, and Chris Whalen. The final heat saw Brad Smith win over of Jeremy Lile, Mark Evinger, Chris Brockway, and Jason Billups. The b-main went to Troy Carlyle, who finished ahead of Paul West, Owen Evinger, Curtis Shaner, and A.J. Tice as the final cars to transfer to the feature event. Ebert and Montgomery brought the field to the green for the 15-lap main event with Montgomery grabbing the first lap as Ebert battled back to lead lap two. After a few early-race cautions, Brad Smith grabbed the lead on lap three and never looked back as drivers fought for positions behind him. Montgomery’s strong run came to an end when he spun in turns three and four as the yellow flag was displayed. One more yellow slowed the field on lap nine; however, after that it was all Smith as he cruised to his sixth CMS victory this season. Jacob Ebert ran strong in second position and increased his point lead. Lucas Isaacs made a strong run to third, Michael King was fourth, as Dalton Kirk rounded out the top five.

The street stock contingent was up next for their two heat races. Heat number one had Brian Johnson taking another win over Herb Dannar, Michael Mullins, Tammy Korff, and Anthony Whitham. Chad Eickleberry drove to a win in heat two by besting Clayton Campbell, Bryce McMillin, John Ebert and T.J. Faulkenberry to the checkers. All fourteen cars on hand made the call for the 15-lap feature race with Eickleberry and Johnson on point at the drop of the green flag. The two leaders set themselves apart from the rest of the field in the early laps as Mullins and Campbell battled for third and fourth. A red flag was displayed on the field when Herb Dannar’s right-rear wheel assembly caught on fire on lap nine. Dannar was okay after the incident but was unable to re-start the race. The field went back to racing after the red-flag condition but the yellow flag flew yet again, this time for Bryce McMillin’s stalled machine in corner number one. Once the race resumed, Johnson had a bumper full of Eickleberry behind him but was able to claim his seventh feature win of the year with Eickleberry second. Michael Mullins ran solid in third with Campbell fourth, Anthony Whitham recorded his best finish of the year and rounded out the top five.

Up next on the bill were the full-bodied cars and drivers of the ULMA late model division for their two heat races. For qualifying heat number one, Allen Perryman of Belton visited victory lane for the first time in quite some time with a convincing win ahead of Bob King, Dwight Niehoff, Danny Monroe, and Brian Pipes. Heat two went to last week’s feature winner Randy Ainsworth, over Jon Binning, Bob Test, Danny Lorton, and John Pipes. Perryman and Ainsworth started up front at the drop of the green flag for the late model feature race. Close competition through the field for each position was the highlight of the race as several drivers ran strong for top-tier finishes. Ainsworth was trying to become the first repeat winner in nine races with nine different winners this year and looked strong early on as he led the majority of the race until some late-race caution flag periods slowed the race. The field was slowed on several occasions just as Bob King found a fast line on the high side of the track with several passes on Ainsworth for the lead. Each time the yellow came out, the last completed lap leader resumed the lead on the restart as Ainsworth tried to hold back King in second. Bob Test ran strong in the field behind the leaders in third in a great battle with Danny Monroe and Dwight Niehoff. With a green-white-checkered flag finish looming; King powered his way around Ainsworth to claim the top spot. Ainsworth tried to stay with him on the low side but King went on to become the tenth different winner in ten races! It was King’s first ULMA feature win of the year as the crowd roared with thunderous applause when he exited the car in victory lane. Ainsworth settled for second with Bob Test third. Monroe again ran strong and came away with his second-consecutive fourth place finish just in front of Dwight Niehoff, who ran to a strong fifth-place run with an injured wrist. Danny Lorton with smooth run in in the field finished in the sixth position.

Another talent-rich field of modifieds competed in four heat races and a b-main event prior to the nightcap 20-lap feature race. The top five from each of the heat races transferred on to the main event. In heat race number one, Jason Thompson was victorious over Dave Meyer, Dennis Walrath, Terry Schultz and Terry Van Trump. Point leader Aaron Marrant grabbed the win in heat race number two over Tim Karrick, Donnie Dannar, Darren Shaw, and Tyler Dowell. Luke Feeback had missed a couple of weeks of competition but came back strong with a win in heat three ahead of Richard Layne, Dean Wille, Ed Griggs, and Austin Siebert. In the fourth and final heat race, Dustin Boney secured the win by crossing the line first ahead of Steve Twenter, Jimmy Dowell, Nick Pence, and Chad Staus. For the b-main modified event, four more cars transferred to the feature with Mark Dotson, Gary Billings Jr, Joey Lile, and Holt Johnson grabbing the transfer spots. The field of 24 modifieds all made the call for the feature race with Jason Thompson and Aaron Marrant starting on the front row. Early in the race, Thompson ran strong with Dustin Boney close behind. Dave Meyer and Aaron Marrant, who have had some exciting runs together in recent weeks, again ran together in the third and fourth positions. Tim Karrick looked like he was a man on a mission early in the race but several encounters on the high side caused him to slip back outside of the top five. Boney made a pass for the lead on lap number eight with heavy lapped traffic making things interesting for the next four laps as Thompson remained close in second. Meyer and Marrant continued to run close in positions three and four with Dennis Walrath, Dean Wille, and Karrick trying to run inside the top five. A caution flag flew on lap 16 for Gary Billings, Jr., which set up a four-lap run to the checkers. In the end, Boney pulled comfortably away from the rest of the field and sailed on to his third feature win of the year, becoming the first driver in the modified division to win more than two races. Thompson settled for second with Dave Meyer making a late charge to third. Marrant came away with a fourth-place finish ahead of Dennis Walrath in fifth. Karrick recovered nicely and came away with a sixth place run to the checkered flag.

CMS will have a military presence next weekend when the track hosts Army National Guard Race night, Saturday, August 1st. All race divisions will again race their way towards victory lane in the modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks and b-modifieds.
