Fantastic weather and fantastic racing action … what more could any race fan ask for? The answer to that question came during last night’s races at CMS as fans witnessed the final high-paying race for the ‘mighty’ modifieds of the year as well as the b-modified, street stock and ULMA late model divisions. The race program features a total of sixteen events with 81 cars checked in for the night. Since 1998, track owners Earl and Susan Walls have hosted thirty-three special modified events for their premier division at the speedway. In what could be the final special event for the modifieds under the direct promotion of the Walls family, a great field of 81 cars and the always dedicated contingent of CMS race fans flocked to the speedway to see Dustin Boney claim the $3,000 top prize.

Thirty-one modified competitors pulled into the track in hopes of making the 24-car starting grid for the main event. Four exciting heat races and one b-main determined the overall starting spots for the feature race with each qualifying heat producing some fierce competition. In heat race number one, current track point’s leader Aaron Marrant held off a strong running Lucas Conley for the win with Tom Charles, Justin Boney, and Luke Driskell also transferring into the feature. For heat number two, Clinton, Missouri driver Dennis Walrath held off Jake Richards for the win with Dean Wille, Tim Karrick, and Jason Bodenhamer grabbing the remaining transfer spots. Heat race number three saw veteran Concordia, Missouri driver ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer cruise to a win over Shad Badder, Matt Johnson, ‘Chargin’ Charlie Ebert and Nick Newton. The fourth and final heat went to Dustin Boney over Terry Schultz, Josh Stephens, Jimmy Dowell and Chad Lyle. The b-main determined the final four starting positions with Jim Moody, Joey Lile, Richard Layne, and Steve Twenter all racing their way into the final starting grid. Aaron Marrant and Dennis Walrath held the front row at the drop of the green flag with Marrant pacing the field early on. Dave Meyer and Dustin Boney hung right with the leader with Meyer trying to get around Marrant on the low side with Boney up high. Meyer grabbed the lead just past lap ten but on the next go around it was Dustin Boney who led the field after Meyer got stuck behind a slower car. Meanwhile, Wille, Karrick, and Schultz battled three-wide for position for several laps until a caution flag flew on lap nineteen. Just one lap short of halfway the race went green again after a quick caution period with Boney comfortably out front. On lap twenty-eight, fourth-place runner Shad Badder looped his car off of corner four and brought out another caution flag. Again on the restart Meyer tried to pressure for the lead but could not make the pass on Boney who again pulled away. Several drivers started deep in the field but wound up near the front of the field by race end, including Jake Richards who made his way to third by lap thirty. Chad Lyle, Matt Johnson, and Jim Moody also ran strong picking up several positions. With one final restart on lap thirty-four, Boney had to hold off the field for six more laps and did just that by taking his second feature win of the year. Behind Boney at the line were Jake Richards in second, Meyer third, Terry Schultz with a great run to fourth, and Chad Lyle up from twentieth to fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Moody, Marrant, Wille, Johnson, and Karrick.

Thirteen ULMA late models made their way to the track for competition. Wild heat races were the order of the night and the late models were no exception to this rule as the qualifying heat races got off to a rough start. Several cars were involved in early race incidents in the first heat but luckily all competitors were able to continue even though the yellow flag flew several more times before the race was completed. After the dust settled, Mike Ryun sailed to his sixth heat win of the year with Brett Rollert and Brett Wood close behind in a heated battle for second and third. For the second heat, Bob King ran a strong race to the checkers with Steven Clancy and Jon Binning in hot pursuit. In the 15-lap feature, several cautions flew early in the race for spinning cars on the tricky race surface. Ryun continued leading all the while with Brett Rollert putting continuous pressure on him for the lead the entire race with Bob King lurking. In one of the best up-front features of the year, Mike Ryun kept high-side Brett Rollert behind him the entire race distance and claimed his second feature of the year. Rollert finished second with King third, Jon Binning in fourth, David Angell with a nice top five in fifth and Randy Ainsworth sixth.

Sixteen street stocks raced in two preliminary qualifying heat races. In heat race number one, Tammy Korff kept a strong field behind her #PMS1 machine and claimed her third heat victory of the year, this time ahead of Anthony Ward and Dale Atkinson. After several restart attempts the second and final heat race went to current point’s leader Nic Bennett over Jerry Schmidt and Michael Mullins. The top two in points started on the front row of the main event with Tammy Korff and Nic Bennett holding the first and second spots early on until a lap-five caution flag flew for debris on the track. Once green flag action continued, Korff continued leading with Bennett and Anthony Ward chasing her for the lead. Ward took the second spot away from Bennett with a caution flag flying shortly thereafter. Upon the ensuing restart, Korff had her hands full with Ward and Bennett up front. Contact between Ward and Korff caused another yellow flag as the leaders spun in front of the entire field with several other cars also involved. Yet another restart came next with Bennett the new race leader with ten laps down. More excitement occurred on lap eleven as the cars of Chad Eickleberry and Korff were involved in contact on the speedway with both cars done for the night after being involved in their second yellow-flag incidents. Ward and Anthony Witham were the next to be involved in a caution flag with Ward having to leave the track after being disqualified for rough driving. After a long and hard-fought battle, Bennett padded his point lead with his first-ever feature race win in three years. Behind the winner at the line were Kevin Perkins, Jerry Schmidt, John Miller, and Dustin Gehlkin inside the top five.

Twenty-one b-modified drivers showed up to compete in three heat races to set the field for the main event. The first heat race got off to a rough start as ‘the Country Singer’ Charlie Palmer went off the turn-three embankment at a high rate of speed and wound up in the tree line. Thankfully, Charlie was okay but unable to continue after a long delay in race action. Once things continued, Bryan Montgomery grabbed his first heat-race win of the year ahead of Jeremy Lile, Ed ‘Bubba’ Kline, and Chris Brockway. The second heat went to Stephen Barber, with his second heat win of the year over Brian Ziegler and Ethan Isaacs. The best b-mod heat of the night was the third and final race with side-by-side racing between Brad Smith, Mark Evinger, Rusty Trimble, and Scotty Martin. Late in the race Trimble spun, which brought out a yellow flag, setting up a three-lap dash to the finish. In the end, Brad Smith claimed his third heat of the year with Evinger and Martin close behind. It took two attempts to get the feature race underway with two caution flags flying early before the drivers settled into a race rhythm. Montgomery held the point early with Jeremy Lile in second until Lile made heavy contact with the turn four wall and ultimately falling all the way back to tenth. A lap-eight restart saw Montgomery still pacing the field with Brad Smith and Brian Ziegler inside the top three. One more late-race restart slowed the race but in the end no one had anything for Montgomery as he claimed his second feature of the year. Brad Smith equaled his best CMS feature performance with a runner-up finish. Brian Ziegler claimed third with Martin fourth, Evinger fifth and Ethan Isaacs rounding out the top six.

Be sure to join us one final time next Saturday night, September 6th for the season championships in all divisions.
