(Macon, IL) Heading into the next-to-final race night at Macon Speedway, Steve Ewing trailed Blake Shelley by four points for the Street Stocks track champion. Ewing would draw to within two points with a win in the Illinois Street Stock Championship race Saturday at Macon Speedway. Battling strong with Springfield’s Wendell Zulauf, Jr., Ewing snatched the lead from Zulauf coming to lap 11 as Ewing maneuvered to the bottom of the track, a place Zulauf appeared untouchable throughout the race’s first ten laps.
As the action restarted following a caution, Ewing bypassed Zulauf and took it the distance for his 11th feature of the year. Blake Shelley, the points leader, grabbed second from Argenta’s Kevin Crowder and finished behind Ewing. With that, the lead would only be shaved two points by Ewing and set up the closet points chase left of the remaining divisions.
The Touchstone Energy Sportsman division wrapped up their points with Rick Roedel getting his first Macon Speedway track championship. Leading by 20 points over Scott Landers into the final night, Roedel would finish fourth, two spots behind Landers in the feature, but would lay claim to the championship. Dave Crawley, Jr., who is leading in the Modifieds points standings, won his third Touchstone Energy Sportsman feature in the Myers Carpeting C25.
With still another week remaining in the Modifieds division, Dave Crawley’s lead in the points was 46 over Buffalo’s Joe Strawkus. That lead would be trimmed as Crawley suffered a setback and Strawkus took the checkered flag in a feature for the first time since 2005. Crawley’s setback would be a flat left-rear tire that would be changed in the infield but he would have to start from the back of the pack after having the racecar worked on during the race. Crawley made up some ground within the race’s final three laps but Strawkus, who still has an outside chance at the Modifieds championship, cut a huge chunk of the 46-point deficit. Much like the Street Stocks division, the Modified division will also have to wait until the feature is over to claim its 2009 champion.
James Hankins of Taylorville, IL., won the Pro Hornets feature, his first of 2009, leading all eight laps. Daniel Walker took the Amateur Hornet feature on a wild last lap pass of Jonathan Drake for his first checkered flag feature.
It was almost the second feature of 2009 for Nic Harris in the POWRi Micros but as he came to the fourth turn of the final lap, flagman Joey Webb waving the checkered flag, Harris, trying to avoid a lapped Micro, spun out and lost his chance for the win, second place then became first place and Jeremy Camp of Blue Mound, IL., received the victory. With the ninth visit to Macon by the POWRi Micros, there have now been nine different feature winners.
Another incredible night of stock car racing came to a visit shortly after 11pm. 35 Street Stocks were vying for the big-money prize and sensational trophy. They were even given the chance to qualify and fans saw history made as the six-year track record was broken by Decatur’s Mike Pickering. Blake Shelley took hold of the record on September 20, 2003, with a time of 12.817, fell to the seventh qualifier out of the gate and the new record is established as 12.564.
Next Saturday night marks the season finale for all divisions and the 64th consecutive season of stock car racing at Macon Speedway. Another terrific show is in store for the crowd as the speedway will welcome the O’Reilly’s POWRi Midgets for the fourth time and the tenth visit from the Micros. Also on hand will be Modifieds, Street Stocks and Pro and Amateur Hornets. Who will win the Street Stocks championship? The Modified Championship?
