Chris Carlson takes home “THE CROWN” at the Missouri State Triple Crown Championship!!

Greenfield WI driver Chris Carlson in what is quickly becoming the infamous C12 took home the Fastrak Missouri State Triple Crown Championship over the Memorial Day weekend. The three day event was quite a show and the largest ever crate engine late model field to be seen in the area. Carlson took home the championship as it came down to the last day at Montgomery County Speedway in New Florence Missouri. Carlson and the 05 Fastrak Mid West Champion we tied going into night three. Several other drivers were right on their heels and had both Carlson and Morris had bad nights any one of six drivers could have ended up taking home the crown.

Night one at Midway Speedway in Lebanon MO Morris was fast. After the dash Morris sat on the pole with Carlson starting in the 4th row. Lap one several cars got together as several cars were entangled in the first turn including the 81 of Morris. Morris finds out after the race he has suffered some damage which effected the handling on the CAT machine sponsored car. Lap 30 of the 40 lap main and Carlson had worked his way through the field catching the first place car of Morris. The two raced side by side for four laps with Carlson taking advantage of the ill handling car of Morris and winning the event. Morris came in second which separated them by one point going into night two of the Championship.

Night two came about at the Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon MO. The configuration was completely different from the previous nights Midway Speedway and proved to be a challenge to some of the top competitors. The 28 car of Eric Rudd found himself sitting on the pole with the 25 of Matt Dusablon on the outside of row one. The 11H of Shelby Thacker sat on row two along with the 92k of Krankel. Krankel has come from the back of the dash trying a different chassis set up and he was flying. Local favorite and Midway current points leader Jarrod Harris rounded out the top 6 positions. Where were Friday nights two top finishers? Morris started sixth row and Carlson in the ninth row not making the six lap dash for the pole. No doubt this was about to get interesting as fast cars were spread throughout the field. Morris works his way through the field as and takes the lead on lap twenty one as cars were stacked up three wide behind him. Lap 25 and Carlson now slides into second place. Out comes a caution and the fight is on! Morris on the outside and Carlson on the inside from lap twenty seven through the final lap of forty. Although there were three cautions during that time Morris would head for the high side and Carlson would once again head low. These guys ran the last thirteen laps side by side. Carlson would take the lead down the front straight and Morris would take it back down the back stretch. Never touching each other the entire time this was anyones race. Morris edged Carlson out for the win. Morris afterwards dripping wet stated “that was fun” in victory lane. “Chris raced me clean. That’s great racing when you can trust the guy beside you like that”. Chris Carlson’s brother and PR person was quoted as calling his dad on the phone afterwards. “Dad I just saw the best late model race I have ever seen and we ran second”.

Night three Montgomery County Speedway, New Florence MO. Morris and Carlson tied going into night three for the Championship with the teams of Jarrod Harris, Tom Krankel, Jim Wheat, Chuck Still, Josh Carroll and Ron Myers all within striking distance should Morris and Carlson have a bad night. Morris starts in the last row in his heat as Carlson starts on the second row. Tough draw for Morris. Shannon Kuhn starts on the front row of the feature with the car of Jimmy Wheat. Carlson, Dusablon, Carroll, Harris and finish out the top six for the feature event. S the track blacked over pretty quickly everyone was hugging the bottom and Kuhn was not about to give up. Morris starting in position eighteen was coming hard as the race progressed. The 15 car of rookie Will Hicks was running well starting in the eighth position only to have trouble early in the event. Morris was coming. Kuhn was not about to give up the point as he continued to hug the bottom with Carlson bending in his left rear quarter panel several times trying to edge by on the inside. Morris was still coming. Carlson tried over and over to get by the 11 car of Kuhn but Kuhn was not to be denied this night. Kuhn became the eventual winner with Carlson finishing second and Morris finished wearing out his right rear coming through the field. Kuhn celebrated his win in victory lane with Carlson stopped on the front straight taking home the first Fastrak Missouri Sate Triple Crown Championship. Mel Kinnard owner of the Montgomery County Speedway had a huge bonfire after the nights events allowing the competitors to sit back and reflect on the Championship. What a great time it was!!

Look for more of the same in 2007. Great racing, great tracks and fans on their feet.
