Memphis, TN (6/17/05) – On Friday night, the Stacker 2 Mid America Racing Series invaded the ¼ mile, gumbo oval at Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis, Tennessee, and when the checkered flag flew on the 40 lap affair, the Fireball, Jeff Floyd was standing in victory lane.

Twenty-nine M.A.R.S. Super Late Models, representing four states, signed in to do battle for the $3,000 top prize. After heat race action was complete, Gary Stolba from Willow Springs, Missouri was the JFR Graphics Pole Qualifier. Joining Stolba on the front row was three time series champion, Bill Frye. The first two attempts to get the event underway would be waived off for individual spins involving Dewaine Hottinger and Dane Dacus. The third attempt to get the event underway would be a charm with Stolba rocketing into the lead with fourth starting Billy James, and Bill Frye in tow. By lap three, Stolba had a two car length lead over James as third starting Dean Carpenter raced past Frye for the third spot.

Lap seven would see the leaders approaching lapped traffic, and Carpenter used the traffic to his advantage to take over the second spot from Billy James only to have the caution fly for debris on the track, giving the second position back to James. At the time of the caution, the top five runners were Stolba, James, Carpenter, Jeff Floyd (who started sixth), and Bill Frye. On the restart, Stolba maintained a slim advantage on the field with Floyd slipping by Carpenter for the third spot. Over the next few laps James would begin to hound Stolba for the lead, while Floyd tried to reel in the frontrunners. Caution would be displayed again on lap eleven for Jordan Jones, who rolled to a stop in turn three. With the field lined up for their signature, double file restart, Floyd set his sights on the lead, and he would take advantage of a good run on the cushion exiting turn one on the ninth circuit to race past James and Stolba to become the new leader. James would follow Floyd past Stolba for the second position exiting turn four on lap nine.

The caution flag would waive one again on lap twelve, as the pole sitter, Gary Stolba, rolled to a stop in turn two with a flat tire. During the caution, Stolba headed to the pits for fresh rubber and rejoined the tail of the field. On the restart, Floyd jumped to a two car length lead on the field before James reeled him back in on the thirteenth circuit, and the pair began to wage war for the lead. Lap thirteen would also see sixth place runner, Bill Frye, retire to the infield with mechanical woes. Over the next several laps the leaders continued to battle for the lead through lapped traffic, and by lap twenty-five the leaders were experiencing heavy traffic. James took advantage of Floyd getting held up behind the lapped car of Jordan Jones on the twenty-ninth circuit to take over the spot as the Memphis crowd came to their feet. Floyd rebounded from being tied up behind the lapped car to move in on James back bumper on lap thirty-two. Disaster struck for James exiting turn four on the thirty-third circuit, when a control arm broke on his car causing him to do a 360 in the middle of the track, giving up three positions. James’ misfortune was Floyd’s good fortune, and he reclaimed the lead and went on to take the feature win over Dean Carpenter, Wendell Wallace, Billy James, and Terry Phillips.

Heat races were won by Gary Stolba, Billy James, Bill Frye, and Jessie Bailey with Jordan Jones and Justin Wells claiming the twin b-mains. Dane Dacus utilized a series provisional to start tailback on the field.
