Weekly racing sanctioned by the United Late Model Association (ULMA) continued last weekend with all four affiliated tracks in action. J.D. Hubert became the first repeat winner of the year as David Barker, Jeff Schlup, and Larry Clawson, Jr. added their names to the winners list with their first victories of the year. The busy weekend kicked off with Friday-night racing at Butler Motor Speedway (BMS) and Callaway Raceways. Then, action continued on Saturday night with Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) and Lucas Oil Speedway.
Friday's event at Butler featured one of the closest finishes so far this year as three drivers took the battle for the win right down to the wire. David Barker and Jake Williams were victorious in the two heat races and by virtue of their wins; both drivers started on row one for the 20-lap feature race. Barker grabbed the early lead but Williams never let the leader out of his direct sight the entire race distance. The drivers all found their race rhythm just before the midpoint of the race and ultimately ran hard to the checkered flag. The race featured some great racing between Kevin Coyne, Kevin Kaiser, and Robbie Test inside the top five. Kaiser fought his way to the front in the race's late stages from his sixth starting position in a classic battle with Coyne for third with Randy Ainsworth and Robbie Test racing hard for the fifth position right until the checkered flag waved. On the white flag lap, Williams was nose-to-tail with Barker's as the pair maneuvered their way through lapped traffic. At the stripe, Williams made one last-ditch effort to overtake Barker. With dust flying and cars splitting lapped traffic, the finish had the fans on their feet! After the dust settled, Barker emerged with his first win of the year over Williams and Kaiser. Coyne maintained fourth at the line with Ainsworth and Test fifth and sixth. Danny Lorton, John Farmer, Keith Short, and Allen Perryman rounded out the top ten. By the end of the night, California, Missouri driver Jeff Schlup added his name to the list of new winners. Other strong ULMA finishes were posted by brothers Evan (2nd) and J.D. (4th) Hubert, from Cross Timbers, Missouri. The Hubert brothers have ventured out more this year and have ran strong no matter what track they pull into. Robbie Wright, A.L. Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO held its second weekly race of the year this past Saturday. There were 14 member drivers competing among the 20 late models present. Kevin Kaiser and J.D. Hubert were among the heat race winners at Lucas on Saturday. In the feature event, J.D. Hubert became the first driver this year to win his second overall feature. Bryon Allison of Marshall, Missouri posted his best finish of the year with a nice run to third, just ahead of Kaiser and Jake Williams inside the top five. Central Missouri Speedway hosted 18 late models Saturday night, 14 drivers were ULMA members. It took two heat races to determine the lineup for the main event. Heat race one featured Jefferson City driver Robbie Test grabbing the win over Allen Perryman and Randy Ainsworth. The second heat race saw Larry Clawson, Jr. take the win over Jon Binning and Kevin Coyne. Robbie Test and Clawson brought the field to green at the start of the main event; however, trouble right from the start resulted in new member driver Bob Cummings being unable to finish. The field ran strong on the restart for seven laps with Robbie Test showing the way over Clawson in a fierce battle for the lead. On lap eight, Perryman's car went around in turn two to bring out the second caution period. With Clawson now the leader and after one more yellow flag condition, the drivers again found a rhythm and raced for the win. David Barker was the man on the move by using the high side to race his way from eighth to third. Coyne and Bob Test also gained positions to run inside the top five. By the end of the race, it was Clawson, Jr. who bagged his first-ever CMS win over Robbie Test, Barker, Coyne, Bob Test and defending track champion Binning.
