BRUNSWICK, Ga. (Feb. 2) — Getting his first victory for new car owner Dale Beitler, Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., took the lead from polesitter Billy Moyer midway through the 50-lap finale at Golden Isles Speedway's Super Bowl of Racing IV and led the rest of the way for a victory worth $10,000.
Moyer stayed within striking distance of Francis much of the second half of the race, but he faded in the final laps to settle for second with fellow front-row starter Eric Jacobsen finishing third. Brady Smith rallied from 20th to finish fourth.
Moyer and Jacobsen were lucky to make it one lap as the race got off to a wild start. Moyer got a flat tire on the first start and Jacobsen spun as they collided exiting turn two. On the next start, Moyer slowed with apparent suspension damage and as the caution appeared on the backstretch, Mark Andersen's car got upside down in turn three. The red flag appeared and Andersen climbed from his car, apparently unhurt.
Moyer was able to make repairs and return for the third start, as was Jacobsen, who had broken a steering rack. When the race finally got rollling, Moyer took command from the outset and built a half- straightaway lead before Francis closed in and made his lap-26 pass in turn one.
Third-starting Scott Bloomquist, who won the previous two Super Bowl events, pitted during an early caution and faded from the outset. He retired on the 20th lap. Three-race winner Jimmy Owens was sixth, but picked up $10,000 for winning the Dart Winternationals points chase for the seven-race miniseries. — Courtesy DirtonDirt.com
