Steve Francis of Ashland,KY captured his first World Of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series sanctioned main event of the 2005 season Friday powering the MOPAR Performance Parts/Valvoline No. 15 Steve Francis Racing Rocket Chassis/Gary Stanton Racing,Inc. Dodge Intrepid R/T to the $10,000 payday at “The Rock”/Allegany County Speedway in Cumberland,MD. Starting third, “The Kentucky Colonel” blasted past race long leader Tim McCreadie in turn four while working lap 18 to snare the lead which he would never give up. Pole sitter Darrell Lanigan just nipped 17th starting Scott Bloomquist at the finish for the second spot. Dale McDowell rode home fourth with Billy Moyer fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Dan Schlieper in sixth trailed by Mark Banal, Mike Balzano, Jeremy Miller and Alex Ferree.

“You know this thing just kept getting better and better as the race went on,” stated the happy winner from victory circle. “I’m not sure what happened to Tim, but he raced me clean going through those holes. Something must’ve broke on his car. We had to do some adjusting to the new Hoosier Tires but I’ll tell you what those things are just unreal. The car was really, really good all night. The driver had a bit of brain fade during time trials and we should’ve done better there. I just want to thank promoter Rick Jones and all these fans that came out tonight.”

Lanigan was very happy with the second place finish. “Oh yeah we‘re happy with the second,” said Lanigan. “Whenever your racing a points deal like we are this year, your always happy with a top five and move on to the next one. We’ll take the points and not worry about them now. They all add up in the big picture. Last year we got behind the eight-ball with the points and knock on wood we won’t have that this year. We’re doing pretty good right now.”

Bloomquist, the defending World Of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series champion, just about didn’t make it to “The Rock” as a borrowed truck he was using broke it’s hitch just a few miles from his Mooresburg,TN home. A switch to a small one-car trailer and using the motorhome that normally pulls the Bloomquist souvenir trailer got Bloomquist to the track with 45 minutes to spare. For Bloomquist the third place finish was a great ending to a bad start to his day.

When asked if he was happy with the third place finish Bloomquist said, “Absolutely! It was a rough trip getting up here. We only had room for one car and a limited amount of tools and tires. Chub Frank helped us out tonight loaning us a welder and a few other things. We had a little bit of rough start there in the heat. We were too tight and hit those holes and it cost us in the heat race. But, it was probably good that we had to run the “B” Main cause it allowed us a chance to get to know this place a little better. We got the car good for the feature and steadily worked our way to the front.”

Lanigan and McCreadie brought the 25 car field to the green flag racing side by side with until McCreadie worked his way in front at the end of the first lap with Lanigan, Banal, Francis and Moyer trailing. McCreadie opened up a good lead on Lanigan and the field when the races first caution flew on lap 3 when Bo Feathers spun in turn four.

McCreadie enjoyed the advantage with the “Delaware Double-File Restart” pulling away from his pursuers. Moyer shot past Francis on lap 4 to garb fourth from Francis and one lap later Banal took the second spot from Lanigan. Before lap 6 could be recorded the yellow waved again for a six-car tangle in turn two. That skirmish involved the cars of Rick Eckert, John Blankenship, Rob Blair, Billy Decker, Chub Frank and D.J. Troutman. Blair, Decker and Troutman were done for the remainder of the race with Eckert going pitside for repairs and returning several laps down.

Once the race was restarted, McCreadie pulled out to very healthy margin by lap 9 as Lanigan worked his way back past Banal for the second spot. Francis had began to work his way to the front nabbing third by lap 12. McCreadie enjoyed a nearly 5 second lead on Lanigan but that was wiped out when the caution waved on lap 18 when Jack Pencil rolled to a stop in turn two.

Back under green, McCreadie’s car seemed to lose the handling as Francis shot past Lanigan for the runner-up spot as McDowell and Bloomquist moved into fourth and fifth respectively. Francis quickly moved in on McCreadie heading down the long back straightaway. Entering turn three McCreadie’s car pushed up the race track allowing Francis to sneak past on the bottom of turn four. Lap 22 saw McCreadie suddenly lose control exiting turn four turning down across the race track and into the inside retaining wall. A broken suspension part was the culprit plus McCreadie had lost his brakes a few laps prior to the incident.

On the restart, contact between Lanigan and Banal, who was now third, sent Lanigan slicing across the race track directly in front of the field, though Lanigan was able to gather his car back up and continue. The resulting chain collision involved 10 cars bringing out the red flag with Shane Clanton, Josh Richards, Charlie Schaffer, Chub Frank, Kirk Ryan Jr. and Bo Feathers unable to continue. After the event Lanigan was befuddled with Banal. “I really don’t now what he was doing. I was on the outside of him and I don’t know if he’s not used to the World Of Outlaws restarts. When you run with the World Of Outlaws guys they all know how the procedures work. I don’t know if he didn’t know there was someone outside of him or not. But it caused a whole bunch of cars to get torn up.”

Once the carnage was cleared from the race track Francis simply put it on cruise control the rest of the way opening up a more than 4 second advantage on Lanigan. With 10 laps to go the top 10 running order showed Francis, Lanigan, McDowell, Bloomquist and Moyer holding down the first five spots trailed by Banal, Balzano, Schlieper, Clint Smith and Jeremy Miller. As the laps wound down Francis saw his lead whittled down some by Lanigan as the leader had caught the backmarkers. Bloomquist made a late race charge taking third from McDowell with seven circuits to go and then moved in on Lanigan pulling alongside of the runner-up as they raced for the checkered flag.
