FOR IMMEDAITE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – June 15, 2014 - Former five-time tour champion Brian Franz took the lead at the races midway point and never looked back as he claimed victory honors as the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products modified division wrapped up their two day race weekend Sunday night at 81 Speedway as part of the tracks “Hoosier Daddy” Father’s Day spectacular.

Jon Thompson, who came into the weekend as the tour’s point leader, started on the pole for the thirty lap feature and quickly took the lead as the green flag fell. The man chasing him in the point standings, Marc Hurd, gave chase throughout the early stages of the event and got his break on lap seven when the red flag appeared as Thompson’s motor expired heading down the backstretch.

Once racing action went green, Hurd jumped out into the lead while sixth starting Franz and former tour champion John Allen battled for the runner up position. The motor in Allen’s modified had enough and on lap fourteen he exited his battle with Franz for the second and went pit side with a blown motor.

Lap sixteen saw Franz make his move and would take the lead and never look back. The modified veteran was on his way to his first victory of the year and it had to wait as the caution fell with one lap to go when Johnny Whitmore, Casey McClaskey and Kevin Kemp got together sitting up a green, white and checkered.

The final restart was not problem for Franz as he would go on to claim the victory. Hurd originally crossed the line second but failed to go directly to the scales resulting in being disqualified. This gave Jason McGehee the runner up position while second “B” feature winner Dan Powers moved through the field to finish third. Nineteenth starting Nic Baalman came home fourth while Jace Wedel rounded out the top five.

The three heat races for the 28 car field were won by Hurd, Brendon Gemmill and McGehee with Kemp and Powers winning both “B” features.

While not a point race, the NCRA modified drivers are encouraged to take on the United States Modified Touring Series this Thursday night at 81 Speedway in Park City. The next point race for the tour will be over the Independence Day weekend with two events slated. It all kicks off on Friday night, July 4, at 81 Speedway before making their first of two appearances at the Belleville High Banks in Belleville, Kansas on Saturday night.
