by Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

BATESVILLE AR. Bill Frye and Charlie Randolph each claimed titles with the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series. After a grueling schedule of 30 events, Bill Frye won the closest points battle in the brief history of the O'Reilly M.A.R.S. series. In each previous year, the winner of the championship had over 100 points on his nearest competitor. This year, Frye only had 12 markers to spare in taking his third consequitive title.

Bill Frye had six series wins in 2003, including the biggest ever in O'Reilly M.A.R.S. racing, the Bill Willard Memorial worth $10,000. Frye also had 23 top 5's, and 27 top 10's. Terry Phillips, who finished second to Frye, had a similar mark of top 5's and 10's, but won an amazing 14 features. DNF's in the middle of the season was Phillips's un-doing, and Frye posted nine pole's for the season, which added two bonus points for each one, which paved the way for his win.

Charlie Randolph won the Kuntz and Company Rookie of the Year Championship. Randolph entered the competition against seven other rookie contenders. Two ended up providing competition for Randolph, but Randolph was able to secure the title several weeks prior to Frye's third title win.

Frye will pick up $30,000 at this years awards banquet in December in Tunica, Mississippi. Phillips will still pocket $15,000 for second, and Jeff Taylor $10,000 for his third place run. Randolph will be $8,000 richer after the awards banquet. He will take the $3,000 first place check for the Kuntz & Company Rookie title, plus an additional $5,000 for his seventh place run in the overall points. This year's awards banquet will truly be an event to be remembered, as series president Mooney Starr will award over $100,000 in cash, and even more in contigency awards.
