To borrow a line from an old Meatloaf song, “On a hot summer night, would you offer” … in this case $2,000 to the winner of the first ‘big one’ for the Mighty Modifieds? Answer is, a resounding yes as Earl and Susan Walls hosted a jam packed grandstand full of dedicated racing fans and 36 of the finest modified drivers in the area. It took five heat races to sort out the starting field for the feature event with Jim Roach, Blackburn, Lee Hibner, Jimmy Dowell and Justin Boney taking the wins and Joe Bradshaw picking up the b-main win. The top four finishers in both the heat races and b-main made up the 24-car starting field for the 40 lapper. At the drop of the green flag it was Roach and Fulton, Missouri’s Blackburn setting the early pace. These two drivers, along with Lee Hibner and Justin Boney waged a torrid battle for the top spot for the first half of the feature event until caution flew for the first time just past the mid-way point. Local favorite ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer was an early victim to mechanical issues as were Aaron Marrant, Lonnie Hibner, David Angell, Terry Schultz, ‘Fast’ Richard Layne, Jim Moody and Joe Bradshaw. Blackburn and Hibner continued to battle for the top spot as Jim Roach and Justin Boney had their own private war going on for the third spot until Boney once again had to retire from a main event with mechanical woes. By the halfway point, with Boney out of the mix, Hibner, Blackburn, and Roach continued jockeying for position with Blackburn actually slipping back to third position at one point before ultimately re-taking the lead and sailing on to yet another big-money win, something he has grown quite accustomed to over the past couple of years at C.M.S. Blackburn thanked his crew, family and sponsors in victory lane and also shed light on the fact that he broke something in the left rear of the car but was still able to go on to the victory. By race end, Lone Jack modified ace Chad Lyle had moved into the picture by driving his Mick Lamb-sponsored race machine all the way to second spot after starting 11th. Lee Hibner finished where he started in third, Jim Roach came home in 4th and Kansas City veteran Bobby Layne brought his ride home in fifth.

Picking up right where he left off from the week before, Brett Rollert of Smithville took his KB Painting, KC Gutter Tech, Buzzard Racing Engines, National Agents Alliance-sponsored Limited Late Model to victory lane for the second consecutive week. After never having won a feature event, Rollert is now on a roll with his second-ever feature win and just behind Owen Evinger in the overall point standings. Evinger tried to keep pace with Rollert in the early going but was never able to challenge for the lead. Third position starter Walt Imhoff of Jamestown actually moved around Evinger in the late stages of the race and went on to finish second. Evinger finished third with Knob Noster’s Shawn Williams fourth, and Higginsville’s Derek Nevels in fifth at the line. Rollert also picked up the heat race win over Evinger and Imhoff.

In the 305 Sprint Car main event it was the battle of the teenagers as the winningest driver at C.M.S. this year Josh Fisher of Smithton battled with another young gun, Austin Alumbaugh of Higginsville for the feature victory. Just the same as earlier in the evening, Fisher was able to hold his lead over Alumbaugh for the duration of the race and take his Fisher’s Concrete, Little Big Horn Cattle Co, R&C Adventures, TCI Tire Center Inc., Smart Growth Industries, Cock’s Fabrication, Charlie’s Taxidermy, Ray’s Custom Butchering and Bell Weld-sponsored sprinter to victory lane for the third time out of four races this year! Zach Goulden of Kansas City, Mike White of LaMonte and Ryan Schlender of Sedalia rounded out the top five.

Wayne Stevens of Norborne picked up both the heat race and feature race wins in his #6 B-modified. This young and growing class is a stepping stone for those drivers wishing to get the feel of a ‘Mighty’ Modified before possibly moving on to that class one day. Stevens, also a repeat winner this year at C.M.S. took the win over birthday boy Greg Marrant, Tony Nelson and John Ake.

Twenty Street Stocks signed in to compete for the Contingency Connection-sponsored bonus money put up for grabs this week. C.M.S. is one of only 60 tracks in the nation offering this program to its drivers. Each Contingency Connection-affiliated race track will have upwards of 100,000 dollars in NATIONAL contingency awards on the line during the 2006 race season. Three heat races were competed to fill out the feature event starting field with Holden’s Bobby Raybourn, Raytown’s Brett Nail and Warrensburg’s Chad Eickleberry picking up the wins. For the 15-lap feature event it was Raybourn starting on pole position alongside Nail, who grabbed the early lead. Eickleberry, Nathan Himes and 7th-starting Marc Carter quickly gave pursuit to Nail and the rest of the front runners. By the midway point of the race, Warrensburg’s Marc Carter had raced his way to the front by maneuvering his way through lapped traffic and moving past Nail, who spun coming off of turn four while leading and ultimately bringing out a mid-race caution flag. After the restart, it was last week’s main event winner Jay Lyle who was on the move as he quickly made his way to the front of the pack. Lyle, who started all the way back in 13th spot methodically made his way to the front by picking off competitors on nearly every lap. As Carter went on to take yet another feature win in his Ace Carwash, Heating & Cooling Specialist, Fan Club-sponsored Street Stock, Lyle was able to make a last-lap pass on Nathan Himes for second spot. Himes was third, Raybourn held on for fourth, Eickleberry fifth and Tammy Korff came home in sixth at the line.

Join us next week as once again the Contingency Connection will offer up bonus awards for the C.M.S. drivers. All the classes will be on hand including the ‘Mighty’ Modifieds, Street Stocks, 305 Sprints, Limited Late Models and B-modifieds.
