The Gateway Jr. Drags Racing Season concluded with great racing and the crowning of three new Gateway Track Champions.
Tommy Heaney Jr. won the Gateway Jr. Dragster Track Championship in Gateway’s 8-9 year old class in his first year of competition. Heaney’s championship year included 2 wins in 4 final round appearances. Heaney entered the last race of the season with a healthy points lead, and clinched the championship when 2007 NHRA Eastern Conference Jr. Dragster Champion “Lil Sassy” Morgan Keyser was defeated in the second round of competition. Keyser finished second in points followed by eventual event winner Drew Earley. Blake Bloemker, three-time finalist and event runner up finished fourth in points.
Austin Vaughn needed many cards to play in his favor in order to win his first track championship. Vaughn needed Kelsey Beimfohr, who lead the points most of the season, and Jeff Campete, both event winners in 2007 to be defeated in the early rounds of the season finale. And finally Vaughn had to win. Well the cards started to fall for Vaughn as Kelsey Beimfohr was defeated in the first round, and Jeff Campete was eliminated in the second. That led to a match up in the final round between Austin Vaughn, and two-time Gateway Track Champion Jacob Blumenstein. Blumenstein also needed Beimfohr and Campete to have early exits to the event. So the final round matchup ended up being for the 2007 Gateway Track Championship. Vaughn emerged victorious in the matchup and claimed his first Gateway Track Championship. 2005 NHRA Division 3 Champion Kelsey Beimfohr finished second, with Blumenstein and Campete rounding out the top 4.
Kegan Hagedorn rounded out his year to remember with his first Gateway Jr. Dragster Track Championship. Hagedorn’s year included one win and three semi-final appearances in Gateway’s ultra competitive 13 and up class. Hagedorn clinched his first championship with a quarter final appearance in the season finale. Cory Schollman was the event winner and jumped to sixth in Gateway Points. Event Runner up Brittney Pour moved up to second in the year end standings followed by 2006 NHRA Division 3 Champion Austin Suhre and Carly “the bug” Bryant.
Gateway would like to congratulate Tommy Heaney Jr., Austin Vaughn, and Kegan Hagedorn for their first Gateway Track Championships, and also thank all the racers, families, and supporters of the 2007 Gateway Jr. Drag Racing Program.
