Steve Jones and Ben Faircloth Take NLMS Checkers in ‘Lumber Unlimited 100’ Weekend
(Brunswick, Georgia) Golden Isles Speedway played
host to the National Late Model Series (NLMS) with a two-day stop by the sanctioning body at the newly configured four-tenths mile clay oval and when the weekend concluded, there were two new first-time winners on the NLMS tour as Steve Jones of Milan, Georgia and Ben Faircloth of Swainsboro each took their turns in victory lane during the racing filled weekend. Mother Nature tried to wash out the first day of racing at Golden Isles Speedway in the Labor Day weekend special but persistence paid off for the officials and racers at the coastal Georgia racing facility as veteran Steve Jones claimed the three-thousand dollar winner’s share on night one.
Jones took the lead on lap ten of the fifty-lap main event and was able to endure a dozen caution periods and late race charges from a handful of competitors to take the checkered flag. Tyler Ivey, the young gun from Tallahassee, Florida made a dynamic move on the last lap to come home in second, followed by Jacksonville’s Johnny Collins in third, with Bo Allen and Mark Whitner rounding out the top-five. Saturday night’s NLMS action saw Whitener of Middleburg, Florida earn the pole award as the fastest twelve qualifiers were locked into the main event from time trials. Four fast and furious qualifying heats filled the field as twenty-six of the forty-one late models on hand made the start in the fifty-lap feature.
Whitener would lead the first seven laps until Bo Allen of Bryceville, Florida made a three-wide move for the lead on lap eight, but on the tenth lap Jones roared past Allen and Collins to take the top spot.
Jones would survive the caution periods and hold onto the lead despite stiff challenges from Allen, Collins and others to earn the win. On the final lap Allen made one last move on Jones in turn four, but slipped up the banking as Ivey and Collins threaded the needle to move past as Jones took the checkers. Although the facility was deluged with heavy afternoon thunderstorms and accumulating rainfall, the Golden Isles Speedway owners stuck to their guns and prepared the racetrack so that all of the drivers and fans who had traveled to the event could enjoy the night of action as scheduled.
The second day of action got under way on Sunday evening as the field of NLMS entries grew to forty-six competitors. Darrell Padgett captured the pole award with a lap of 17.041 seconds as the top-twelve qualifiers transferred to the main event via time trials. Brad Comer, Phillip Cobb, Johnny Collins and Brandon Dewitt would each win their respective qualifying heat races with the top-three finishers in each preliminary race earning a starting spot in the fifty lap main event. Padgett would take the lead as the green flag waved and hold onto the top spot for the first nine circuits around the four-tenths mile oval until Ben Faircloth of Swainsboro, Georgia made his move to the front of the field on lap ten. During the first half of the race Faircloth was engaged in an intense scramble for the lead with Padgett, Johnny Collins, Jimmy Lee Davis, Brad Comer and the leader’s brother Jeremy Faircloth. The race was plagued by fifteen caution periods with the final yellow flag on lap thirty-eight being the most significant of the night when a nine car pileup occurred in turn one.
The incident was triggered when Skip Pannell got into Tyler Ivey as cars piled into one another with Bo Allen’s machine barrel rolling over the car of Gene Ross. None of the drivers were injured and remarkably, most of the cars were able to continue once the melee was cleared from the track.
On the final restart Faircloth was able to pull away and roar to his first career NLMS sanctioned victory earning three thousand dollars for his winning efforts. Faircloth’s run came in a Brian Lucas prepared CJ Rayburn racecar powered by an Xtreme Motorsports racing engine for the team owned by Danny and Karen Faircloth. It was a family affair as brothers Ben and Jeremy Faircloth took the first two spots in the finishing order. Johnny Collins rumbled through the field from the fifteenth starting spot to take third place as Brad Comer crossed the stripe in fourth. Saturday night’s winner Steve Jones rounded out the top-five in the finishing order with sixth through tenth going to Darrell Padgett, Brandon Cameron, Brett Carlton, Doodle Pipkin and Phillip Cobb, respectively.
In the Shark Chassis Open Wheel Modified action it was Ronnie Chance of Jacksonville, Florida taking the win in the twenty-five lap main event sponsored by Southeast Motorsports. Tallahassee young gun Tyler Ivey scored a runner-up finish with Joey Myers, Donnie Hall and P.J. Wiggins rounding out the top-five. Kyle Van Sickle scored his second straight win at Golden Isles in Limited Sportsman action with Tim Dixon,Marty Kelly, Curtis Rogers and David Tyrell all finishing in the top-five. David Tyrell won the Hobby Stock feature as Drew Smith took the checkered flag in the Super Street main event with Randy Barnhart the winner in Pure Stock action.
