ATTENTION ALL UMP MODIFIED DRIVERS:

As of July 1st, 2004 the Gremlin Roof will no longer
be allowed at any UMP race tracks.

After seeing the amount of rake on a few of those gremlin bodied mods, I seen it coming....lol

IT DOESN'T SUPRISE ME THEY ARE DOING THIS. THEY DO NO ALLOW SPOILERS, AND THE GREMLIN ROOFS HAVE WHAT COULD BE CONSIDERED A SPOILER ON THE BACK. WEATHER YOU WANT TO BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THEY CAN HELP WITH DOWNFORCE.

!

And I thought NASCAR was bad with their one body theory......LOL

It is a factory styled part, they should leave this "link to the past" alone. At least it is styled after an actual car.

Now, I am in NO WAY a fan of the Gremlin roofs, but why change a stupid rule like this in the middle of the racing season? I could understand AFTER this season,..but hey! Lets make the local racer spend MORE money.

so UMP gonna foot the sheet metal bill for all these guys to change this??? stupid change......... its been in the rules that you can have that body style how long? A LONG TIME!!! and so a few fast guys have it this year and everyone starts bi**hin..... yea exactly c.j. spending more money.... what happened to tryin to help the cost of the sport go down??????

my 2 cents.... Joe

They must be talking about the new Pierce cars. Those are the ones that have that body style. I have not seen Harrison's car so I can't compare his to Dean Hoffman's and Bobby Bittle's that have that roof style.
What caused that change?
Sounds like a slap at Bob Pierce and his Modified cars.

That little rise at the back does nothing to improve the handling of the car on short tracks, although there might be a touch of added downforce on the bigger tracks at higher speeds. I would think that that would be more than offset by the additional drag, as well as actually creating a bigger hole in the air for following cars to draft in.

I agree with Jpugh, this looks political, nothing to do with performance.

I MYSELF DON'T THINK THERE IS ANY HANDLING BENEFIT TO THOSE ROOF EITHER ON THE STL AREA TRACKS. I55 WOULD BE THE ONLY POSSIBILTY.

I THINK OUTLAWING THEM IS A STUPID DECISION. DONE RIGHT THEY DON'T LOOK TOO BAD. THEY GIVE THE CARS A LITTLE CHARACTER. I MYSELF WISH THEY WOULD ALLOW THE UMP MODS TO HAVE SPOILERS. THEY WAY THE BODY RULES ARE NOW, 90% OF THE MODS LOOK THE SAME. GIVE THE GUYS A LITTLE MORE FLEXABILTY TO INDIVIDUALIZE THEIR CAR....J/M/O

UMP mods are not allowed to run spoilers, and unfortunately, because of a couple of people's taking advantage of a rule loophole that someone found, the Gremlin roof is being banned. UMP drawing shows maximum length of rise being 6" with a maximum height of rise being 2". Unfortunately, they never specify a minimum length of rise.

I think if UMP would simply specify a minimum length of rise, it could be acceptable. 4" minimum sounds reasonable, and probably easier to modify the body to fit it.

If you don't think the turnup helps try this. Roll down your window on your passenger car and stick your hand out flat then start angling your hand up like a spoiler. At 60 mph you can't hardly hold your hand straight out as the downforce tries to pull it down. So what would the width of a roof do to downforce?

The Gremlin spoiler is actually a wickerbill type device as it mounted on top rear of a aero type device. (roof) It causes the air going underneath the roof to speedup to meet the deflected air going over the roof causing more suction or downforce. Not as good as say a sprint car wing as the roof is flat on bottom but there is still downforce there. As with any wing on a race car the top isn't that important it's how fast you can get the underneath air to speed up that causes the downforce.
