Grooving tires

I'm looking for some ideas on what what works best when racing on a dirt track that has turned hard and dusty.
What tire/compound works on dust?
Does grooving a slick tire help?

Ron

ron... slick tires usually dont have enough rubber to put any decent grooves on. dry slick tracks tend to be hard on tires, so a harder tire that has been 'siped' is best. the cuts tend to keep it cooler.wide grooves are a no-no.

Most Chevy people would know that. :) Get your truck back yet? Junkyards are filled with Ford trucks, just go get a new dash. Sheesh

NO TRUCK YET!!!
Not going to comment on the truck subject right now.

Art,
We raced at CCQMA (Taylorville) last Sunday to get ready for their Regional this weekend. It was very dusty and bumpy in the turns.
Looking at the regular dirt (dust) racers there, most had grooved slicks on the rear. The width of the groove was fairly wide for a Quarter Midget tire. Some were a 1/4" wide. I noticed several different patterns. Some were blocks, some grooves were across, and some were around the tread.
I was kinda wondering what compound the dirt Karting guys use and what they do to their tires when the track turns hard and dusty.

Are you guys going to the CCQMA Regional this weekend?
I'd bet Jimmy would have a great time!

the wider the groove, usually for a wetter track. narrow grooves tend to clog when the track is reallywet/ heavy. you could put several grooves parallel to the edge across the tire, and just a few crossways,if you want. do not take the gooves straight across, but angle them back toward the outer edge, to make the cross grooves 90 degrees to track surface when the car is sliding thru the corners. is the truck a sore subject? not gonna go to any regionals (yet) costs too much to put the engine back together. not working as of yet. good luck.

Are you talking about Karts?? Where do you race at?? With fall closing in fast,a dry dusty track won't be much of a problem.

reasonable grooves with every other block sipe works really well.dont cut to big of grooves or it will not build any heat, and dont cut to small cause it will rip the blocks off...remember tires win races on dirt!

Where do you race 1/4 midgets on dirt at ?? The only place I know of near hear is Greenville, and I believe that track is cement.

There are 5 tracks in our region, which is "Region 5".
I-70 QMA - Greenville, is the only concrete track, the rest are dirt.
MSQMRA - Bunker Hill IL - dirt
CCQMA - Taylorville IL - dirt
ALQMA - Lincoln IL - dirt
THQMA - Terre Haute IN - dirt

We have a great time racing on concrete or dirt, but we
prefer pavement/concrete.
