LaSalle, IL - Saturday night Tim Hamburg became the first Late Model driver in the 2005 season to make a second visit to victory lane at LaSalle Speedway. The father of two claimed his first win at the end of May and has been on a mission for the follow up. Father’s Day weekend was just an added bonus for the driver who hails out of Dixon.

The feature’s starting grid held Hamburg on the pole with LaSalle’s Mike Glynn next to him as the fastest qualifier Skip Martin of McHenry and former track champ Frank Reaber of Bensenville lined up in the second row.

When the action went green, Hamburg used his inside start to grab the low line as Glynn tried a higher groove. The two raced side by side until the end of the first lap when Hamburg took over for the first and final time of the twenty-five lap main.

By the end of lap three, the race was not for the lead but for second as Martin moved under Glynn taking the duo into a door to door combat. One lap later, Glynn succumbed to Martin’s pursuit as West Chicago’s Jay Fiene followed in fourth. While the top four leaders all moved to the bottom of the track, Reaber was trying the high ground to make his mark.

During Lap 8, Reaber’s high run had brought him up to fourth and seemed to be helping him move forward until a caution slowed the action. After the green dropped, Reaber found himself too high over the cushion’s rough turf and dropped back quickly to sixth behind Fiene and Kirkland’s Tom Markham.

When the fifteenth lap was scored it was clear that Hamburg was able to outdistance himself from the pack leaving Martin in second ahead of Glynn, Fiene and Reaber who still was trying to use the high line to knock off positions. Four laps later, Hamburg was working his way through lapped traffic until the yellow slowed the momentum.

As the flagman signaled three to go, Reaber and Fiene were fighting for fourth. With one remaining lap still un-scored, Glynn found the opportunity he needed to steal back second from Martin to chase Hamburg.

When the checkers flew from the flagstand Hamburg collected it as Glynn, Martin, Fiene, Reaber, Markham, Granville’s Darin Furar, Wyanet’s Jason Jaggers, Mike Provenzano, and Bryan Byers crossed the line after him.

In earlier Heat action Provenzano narrowly held off Glynn for the win with Reaber and Jaggers following. Hamburg took home the second Heat as Fiene, Martin and Markham completed the top four finishers. Martin’s fastest qualifying lap was an impressive time of 12.669.

Tonica’s Scott Schmitt was the top survivor for the Midwestern Sportsman division Special. There wasn’t a tribal counsel or anyone being voted off but it became a game to see who would be left driving at the end of the nights competition.

Eight competitors signed in for their first special of the season with Scott taking home the top honors for the two races the class participated in. Both events hosted too much contact and too many drivers out of contention. During the Heat only three were left to cross the finish line.

For the fifteen lap feature, Scott started on the pole and wasted little time taking command. At the finish it was Scott uncontested over Streator’s Bobby Morgan, Aaron Schmitt also of Tonica, Jake Patterson, Tina Soberi, Mike Amerrano and Andy Atkinson.

Nineteen drivers lined up for the Midwestern Late Model’s feature race with David Smith and Shane Hill of Streator on the first row of the grid. Tonica’s Eric Dauber and Johnny Heath were in row two over TJ Markham and Keith Piano.

Smith and Hill battled early with Smith taking the point. A caution during the tenth lap out brought everyone back together with Smith leading over Hill, Heath, Ralph Markham, TJ, Dauber, Eric Rebholz and Mick Miller.

Seven laps following, Smith now had TJ to contend with on his back bumper. Several laps later TJ was forced to move his groove higher as lapped traffic was beginning to become a factor while the two distanced themselves from their competition.

With two to go, it looked like TJ had enough to give Smith a run but the lapped traffic was already using his favored line. At the finish line, it was Smith coming home with the win as TJ took second over Heath and Dauber. Piano, who had fallen back to tenth, finished fifth after an impressive run to the front. Hill crossed in sixth ahead of Ralph, Brian Ray, Miller and Rebholz.

Ralph posted the quickest lap during qualifying. Dan Patnoe won the first Heat race ahead of Rob Piper, Dave Miller and Wally Forsythe. Rebholz outran Heath, TJ and Hill to collect the second Heat race win.

Lockport’s Tom Otrembiak made a clean sweep of the Street Stock division. He won both his Heat and Feature races.

Tom Legner finished second in the main event over Al Gray of Ottawa, Gary Schmitt, Nick Sell of Oglesby, Eric Legner, Robert Schlappi, John Peterson, Jimmy Kirkpatrick, Joe Jelinek and Bill Clemmons.

Gray won the second Heat race.
