LaSalle, IL - Saturday evening Tim Hamburg drove his way back to victory lane for the second time of the LaSalle Speedway’s 2004 racing season. The Dixon native powered his way back with a Late Model win after a relaxing week long vacation and .

Twenty one cars qualified for the nights activities with only nineteen still in race ready condition when the feature line up hit the track. At the helm was the Dash victor and former track champion Frank Reaber of Bensenville next to Mike Mataragas on the outside. Second row consisted of Elmhurst’s Jim Partipilo and Bret Sievert over Hamburg and McHenry’s Skip Martin.

Once the green was flying, Mataragas the fastest qualifier was heading up the field. For the first four laps he continued to lead with Reaber, Sievert, Partipilo and Martin behind him. As Mataragas powered his way around the highside he found himself a little too far over the cushion and the rougher ground slowed his drive. Reaber capitalized on his mistake and quickly grabbed the lead away.

For the next six laps, Reaber led Mataragas as Hamburg was making his way up to third in turn leaving Partipilo in a solid fourth place run over Garrett Slager. On Lap 13, a yellow was signaled for a stopped Sievert who quickly headed to the pit area but back to the field before the next lap began.

Two laps later, Mataragas ended his convincing run as smoke began to come out of the rear end and it broke just as he entered turn four sending him hard into the unforgiving concrete retaining wall.

With Mataragas out of contention the single file restart had Reaber on the pole over Hamburg, Partipilo, West Chicago’s Jay Fiene, Slager, Bill Rezutek, Martin, Tom Newquist and Rich Bell.

As soon as the pace began again a two wide battle between Reaber and Hamburg was well underway for first with Partipilo and Fiene side by side for third. Lap 15 is when Hamburg made his final run for the lead and took over as Reaber attempted a lower line to get it back while Fiene moved into third.

At the finish line, Hamburg was way out front with Reaber second in front of Fiene, Slager, Martin and Sievert. Tonica’s Ryan Dauber finished his night seventh in his brother Eric’s Midwestern Late Model car after breaking his in an earlier race. Bell crossed the line eighth over Newquist, Tim Brach and Bill Rezutek.

Reaber outran the fastest qualifiers to win the Dash in front of Dauber, Partipilo and Mataragas. Newquist took home the first Heat race win with Jason Jaggers, Dave Lilja and Fiene behind him. Slager won the fast Heat as Martin, Reaber and Sievert finished the top four positions.

Twenty Midwestern Late Model drivers qualified with Cody Sommer posting the fastest lap with a time of 14.043. When the feature time came a bright colored rainbow was the backdrop for the twenty five lap event.

At the head of the grid sat Dan Thryselius next to Doug Newlin. As soon as the flagman gave the go ahead Thryselius was out front with Eric Rebholz putting the pressure on him from a low groove run. Rebholz stole the lead on the backstretch of Lap 3 heading up Thryselius, Ralph Markham of Maple Park, Eric Dauber, John Piccatto, and Travis Rokey.

The next lap scored Thryselius ended his second place run in the infield.

During Lap 8, Rebholz lost the lead on the same part of the track he had acquired it. The backstretch is where Dauber made his final move collecting the lead. Once out front Dauber immediately distanced himself from the pack.

A yellow on Lap 17 brought the field back together for a single file restart with Dauber over Markham who was now in second, Rebholz third, Piccatto fourth and Brian Ray fifth. Dauber once again took off to a nice lead as Markham worked the bottom to reel him in.

With one to go, Markham was working hard but a flat tire scrapped any chance at catching the leader. At the checkers Dauber was first as Rebholz took second. Picatto passed up Markham for third.

Markham battled to finish fourth with no remaining tire left on the rim as sparks flew where a tire had been. Mick Miller claimed fifth ahead of Sommer, Ray, Streator’s Shane Hill, Jerry Vance and Rokey.

Jilbert and Markham won their Heat races.

Next Saturday night the LaSalle Speedway will host its second televised Xtreme DirtCar Series Stacker 2 sponsored $10,000 to win Late Model special.
