Hamilton will not drive for Petree

Hamilton will not take one race deal: Andy Petree will soon announce a sponsor for a one-race deal for the Daytona 500, but has yet to find a driver. It probably won't be his former driver, Bobby Hamilton, even though Hamilton has yet to find a ride for 2003. Hamilton told The Sporting News he would not risk a one-race ride at Daytona, ''because you're at everyone else's mercy. If one guy makes a mistake, it can take out the entire field. That doesn't happen at places like Charlotte or Atlanta.'' Hamilton appears destined to compete in the Craftsman Truck Series this season. He said earlier he would not accept a ''non-competitive'' ride in Winston Cup.(Tennessean)(1-2-2003)

I AM NOT A BOBBY HAMILTON FAN, BUT I CAN RESPECT HIS STAND. I KNOW I WOULD PREFER TO RACE IN THE NCTS, AND BE COMPETITIVE AND WIN RACES, RATHER THAN FLOUNDER AROUND IN WINSTON CUP STRUGGLING TO GET INTO THE TOP 20.

I THINK IT WOULD INCREASE HIS ODDS OF LANDING A COMPETITIVE RIDE AGAIN DOING IT THIS WAY.

Driver Update

I've been told the driver will not be Mike Wallace or Geoffrey Bodine and an announcement should be made soon on the driver

Update:

Newt Moore has signed on with Bobby Hamilton Racing and will be crew chief for one of Hamilton's three truck teams. It's a perfect fit for Moore, 40, who is from Nashville. Hamilton's operation is nearby in Mount Juliet, Tenn. . . .

Bobby Hamilton takes aim at Truck title

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Former Winston Cup driver Bobby Hamilton will take a run at winning the NASCAR Truck series championship in 2003.
Hamilton, who has fielded teams in the series and has driven in selected races in recent years, announced Tuesday he has acquired sponsorship from Square D, which sponsored Hamilton at Andy Petree Racing the past two seasons. Hamilton will compete in the series in his No. 4 Dodge.

"This just makes sense for me," Hamilton said. "I've worked with Square D for the past two years and we have a tremendous relationship.

"When they talked about coming on board as a sponsor of our truck, I told them without hesitation, 'If you sponsor it, I will drive it.' "

Hamilton had decided late last season that he would leave the Petree team when Petree was discussing a possible merger with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. The driver never received what he called a "credible" offer to return to Cup, so he made the change this season to the Truck series.

Newt Moore, who served as Winston Cup driver Ken Schrader's crew chief last season, will take over that role with Hamilton.

The 45-year old native of Nashville, Tenn., established Bobby Hamilton Racing four years ago. His teams have won nine times and won 15 poles. They have also accumulated 37 top-five and 74 top-10 finishes.

"I'm working hard to establish a top-notch truck program at Bobby Hamilton Racing," Hamilton said. "It's the future for me and my family.

"It's a first-class operation. The racing program they've built over the years is tremendous. I hope our team can help them continue to grow in 2003."

Hamilton is focused on winning the championship and should be a preseason favorite to win the title.

In 24 career starts, he has two wins, three poles, five top-five and eight top-10 finishes.

UPDATE:

Hearing that Square D will be sponsoring Bobby Hamilton for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series 2003 season. The #4 Dodge truck will sport Square D's brand logo as well as a commemorative logo for the 100-year anniversary.
