Inside Line Promotions - LAWTON, Okla. (July 23, 2014) - Brandon Hanks earned his best-career finish at two tracks in Oklahoma last weekend with a pair of seventh-place results.
Hanks kicked off the ASCS Sooner Region doubleheader on Friday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, where he finished in the same position that he started - third. That lined him up 11[sup]th[/sup] for the main event.
"We were good, but it was really hard to pass," he said. "It was around the bottom and rough. I'm glad we survived the race. It stayed hooked up all night long. When the ASCS National Tour was there for the Speedweek deal earlier this season it got more hooked up throughout the night. On Friday night it stayed the same. It never went away. You had to get really, really aggressive to pass somebody or really brave to pass somebody on the outside."
Hanks picked up a handful of positions during the main event to record his 10[sup]th[/sup] top 10 of the season.
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Lawton Speedway, where Hanks powered from his front row outside starting position to capture his first career heat race win at the track.
That earned him a trip into the feature redraw where he pulled the second-highest number - seven - in the random draw to line up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.
"We had the car a little too free," he said. "I struggled trying to pass people. The track was pretty slick as it was and there was a little moisture on the bottom. We were all fighting for it in turn one. We were holding our own trying to stay in the same spot. I think we finished where we needed to."
Hanks maintained a top 10 throughout the feature before ending in seventh place for the second straight night.
"I'm pleased with the weekend," he said. "Finishing in the top 10 is an accomplishment."
Hanks is set to make his season debut at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, this Saturday. It will be his third career trip to the famed half-mile oval.
"I feel like I'm more prepared this year than I was last year," he said. "I feel like I'm going back with a better setup and I'm going back as a whole better driver."
