LaSalle, IL - Three complete restarts slowed the action but couldn’t shake Jeff Hartzell as he charged for the lead and refused to give it up. The Genoa drivers strong run earned him the Midwestern Sportsman Spectacular at LaSalle Speedway Saturday night.

When the seventeen contenders lined up for feature time, it was Hartzell at the head of the grid with Scott Cimei as his front row partner. Behind the pair Keith Piano and Sharon Schlappi rolled up to the back bumper in front of Ben Hamburg and Tina Soberri.

Once the field got a rhythm going, Hartzell took charge and began to dodge lapped traffic from a high line with Cimei, Duane McCarville and Schlappi in tow.

During Lap 13, Hartzell found himself stuck behind two cars vying for their own position but a yellow gave him a clean restart at the helm without the lapped challengers.

With only one remaining lap, Hartzell was a sure bet as Cimei and McCarville were left to duke it out for second. The battle didn’t end until the finish line where Cimei narrowly held back McCarville for second.

Schlappi finished fourth over Brian Claudnic, Soberri, Darryl Grandys, Bob Morgan, Jake Paterson, Dan Goodhand, BJ Mires, Aaron Schmidt, Fleety Beltz, Scott Hauge, Bill Satek, BJ Grabow and Piano.

Hartzell won the earlier Dash while Satek and Claudnic captured their Heat wins.

Twenty Late Models signed in to compete for the evenings events. Tonica’s Ryan Dauber traveled the fastest qualifying lap with a time of 13.336.

West Chicago’s Jay Fiene continued his impressive season with a Dash and Heat win positioning himself on the pole for the twenty five lap feature. Next to him, was Dixon’s Tim Hamburg in front of Frank Reaber and Dauber.

Once under green, Hamburg took off and never left the leadership position. His only competition came from Fiene who, at times, would pull up to his back bumper but trailed him lap after lap.

Reaber followed in third for the entire event as Dauber and Jim Partipilo traded the fourth place running spot around lap seventeen.

After Hamburg collected the checkers it was Fiene in second and Reaber forced to third after being held up by a lapped car. Partipilo earned fourth in front of Dauber, Darin Furar, Bret Seivert, Jason Jaggers, Dan Source and Garrett Slager. Mike Glynn finished eleventh over Tom Newquist, Larry Legrand, Tom Markham and Tim Brach.

Tonica’s Eric Dauber rocked the Midwestern Late Model class to take in his second victory in a row. Moving up through the field is never as easy as it looks but for Dauber he charged into second from a ninth place start by the tenth lap scored.

For much of the race, Ben Hamburg held the point from his pole start with Eric and Reno Markham in combat for second. On Lap 16, Ben and Reno tangled leaving just the opening Eric had been watching for.

Once Eric gained the lead, he held on to make his way to victory circle leaving Reno runner up over Ben, Shane Hill, Tony Coglianese, Ralph Markham, Wally Forsythe, John Johnson, Eric Rebholz and Butch Hampson.

Scott Schmitt continued his winning ways in the Street Stock division after holding back Charles Herhold for the win. Gary Schmitt finished third in front of Chuck Leason, Tom Legner, Eric Legner, John Peterson, Nick Sell, Jerry Legner and Al Gray.
