BELLEVILLE, IL (Sunday June 13, 2004):
Petersburg, Illinois Mike Hess took over the lead on lap two and dominated the 25 lap M.A.R.A midget car main event at the Belle-Clair Speedway Sunday night. Joey Montgomery, Greg Lueckert, Derek Rossio, and Justin Allgaier rounded out the top five.
J.C. Bland started on the pole and paced lap one until Hess got by on the outside on lap two. Hess settled in on the bottom while Derek Rossio and Rich Camfield gave chase on the outside. Camfield misjudged turn one and brought out the red flag on lap five. Camfield was uninjured, but done for the night.
When racing resumed, Hess again headed to the bottom while Rossio and Greg Lueckert pursued. On lap seven Gary "Bubba" Altig slid high in turn three and flippe bringing out the red flag. Altig was uninjured but was unable to continue.
On the restart Hess began to build a comfortable margin, but the race for second was heating up. A battle between Rossio, Lueckert, and Montgomery lasted for several laps before Montgomery squeezed between the pair coming off of turn four. Montgomery was closing in on the leader at the end, but it would be Hess claiming the $1000 first prize.
M.A.R.A midget heat races went to Rich Camfield, J.C. Bland, Greg Lueckert, and Justin Allgaier. Mike Cray won the semi. A solid field of 28 midgets packed the pit area.
Outlaw winged 600cc micro sprints were featured as the support division. Daniel Robinson looked to be on his way to his first main event win at Belle-Clair until spiining out in turn two on the last lap. Derek O'dell, who pressured Robinson for most of the race, led the lap that counted and claimed the $500 victory. Chad Kendall, Tony Roney, Dereck King, and Adam Holder rounded out the top five. A huge field of 55 micros were in competition.
Heat races in the micros went to Adam Holder, Christopher Massey, Blake Buchholz, Derek O'dell, and David Barrett. The two semis went to Casey Barnhouse and Kara King.
M.A.R.A. midget/micro racing returns to Belle-Clair Speedway Sunday night July 11th for the Shannon Finley Memorial. This will be the second event in the Gateway Open Wheel Racing Series sponsored by Hoosier Tire Midwest
