(Macon, IL) All classes outside of the Chevrolet Late Models were running at Macon Speedway Saturday night as the rains avoided the world’s fastest one-fifth mile track. Threatening weather kept some fans from heading down to the track but it didn’t stop the Pro Hornet drivers from trying for the $500 first-place prize.

Bruce Dulgar, the current points leader and defending track champion in the Pro Hornets division, had a great first heat with an eight-lap heat win. He led all eight laps and held off a fast Fred Reed to take the checkered flag.
Ray Goodall won the Pro Hornets feature on September 6th and was trying to build momentum into the Hornet World Championship and he would do so with a heat win.

Also, in the Pro Hornets, Matt Musgrave won heat three for his first checkered flag at Macon Speedway in his first visit.

In the feature events, the BARBECK Modifieds went to Dave Crawley, Jr., who picked up his sixth feature of 2008. He led from wire-to-wire but didn’t have it easy as Jim Leka, driving a different car than his Prairieland Towing no. 40, cruised through his heat and finished second to lock up his fifth consecutive BARBECK Modifieds track championship.

In the Best Fan in the Stands promotion, Roger Drake finished ninth to give him the $100 bonus and the right to pick a fan from the stands to collect $100, as well. He selected Howard Heyland, a huge reason why Drake is racing in 2008.

For the ninth time this season, Steve Ewing did it again. After finishing second to Dennis Vandermeersch in the Street Stock Championship feature race on September 6th, Ewing came back to claim victory after taking the lead from Troy Dodson and he was uncontested from then. Larry Russell, Jr., ended up taking second by a nose over multi-time Street Stock champion Mike Pickering.

In the Amateur Hornet feature, Jeff Gill looked close to unstoppable, coming from the third row inside to overtake Heidi Hames and lead the rest of the way of the 15-lap feature. Beau’s Auto Body and Hankins racing contributed awards and prizes for the first, second and third place finishers. Gill took the top spot for his fifth feature. Mike Morse came from behind to grab second from Hames, who finished third.

The Hogan Grain & Equipment Sportsman feature was a battle of who could last the longest and Norm Wood ended up being that driver. With the field starting 13 cars, only six remained when the checkered flag was in the air.

For Wood, it was his third feature of the season and second in the last three weeks. Stonington’s Jeff Graham celebrated in turn one with a burnout after clinching the track championship.

After the final lap of the Sportsman feature, the rains started falling but with luck on the side of the racers and fans, the rain subsided and the final event of the evening took the track. The starting field consisted of 24 cars and all 24 were on the track vying for the top prize of $500.

As the race began, it was an early competition between points leader and defending champion Bruce Dulgar and defending feature winner Ray Goodall. As the laps counted and the cars dropped out, Fred Reed ended up taking control of the race and led the majority of the event. As the checkered flag flew for the final time in the 2008 points chase, Fred Reed had taken his second Pro Hornet feature with Goodall in second, Dulgar in third and Michael Martin finishing in the fourth place position.

Bruce Dulgar celebrated his second Hornet track championship with a burnout of his own at the front stretch in front of his fans.

Following a week off, Macon Speedway will reopen its gates for the finale of the 2008 racing season. The O’Reilly’s POWRi Midgets and Micros will come to Macon Speedway to put on one last open wheel show. BARBECK Modifieds, Street Stocks and Hornets are also on the schedule for the final night of the racing season.

Macon Speedway is located 9 miles south of Decatur, IL on US 51 then .6 miles west on Andrews Street, then south on Wiles.
