Republic's Brad Looney has been as hot as the weather lately and he kept his regular show winning streak in tact as he started from the front row and drove away with the LateModel feature Sat night at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway in leading all 25 laps.
The real battle was for the runner up spot as Darrell Mooneyham, Leroy Johnson, Tim Brown, and Dustin Mooneyham were so tight you could throw a blanket around that battle. While Looney had checked out,Johnson kept the pressure on Mooneyham for the runner-up honors as the duo ran door to door for several laps with Tim Brown riding the top cushion right behind this battle. As the feature stayed clean and green,Johnson Finnaly shot ahead of Darrell to take the runner-up spot on lap 21.A wild finish as the checkered flags were about to wave saw 2002 Bolivar champ Chris Comer ignite his motor while challanging to get inside the top 5 and Dustin mooneyham would spin in turn 4 taking him out of a top 5 run.At the stripe it was Looney with a comfortable lead followed by Johnson,Darrell Mooneham,Tim Brown, and Tony Jackson Jr at the end."Our luck and car preparation has been good lately," quoted Looney."This hot streak really started about the time the Mars Series was in the area in July and we lead both the races at Bolivar and Lebanon. Those 2 races really got my confidence up and showed that I could run with those drivers.I can't wait until they come in the area again in 2 weeks as I believe I might have something for them."
It took 4 times to get the Modified feature underway and those early red flags would eliminate several top contenders including Eric Lampe,Terry Kirk, and Jason Meadors. On the start, veteran Bill Gilliam jumped from the front row to take the early lead as former track champ Rex Merritt,Steve Mulienburg and Steve Martin where putting on a battle for runner-up spots as point leader Erik Maggard was making his charge to the front. On lap 3,Maggard retired to the pits as Gilliam still set the pace.Lebanon's Jamie Ragland who was involved in the early restart was on the move from the back of the pack after starting 16th,he had moved into the top 8 on lap 5.With Gilliam still setting the pace,Merritt made the move on lap 11 to gather the lead with Mulienburg following. On lap 14,early leader Gilliam got caught up in a spin sending him to the rear.On the restart,Merritt pulled away from the field to take his first win this season at I-44 over the 20 car starting field.Following him to the line was Mulienburg,Steve Martin,Scotty Allen, and Ragland.
The SuperStock feature saw Roscoe Harris jump to the early lead with Shawn Danuser following in tow. With Harris working the low side of the speedway,Reggie Jackson found the top groove to his liking and began his charge to the front of the pack.Point leader Mike Joplin then began his run to the front while battling with Rick Brown,Doug Rich, and Larry Prewitt. On lap 5 Jackson took over the top spot as Doug Rich had made a move to contend. With Jackson running strong, the car jumped sideways on the frontstretch allowing the car of Joplin to move to the inside to take control as Prewitt and Brown followed. With Joplin staying down low,Brown found the high-side to his liking and shot from third place to first coming out of turn 2 and held off repeated challanges by Joplin in taking the win.Following the lead duo to the line was Prewitt,Jackson and early leader Roscoe Harris.
The FactoryStock feature saw Burl Woods jump to the early lead with Sonny Nicewanner following in tow.On lap 3,the red flew for Randall Sacket as his car got up on it's side in turn 3.This was only following the hard rollover he suffered 2 weeks ago,and was racing his new car tonight. On the restart,Woods pulled away as Bolivar point leader Sean Williams was making his run to the front with Chuck Pederson closely behind.Early frontrunner Josh Franklin would go by the waysdie with a blown motor on lap 13 setting up a dramatic 2 lap shootout. On the restart Williams looked to the high-sdie of leader Woods as Pederson made the low groove work strong.Coming fro the checkered,Woods survived a last surge by Williams in gathering the win followed closely by Pederson,Nicewaner, and point leader Quintin Day.
The 20 car Bomber feature saw Trent Harrison jump out to lead the early laps with Rodney Jones following closely.Back in the pack front moving cars included undeafeated Jon Mulienburg in the family station-wagon,Dusty Rhoades, last weeks winner Jeff Scroggins,Craig Lonning, and point leader Gary Klossner. On lap 4,Mulienburg stalled on the front stretch and 13 year old points runner-up Micheal Maggard was also slowing up bringing out the yellow. As both cars went to the pits and came back out starting at the rear of the field. On the restart,Harrison kept setting the pace as Jones,Lonning and now Dusty Rhoades was coming fast from the rear of the field. On lap 8,Jones made a power move to the outside of leader Harrison in turn 4 to take control with Lonning following 1 lap later.Rhoades charge to the front ended on lap 9 as he blew his motor sending him to the pits.As the checkered waved,Jones finally broke his bad luck jinx with his 1st win this season at the high-banks followed by Lonning, early pacesetter Harrison,Donnie Jackson, and Jeff Scroggins.
The Pro-4's put on a great side-by-side battle as last weeks winner Don Lacey to the early lead working the low groove and Don johnson made the pass to take charge on lap 3.1st half point champion Ken Jones returned to action this week, and had worked his way into second on lap 7.With Johnson setting the pace,Jones worked the low groove and the duo ran side-by-side all the way until the end as Johnson held on for the win by half a car length over Jones.Early leader Lacey followed the duo to the stripe.
