STORMPAY.COM DLMS CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE BACK TO SQUARE ONE THIS WEEKEND IN COLUMBUS, MS

CARTERSVILLE, GA – The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Championship battle is back to square one when the series visits Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS this Friday night for the $2,500-to-win Holley Carburetors 40 Presented By NeSmith Chevrolet, and on Saturday night for the $2,500-to-win Trak-Star Race Cars 40 Presented By NeSmith Chevrolet.

Frank Ingram of Woodstock, GA and the defending StormPay.com DLMS National champion David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN are tied for the point lead with 1,400 points apiece. After 16 races this season, “the chase” is on – not by design, but rather by necessity.

There are five, possibly six, events left on the 2007 StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Touring schedule. The two races this weekend, a two-day $5,000-to-win event at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, IN on September 21-22, a $3,000-to-win race on October 27 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL, and back to Columbus Speedway for the $3,000-to-win season finale on November 26.

Series officials said there could be an additional race added to the schedule in November, as negotiations are under way with series tracks for the additional date.

The Saturday race could pay a possible $2,750-to-win if the winning driver is piloting a Trak-Star Race Car. Event sponsor Mike Boland with Boland Performance of Cuba, AL will be putting up the $250 bonus cash. Boland, who won the last StormPay.com DLMS National Touring event at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS, will lead the Trak-Star contingent.

Ingram and Gentry will begin their battle for the championship with a clean slate, just as they were 16 races ago when the season began in January at Talladega Short Track. The “Baddest Bullring In The South” will provide a stage to begin this new title hunt that lends itself to some of the most competitive racing on the StormPay.com DLMS National Tour.

While Ingram and Gentry are knotted up at the top of the list, several drivers will be looking for good runs at Columbus Speedway in the Twin 40s this weekend to put themselves in the battle for the $20,000 out of the point fund pot at season’s end that goes to the National Champion, along with a new chassis, and a new GM Performance 604 Crate Engine.

Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs, GA is right behind Ingram and Gentry in the points chase, just 56 points behind, and Jay Blair of Angie, LA is fourth, 16 points behind Rainey. The “Angie Assassin” knows where the winner’s circle is at Columbus Speedway, as his only win so far this season came at the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval on January 28.

Ingram led most of that race, but Blair took the lead with two laps to go. Ingram will be returning to Columbus Speedway looking for the win that got away earlier this year. Since then, Ingram has collected three StormPay.com DLMS National Touring wins.

Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA is fifth in the StormPay.com DLMS National points, and is the leading Rookie of the Year candidate with two wins this season. Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA is sixth in the National points chase, and has been running at the front of the pack in his last two starts.

Chris Tays of Corinth, MS is seventh in points, and would like to collect his first win of the season in his home state. Robert Stutts of Murfreesboro, TN is eighth in the StormPay.com DLMS points and second in the Rookie of the Year points. Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA is ninth, and Jim Till of Greenville, AL rounds out the top ten in points, and is third in the RoY standings.

Also expected this weekend will be a strong continent of StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series West Region competitors. The defending StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion and current point leader Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS will lead the charge, along with his son Brandon Keeton of Toomsuba, MS.

The Keetons have an opportunity, with the ten bonus points going to StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series West Region drivers participating in the two events this weekend, to leave Columbus Speedway one-two as father and son in the West Region points chase.

Columbus Speedway regular Jamie Pickard of Columbus, MS is tied with Steve Godsey of Bedford, IN for fourth in the StormPay.com WRS West Region points. Pickard will be there to defend his home turf, and Godsey is planning on making the trip from the Hoosier State. Another top West Region contender, Terry Mosley of Gilbertown, AL is also expected.

Other top entrants expected include the 2008 StormPay Weekly Racing Series Track Champion at Magnolia Motor Speedway Tony Shelton of Steens, MS, Anthony Rushing of Kosciusko, MS, Rusty Hoge of Ooltewah, TN, Bill Flowers of Bremen, GA, and Curtis Cline of Douglasville, GA.

There will be a complete show each night for the Holley Carburetors 40 Presented By NeSmith Chevrolet on Friday night, and the Trak-Star Race Cars 40 Presented By NeSmith Chevrolet on Saturday night with Qualifying, Heat Races, and a 40-lap $2,500-to-win main event.

Columbus Speedway is located seven miles east of Columbus, MS on U.S. Highway 82. Exit at Stokes Rd exit, then go left 1.5 miles north on Pleasant Hill Road, and then right on Lacy Road. Columbus Speedway will be 3/4's of a mile on the left. For more information call Columbus Speedway at 662-241-5004, or visit the Columbus Speedway web site at www.columbusspeedway.net.
