(Warrensburg, MO) Temperatures soared into the upper 90s Saturday afternoon as fans and drivers braved the sweltering heat at Warrensburg’s own Central Missouri Speedway. Drivers competed in 15 exciting races contested throughout the evening in four divisions with 75 cars signed in for Central Auto Racing Boosters (CARB) night at the speedway.

Leading off the night’s program was the B-Modified division competing in three heat races and a 15-lap feature event with 22 cars on hand. Michael King claimed his third heat win of the year ahead of Ethan Isaacs, Chris Stout, A.J. Tice, and Paul West. In heat race number two, Bryan Montgomery won his sixth heat win of the year, this time ahead of Rusty Trimble, Jacob Ebert, Lucas Isaacs, and Mark Evinger. After several false starts for the third heat, things finally settled down and Chris Brockway drove to his sixth heat win over Bronson Combs, Troy Carlyle, Luke Smith, and Christie Thomason. The feature race started with King and Montgomery from the pole positions as King shot out to an early lead. Early on King maintained his lead over a stout field of cars with close battles by Brockway in second and Montgomery close behind in third. By lap six, Brockway was the leader as the first caution flag flew on lap seven. Ethan Isaacs, Ebert, and Combs tangled on the front stretch on the re-start with Isaacs receiving a flat tire and unable to finish the race. Ebert also pulled out of the race early as the top two in points had a tough night at the track. There were two attempts to restart on lap ten late in the race but once things settled back down Brockway went on to claim his third feature win of the year. A wild finish saw several changes for position as the field came to the checkered flag behind the leader. Montgomery finished in second position followed by Evinger and Brian Ziegler in third and fourth. Jason Billups originally crossed the line fifth but was later disqualified in post-race inspection. Paul West wound up in fifth position with Chris Stout sixth when all was said and done.

Fourteen Street Stock competitors took to the track next for their two heat races, which determined the line-up for the feature event later in the evening. Herb Dannar experienced problems with his car on the back straightaway but coasted to his third heat win of the year over Nic Bennett, John Ebert, John Miller, and Justin Metzner. Several strong runners competed in the second heat as Brian Johnson picked up his twelfth heat win over Michael Mullins, Chad Eickleberry, Clayton Campbell, and T.J. Faulkenberry finishing out the top five. Dannar and Johnson led the field to the green flag for the main event with Johnson quickly securing the lead. Lap-after-lap Dannar tried to make a move on Johnson but could not get the run he needed to take over the lead. Behind the lead pair, Michael Mullins and Chad Eickleberry raced hard for third and fourth positions with Mullins ultimately taking the position and then moving up behind Johnson to challenge for the win. Campbell spun on lap eight to bring out a caution flag and when the field went back to green-flag racing Mullins began to put pressure on Johnson up front. Despite several attempt Mullins could not make the pass and on a late-race restart mistakenly chose the high groove, which ultimately cost him a runner-up finish. Johnson went on to win his eighth feature of the year with Eickleberry coming home second. Bennett came across the line in fourth and with his best finish ever at CMS; Anthony Whitham finished in fourth place. Justin Metzner and Clayton Campbell rounded out the top six.

The closest championship battle at the track this season is in the ULMA Late Model division. Going into the night, Jon Binning and Randy Ainsworth were tied atop the track point standings. It took three heat races to pre-determine the feature race starting positions for the 18 cars on hand. In heat number one Jon Binning picked up heat win number four on the year ahead of Dwight Niehoff, Randy Ainsworth, Kevin Coyne, and new driver Lane Ehlert all the way over from Foristell, Missouri, near the St. Louis area. Steve Clancy secured his second heat win of the year in heat two over Walt Imhoff, Danny Monroe, Danny Lorton, and Derek Nevels. Bob King raced his way to his first heat win of the year ahead of Robbie Test, Shawn Rayfield, David Barker, and John Pipes in the final heat race. Binning and Clancy led the charge to the green for the main event with Binning quickly setting the pace. Clancy stayed close behind in second with King third. Robbie Test brought out the first caution with a spin in turn four as Binning still led on the restart with Clancy close behind. By lap six, Binning led Clancy, King, Imhoff, and Ainsworth inside the top five. One more caution flag flew midway through the race for debris but after that it was all green flag racing to the checkers as Binning took his second win in a row and third of the year at CMS. Clancy held on for second with Walt Imhoff recording his best run of the year at the track in third position. Ainsworth came away in fourth with Rayfield moving up from ninth to finish in the fifth spot at the line, Dwight Niehoff was sixth.

The ‘Mighty’ Modifieds were next up with their three qualifying heat races among the 21 cars signed in for action. Basehor, Kansas driver Tim Karrick won his fourth heat of the year in the first qualifying race with Aaron Marrant second, Jimmy Dowell third, Richard Layne fourth, and Chad Staus fifth. Donnie Dannar claimed the victory in heat race number two for his first heat win of the year, Luke Feeback, Dennis Elliott, Dean Wille, and Steve Twenter rounded out the top five. Heat number three had Dennis Walrath picking up his second heat win over Jason Thompson, Dave Meyer, Terry Schultz, and Terry Schnakenberg. Heat winners Karrick and Dannar paced the 20-lap modified main event with Karrick leading the initial laps just ahead of Dannar in second and Thompson third through lap number eight. On lap ten, Thompson used a high line to move toward the lead as a thrilling four-car battle shaped up between Karrick, Dannar, Meyer, and Thompson. A caution on lap nine slowed the field down and realigned the restart lineup with Dannar claiming second behind Karrick. It did not take long however for Thompson to charge back to the front and claim the top spot as the drivers battled three and four-wide for the win. Meyer moved past Karrick for second late in the race but shortly after his night came to a halt with a smoking car, which he had to pull into the infield. The field stayed green-flag racing until a lap 17 spin by Dennis Walrath brought out one last caution with Thompson still leading over Karrick. Thompson led the final few circuits to claim his third win of the year over Karrick in second, Dannar with his best run to third, Marrant finished fourth with Luke Feeback and Dean Wille rounding out the top six at the conclusion of the event.
