Last year, when CMS owners/promoters Earl and Susan Walls first announced the annual Independence Day weekend Tom Wilson Memorial Modified BBQ Bowl would pay $5,000 to the winner and feature a $40,000 payout purse, fans and drivers alike began to plan their holiday weekends around the highly anticipated event. Neither tough economic times nor high gas prices dampened the spirits of drivers who made their way to the track to compete or the record-breaking number of attendees that walked through the entry gates. Several track personnel heard from fans in the stands and drivers alike that they had witnessed one of the best two-day weekend events ever held in the Midwest for modified dirt-track racing. In a race named for the man who many believed helped bring the ‘mighty’ modifieds to the forefront in the Greater Kansas City area; it is safe to say the late Tom Wilson was proudly smiling over the entire race weekend at CMS.

Things got underway on Friday night when twelve cars transferred to the inside row starting positions for Saturday night’s 40-lap main event. Transferring in from Friday were Dustin Boney, Zack VanderBeek, Justin Boney, Aaron Marrant, Eric Turner, Donnie Dannar, Matt Johnson, Chad Lyle, Don Crnkovich, Joe Walker, Joshua Stephens, and Terry Phillips. After Friday night’s main event, Terry Phillips told track officials that he would try to re-qualify into the field again on Saturday night in order for a shot at improving his position, and ultimately gave up his twenty-third starting position for the feature race. This allowed Terry Schultz of Sedalia, who was the first alternate, to complete the 12-car transferring from night one action. Saturday night featured an all-new program for qualifying into the main event for the outside row starting positions through another a-main scramble event. The rarity of having two completely different programs for drivers to qualify into the big race during the two-day race weekend proved to be extremely exciting for the fans and probably just a little nerve-racking for the drivers hoping to just start Saturday night’s main event, which paid $1,000 just to take the green flag!

Forty-one modified drivers from five surrounding states signed in for night two competition, one more than the night before. With twelve cars already set for the field, this left twenty-nine modifieds to sort out the nights line-ups for the remaining b-mains and the scramble event in which twelve more drivers would move on. Passing points were used at CMS to add extra excitement to the evening’s races for the modifieds this past weekend where typically, a straight up pill draw is used at the track for weekly races. Three heat races filled to the brim with driving talent lined up as drivers tried to earn a starting position in the twelve remaining feature race starting spots. The blistering heat races were just a preview of what greeted the fans by the end of the night. Springfield, Missouri driver Jeremy Payne got things off to an exciting start in heat race number one and sailed to victory around the high side of the track ahead of his boss, Terry Phillips of Phillips Motorsports, also of Springfield, who finished second. Pole-sitter Scott Crystal settled for third with Tom Charles and Dean Wille rounding out the top five. Kerry Davis, who was the lone new driver to sign in, made a triumphant return to the CMS high banks by taking heat race number two, but not before some of the best racing of the night with Davis and Kelly Shryock ended with Shryock spinning as he was trying to make a low-side move under Davis off of corner four for the lead. Shryock, who is a multiple-time United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) champion, and defending champion of last year’s Tom Wilson memorial race, later had to try to qualify for the feature through a b-main event. Once things got back underway, Davis firmly stayed in control and won the race ahead of eighth-starting Jim Moody of Odessa, Missouri, Gene Claxton, Tim Karrick, and Jake Richards. In the third and final heat, Jason Bodenhamer stayed out front from his pole position throughout the race with a hard-charging USMTS regular Jake Neal of Omaha, Nebraska right on his bumper at the finish. Neal started in sixth and finished second behind Bodenhamer. Chad Kinder, Chad Staus and Joey Lile completed the top five.

After the heat races, the top six in total passing-points came to the front stretch to redraw for their a-main scramble starting spots. Jim Moody, who was the passing point’s champion of the night, drew starting spot number one for the scramble. Neal drew number five, Payne drew number four, Davis number three, Bodenhamer drew his car number two, and Phillips was left with number six. For the b-mains, several hot-shoe drivers were still left in the field in hopes of transferring. The top three in each b-main event went on to complete the twelve-car a-main scramble starting field. Veteran racer Gene Claxton raced his way in by narrowly holding off Dean Wille and Chad Kinder in b-main number one with Shryock missing the starting field by one position. Lee Hibner, Tim Karrick, and Jake Richards also fell short of transferring on. In b-main number two, Brandon Lennox held off Tom Charles and Allan Lawrence for the win, leaving Danny Charles, Chad Staus, and Scott Crystal as just a few of the drivers who ultimately were unable to transfer. With the a-main scramble line-up complete, Moody and Bodenhamer brought the field to the green flag with Davis and Payne in hot pursuit. The fifteen-lap event did not disappoint as Bodee maintained his lead with a furious battle between Moody and Payne in second and third and Davis and Neal in fourth and fifth. Bodenhamer held strong for a convincing win with Payne grabbing second at the checkers followed by Moody, Davis, Neal and Tom Charles. Bodenhamer’s win put him on the outside of row number one for the feature event.

Finally, the race everyone was waiting for hit the track with the best-of-the-best drivers on the speedway ready to go at it for forty laps. Pole-sitters Dustin Boney and Jason Bodenhamer brought the field to the start/finish line and along with the other twenty-two drivers set out in hopes of the big money. Dustin Boney grabbed the early lead with VanderBeek and Bodenhamer just behind. Brandon Lennox and Joshua Stephens became the first cars to exit the race after a caution flag on lap number five. Once green-flag racing resumed, D. Boney continued leading using the low-side with VanderBeek, and now a high-side running Payne in hot pursuit. Twenty fast and furious laps went by before the next caution flag with action all throughout the field. Kerry Davis was next to exit the race by lap ten followed by Claxton exiting on lap thirteen. Meanwhile up front, D. Boney, VanderBeek, Payne, Justin Boney, Bodenhamer and Eric Turner ran in the top six. Coming off of turn three just as the leaders were coming by to complete lap twenty-six, Bodenhamer’s car went around and brought out the second caution of the event, ultimately Bodenhamer was unable to finish after running in the top six for the first twenty-five laps. Once action resumed, it was clear that Payne had the high line working to his advantage as he and D. Boney ran side-by-side using two racing lanes. Phillips was the driver on the move with fifteen laps remaining as he made his way into the top six from his eighteenth starting position. Payne grabbed the lead away from D. Boney on lap twenty-eight but the pair still ran closely with VanderBeek, Justin Boney, Neal and Phillips battling close behind. By lap thirty-two, when the next caution flag flew, Dean Wille and Chad Lyle had exited the race. Crnkovich, Lawrence, and Matt Johnson were all involved in the caution flag, their second yellow-flag incidents of the night, and had to leave the race, which left fourteen cars to battle it out for the win. The race went straight to the checkered flags for the final few circuits with Payne maintaining the lead ahead of D. Boney, VanderBeek, Phillips, Justin Boney, and Jake Neal in the top six. Late in the race, Turner maneuvered his way into the top six with a pass on Neal in turn one. Payne held back a strong running D. Boney at the conclusion of the event with VanderBeek in third and narrowly edging out Phillips who finished fourth. Justin Boney was fifth, Turner, sixth, Neal seventh, Moody eighth, Joe Walker ninth, and Terry Schultz rounded out the top ten. In victory lane, Payne thanked his entire crew as they joined him in celebration in front of a large CMS crowd cheering on the night’s race winner and entire race program. It was definitely a race for the memory books for all of the drivers and fans in attendance.

Twenty-three B-modifieds were also in action during the evening and competed in three heat races to determine their a-main starting lineup. Rusty Trimble, Scotty Martin, and Steve Evans, with his first heat win of the year, all raced to victory lane in the qualifying heat races. In the main event, things got off to a rough start with Lucas Isaacs, Evans and birthday boy David Phillips all bringing out an early-race caution flag, which led to a complete re-start on the field. Evans and Isaacs were unable to continue once the race resumed. By lap seven, a fast-running Martin began to lap the slower cars as he threaded his way in and out of the traffic with Trimble in hot pursuit. Joshua Jacobs ran strong in the top five along with Mark Evinger and Jeremy Lile. Trimble eventually caught and passed Martin for the lead with Jacobs in on the action as well. Then, in what had to be one of the more bizarre things of the night, the entire top five runners were all involved in a turn four, lap-twelve yellow flag incident. Martin, Trimble, and Jacobs were trying to find a way around the lapped car of Charlie Palmer and all four cars could just not fit off of the corner and collected a few others in the process as the nearly the entire track was blocked with the involved cars. In the end, Trimble was unable to continue as he exited the track; Martin was also unable to continue and left the track later in the event. With just three laps remaining, the new leader was Bryan Montgomery as he brought Brian ‘Ziggy’ Ziegler, Jacob Ebert, and Michael Mullins back to green-flag action. Ziegler, who won four events last year, made the pass for the win on Montgomery on the white-flag lap and sailed on to his first feature win at CMS this year with Montgomery holding on for second. Jacob Ebert had another strong top-three run with Mullins, Bobby Raybourn, and Chad Eickleberry grabbing top six finishing positions once the checkered flags flew.

In ULMA late model action, seventeen drivers contested two separate qualifying heat races prior to their main event. Odessa, Missouri driver Steven Clancy had his machine hooked up the entire night and grabbed a convincing win in heat one ahead of Mike Ryun and Walt Imhoff. Current track point’s leader Jon Binning ran strong in heat two holding off Brett Wood and Allen Perryman at the line for his seventh heat-race victory of the year. Clancy and Binning got things going for the late models, with action immediately ensuing from the drop of the green flag. David Barker received a flat tire and was unable to continue in an incident off of turn one that also involved Randy Ainsworth and Shad Badder. Once the field sorted out Binning appeared to be heading on to his fifth victory of the year with Clancy, Ryan, Wood and Imhoff just behind. Brett Wood had one of his best CMS runs of the year with a move into third position on lap seven, just before Danny Monroe and Jason Sivils experienced mechanical troubles, which forced them both to the exit the race. Just before the restart, the overheating car of race leader Binning pulled off of the speedway leaving Clancy in control. Another quick restart after a spin by Perryman once again bunched up the field, with Clancy leading Wood and Mike Ryan back to the line. Shad Badder had made his way back up to the top four but pulled off of the track late in the event with three laps remaining. Although Wood pressured Clancy for the win until the final moments Clancy ultimately raced his way to his third-ever feature-race win at CMS over Wood in second and a hard-charging Kevin Coyne, who started eleventh, crossing the line in third. Behind the top three were Mike Ryan fourth, Imhoff in fifth, and David Angell with a strong run to round out the top six.
