Joe David Turner Takes First Ever NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Open Wheel Modified Win at Lake Cumberland

BURNSIDE, KY -- Joe David Turner was a man on a mission Saturday night at the Lake Cumberland Speedway as the Richmond, KY native led all 30 laps en route to winning his first ever NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Open Wheel Modified race.

After one aborted start, Joe David Turner got the lead from Justin Rattliff at the drop of the green flag and wasted no time in putting some real estate between himself and the rest of the field. Rattliff then watched in his rear view mirror as Joey Kramer, Jimmy Payne, and Kelly Warren raced behind him for third. Kramer and Payne swapped third several times throughout the early stages of the race before Payne took sole possession of the spot on lap 7. Payne then began tracking down Rattliff and would catch the break he needed on lap 11 when a caution for Brandon Clark slowed the field. When racing resumed, Payne used the Delaware double-file restart to his advantage moving around Rattliff and into second. One circuit later would find Rattliff caught up in an accident in turns one and two ending his evening as a red flag would be waved to clear the blocked race track.

On the restart, Turner now had Payne to contend with, but he didn't let the fast qualifier shake him. Turner once again pulled away from Payne, Kramer, Warren, and fifth-running Adam Cole. Behind the front five, a three-wide battle for sixth saw Tommy Bailey, Victor Lee, and 14th-starting Greg Payne puttin' on a show for the fans. The trio remain three-wide past the halfway point until lap 18 when Lee moved his ride into the spot.

With ten laps remaining, Jimmy Payne began quietly making a run on race-leader Turner. Hitting his marks on the high side of the speedway, Payne humbly sliced away at Turner's lead little by little. Behind them, current series point’s leader Joey Kramer has his hands full with defending series champion Kelly Warren.

Back up front, Turner encounter the back of the field with just seven laps to go with Payne closing in more and more every lap. With five laps remaining, his lead was down to six car lengths and with three laps to go, his advantage over Payne was just four car lengths. By the time the white flag was displayed, Payne had closed up to the rear decklid of the race leader. Payne shot high in turns one and two getting himself a great run down the backchute. As they entered turn three for the final time, Payne darted to the top and pulled even with Turner. Side-by-side for the win, they raced off turn four with Turner barely inching out Payne at the stripe.

The win was Joe David Turner's first ever with the NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Open Wheel Modified Series. Turner's Dale Meers powered Bob Pierce Race car carries sponsorship from D&M Auto Parts. In the pits after the race, Turner was tickled with the victory. "I've raced here for years in just about every class they have, so to win this race here at Lake Cumberland really means a lot to me. This is a good track and I know the guys hard work hard to keep it good and smooth," Turner said. "I have to thank my sponsors for their help and my family and crew for their hard work. You know, this car was in pieces today at 2pm. But we were able to stick a small motor in it and get it here just in time to race tonight."

Glasgow, KY native Jimmy Payne settled for second in his Barren River Pest control sponsored Lightning Chassis. Joey Kramer, Hanover, IN, took home third in his Kramer powered Lightning sponsored by Hill's Historic Painting and Super Shine Auto Detail & Window Tint. Columbia, KY veteran Kelly Warren was fourth in his Commonwealth Cancer Center/PBM Performance/Dale Meers/Bandit. Rounding out the top five was Campbellsville, KY's Adam Cole in the Cole Construction sponsored Dale Meers/Bandit. Victor Lee, Tommy Bailey, 14th-starting Greg Payne, Dennis Barton, and Keith Denny completed the top 10.

19 NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Open Wheel Modifieds were on hand with Jimmy Payne setting fast time during Racing Optics Time Trials. VP Fuels Makin' Power Heats were won by Joe David Turner and Justin Rattliff.

The next event for the NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Open Wheel Modifieds will be Saturday, July 16th as they travel to Sitka, KY for the second visit of the year to the 201 Speedway.
