Week 11 of the 20-week championship season is now in the books at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) as the track welcomed Heartland Waste and the Central Auto Racing Boosters (C.A.R.B.) for an action-packed night of side-by-side racing. A total of 76 cars signed in to compete in the four racing divisions with 17 modifieds, 16 late models, 18 street stocks and 25 b-modifieds on hand for the program, which included a total of 17 races. C.A.R.B., a local racing organization in the greater Kansas City area that was created to promote interest in and understanding of the sport of auto racing presented four drivers with special awards during the intermission time festivities. Johnny Ebert in the b-mods, Stephen Barber in the street stocks, Steven Clancy in the late models and Sonny Woods in the modifieds were awarded the special Larry Kaster driver appreciation awards for their randomly selected finishes in their respective heat races. Each C.A.R.B. member driver starting the A-main feature event also received special prize money from C.A.R.B. for their efforts. Also during intermission time several CMS drivers participated in a pass-the-helmet collection effort for injured driver Kevin Sloan. Over $500 was donated by the caring fans in the stands and the people in the pit areas in order to assist Kevin and his family. Another special moment happened when young Cody Hoffman, who had recently broken his leg, donated his 50/50 winnings to the Tyler Barker foundation. Tyler, the son of racer David Barker is awaiting an organ transplant. The races got off to a late start Saturday night as the track had to be re-worked but once the green flag fell on the first race it was a solid run through the 17 races, all the intermission time festivities and the trophy presentations in just over 3 hours.

As it has been nearly every week this year, the mighty modified feature was a nail biter right to the crossed-checkered flag finish. Three heat races were contested to sort out the main event lineup with James McMillin leading Alan Deatherage and Curt Potter in heat one. Dave Meyer out-dueled Joe Walker and Joe Cobb in heat two and Terry Schultz bested heat three ahead of Aaron Marrant and Jim Moody. For the 20-lap main event McMillan and Meyer paced the field with Meyer getting out to an early lead. McMillin held second for several laps until Walker was able to complete the pass around him. Great racing ensued for nearly every position during the feature event with Terry Schultz and McMillin fighting for third and behind them Deatherage and Marrant for fifth. Moody, Tim Karrick and Potter also battled hard just outside of the top six for the entire race as if they were racing for first. As the laps wore down Meyer’s lead began to dwindle as Walker was able to real the leader in from quite a ways back. With only a couple of laps to go, Walker used the lapped traffic to his advantage and was able to sneak by Meyer in a spectacular run down the front stretch to grab the lead from Meyer. On the white-flag lap, down the back straightaway, Meyer was able to sneak underneath Walker for one more try at the lead but he couldn’t make it stick coming off the final corner and in the end settled for second behind Walker, now a three-time feature winner. Behind the two leaders at the finish Schultz was third, McMillin fourth, Deatherage fifth and Marrant sixth. Moody, Karrick Potter and Joe Cobb rounded out the top ten.

For the late models there were also three heat races during the program. Jon Binning took heat one ahead of Jason Estes and Fred King with Bob King grabbing heat two ahead of Kevin Coyne and Brett Wood. Heat three had Brett Rollert taking the win over Steve McDowell and Ed Griggs. Pole sitters Binning and King led the field to turn one at the start of the 15-lap main event with King taking the early lead. An incident with the McDowell, Clancy and Wood cars brought out a lap three caution that regrouped the field. Upon the restart, Brett Rollert’s car was not up to full song and Kevin Coyne had nowhere to go and could not avoid contacting the Rollert car, which left both cars out for the night as a result of the contact. Binning, Clancy and Jason Sivils all experienced mechanical problems and were forced to retire early from the event. Jason Estes and Fred King had a great battle for many laps for the second spot with Estes finally sealing the deal late in the race. One more late-race caution regrouped the field one last time but Bob King’s car was too stout and he was able to pull away from the field over the final three circuits. King picked up his fifth feature-race victory ahead of Estes, Fred King, Ed Griggs with a great fourth-place finish, David Angell in fifth and Jamie Wineland sixth. On back to tenth at the line were Brandon Dunham, McDowell, Wood and Nevels.

In preparation for next week’s $1,000-to-win RSC Equipment Rental street stock special, the drivers in this class put on one of the best races of the night for the fans in the stands. Prior to the feature race taking to the track Adam Bush raced his way to his first heat race win of the year ahead of Nick Bennet and John Miller. The heat two victory went to Marc Carter ahead of Donnie Dannar and Tammy Korff with Herb Dannar besting heat three ahead of Chad Eickleberry and Brian Cox. Bush and Carter started on the front row for the 15-lap race with Carter quickly jetting out to the early lead ahead of a hard-charging Eickleberry. Carter led until his car suffered mechanical failure on lap six as the field came down the front stretch. Eickleberry inherited the lead but Nick Bennet was right there with him the whole way pressuring for the lead with Herb Dannar and Brian Johnson just behind. Donnie Dannar pulled off the track by lap ten as Brian Johnson began to make his way through the field. Late in the race Johnson was able to pull right on the back bumper of Eickleberry as the two battled hard for the lead. At the line, in what could be the closest finish of the last few years at CMS, it was Johnson who raced his way to his seventh feature victory of the year over Eickleberry. Bennet had a strong run to third with Herb Dannar finishing fourth. On back from the top four were John Miller in fifth, Korff sixth, Brett Nail seventh, Jeff Lazenby in eighth, Cox ninth and Bill O’Bryan tenth. Next week’s big-money race should bring out the best street stock drivers in the area to compete in the 25-lap feature event.

Another great field of b-modifieds were on hand at the ‘Burg for the night’s competition and it took several heat races to decide the starting positions for the 15-lap feature event. Joshua Jacobs, Bobby Raybourn, Darren Poston and Scotty Martin won their respective heat races. Darren Poston led the field to the finish in heat three ahead of Michael Mullins and Steve Evans. Unfortunately for Jacobs his car would not fire from the staging area prior to the main event and he was not able to compete in the race. That allowed Poston and Raybourn to carry the field to turn one at the drop of the green flag. Several early race incidents slowed the race, which eventually ended under the time limits. Josh McCullough, D.J. DeMotte, Robert Littrell, Chris Brockway, and Steve Evans all exited the race before lap six. Raybourn battled hard to stay in front of Martin, who was looking for his ninth feature race victory of the year. On lap eight Kline suffered a flat tire and was forced to exit the race just as Cliff Owings brought out a caution midway through the race. A great battle between newcomer Brad Smith and the Isaacs brothers went on for several laps until Smith finally was able to work his way solidly to third. Late in the race, Smith’s great run to the front also came to a halt with mechanical issues as he was also done for the night. By the this time Martin found himself once again leading a feature race and easily driving away for his ninth feature victory of the year ahead of Raybourn, Ethan Isaacs, Michael Mullins, Lucas Isaacs, and Jeremy Lile in the top six. Phil Wright, Johnny Ebert, Bob Dumit and John Kuecker were sixth thru tenth at the finish line.

Last year the street stock special race event was one of the most exciting races of the year. RSC Equipment Rental will be the night’s sponsor for the highly anticipated night at the races. So far in 2007 over 40 street stock drivers have competed at the track, who will win and who will show is anyone’s guess but the race is sure to be hotly contested right to the finish. Time and weather permitting we will have driver autographs during intermission, focusing on the street stock drivers. Normal admission prices will be in effect for next week’s races with general admission at $10, seniors 65 and up just $5, military and students with valid I.D. just $8, kids 6 to 12 at $5 and kids 5 and under free. Pit passes for next weekend are $20 with the admission and pit gates opening at 5 with hotlaps taking to the track at 7 and racing getting underway at 7:30. For current and up-to-the-minute racing information you can call the track report line by dialing (660) 747-2166. We’ll see you all again next Saturday night for the Street Stock Special event plus the ‘mighty’ modifieds, ULMA late models and b-modifieds all racing for the checkered flag! The track thanks all of its great fans and drivers for choosing CMS as the dirt of choice for Saturday night racing!
