Jon Binning of Warrensburg became the ninth different ULMA-sanctioned winner this season after he took the checkered flag last weekend at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). Binning, who finished third in the final standings in 2008 with four feature victories, drove his All Pro Electrical, Bodee's Race Bodies, M&N Consultants & General Contractors, Podium Inc., GRT #65 to victory lane for the first time this season. CMS and Butler Motor Speedway (BMS) were the only ULMA points-awarding tracks in action last weekend as inclement weather forced the cancellation of racing at both Lucas Oil Speedway and Callaway Raceway.

In the six weeks since late model racing returned to CMS, six different drivers have claimed top honors. Binning joined Evan Hubert, Larry Clawson Jr., Bob Test, Kevin Kaiser, and Steve Clancy as drivers that have visited victory lane at the track this year. Twenty-one ULMA member drivers were present of 23 total late models signed in for competition. Binning, Robbie Test, and Jake Williams, who made his first CMS visit this year, claimed the three heat races contested. For the feature event, Binning and Test brought the huge field of cars to the initial green flag with Binning taking the initial lead thru a series of re-starts. From the onset it was clear Binning’s car was dialed in as he maintained his lead for a fast-paced twelve laps of racing with Jake Williams close behind in second position. Behind the leaders, Robbie Test and Kevin Coyne held strong in the top five. Test ran too close to one of the corner tires off corner four and his night ended when his car received too much damage to continue. After the ensuing yellow flag an unfortunate series of mishaps slowed the field several times as the remaining three laps of the race were plagued by spinning cars and race contact. Through all of the late-race excitement, Binning and Williams resumed their battle to the checkered flag as Binning held on for the win over Williams at the line. Coyne’s solid top-three run came to a halt after contact with another competitor sent his car over the race cushion and into the hot-pit lane on the back straightaway. Dwight Niehoff’s top-ten run to the checkered flags came to a halt right before the finish line due to contact in a separate last-lap incident. Rounding out the top five finishers at race end was David Barker, Kaiser, and Clancy. CMS once again hosts another week of racing action this Saturday night, June 27. Log onto the track’s official Web site www.centralmissourispeedway.net for complete CMS coverage, start times, and admission information.

The only other ULMA points-earning event held last weekend was the event last Friday at BMS. Excelsior Springs’ driver Randy Ainsworth raced his way to another strong run at the speedway and as a result now finds himself in the fifth position in the overall ULMA standings with thirteen starts this year. Mark Selsor finished a strong sixth in the BMS feature for his best run of the year. BMS returns to action Friday, June 26. For more information log onto www.butlermotorspeedway.webs.com; for additional information call (816) 618-3691, on race day call (816) 738-9433. BMS is located 45 minutes south of Kansas City off Hwy 71 in Butler, MO.

Racing is scheduled to return this Friday, June 26, at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri. If Friday's races are cancelled due to weather, the races will be made up on Sunday, June 28th. For additional track information log onto the track's official Web site at www.callawayraceways.com.

Lucas Oil Speedway is having a special event this weekend with touring modifieds and travelling late models. ULMA will not be awarding points at Lucas Oil Speedway Saturday, June 27. For complete details, see the track’s latest press release at www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

Despite his troubles at CMS, Robbie Test still holds onto the lead in the overall standings but Kaiser is closing in quick. The top two in points both run INCE chassis. Test has now started discounting his worst finishes of the year since he has now crossed the fifteen starts threshold. Kaiser and Coyne, who are second and third in points both have 13 starts with fourth-running Danny Lorton having started 14 events. Ainsworth, Bob Test, Niehoff, Schlup, Williams and Clancy round out this week’s top ten. ULMA drivers keep their fifteen best finishes at the end of the year and begin discarding finishes as they improve placements during remaining events.
