(September 5, 2015) – Ricky Thornton, Jr., raced back to IMCA Modified victory lane at Canyon Speedway Park on Saturday night while David Jones and Matt Martinez split victory honors in the opening portion of the two-night “Stock Car 100 Shootout” atop the 1/3-mile clay oval in the Phoenix area.
Other opening night winners of the Labor Day weekend double at CSP included Chuck Thornton in Renegades, Chaz Baca, Jr., in Mod Lites and Tony Martin in Dwarf Cars.
The “Stock Car Shootout 100” concludes Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. with the $2,000-to-win 100 lap Pure Stock feature event headlining the card that also includes IMCA Modifieds, Renegades, Mod Lites and Dwarf Cars.
In Saturday’s Arizona Differential Pure Stock action, Ty Warner opened the “Stock Car Shootout 100” portion of the weekend by turning the quickest qualifying lap of 17.898 seconds over a field of 27 entries.
With the field set for a pair of 15-lap Shootouts that set the stage for Sunday’s 100-lap finale, pole starter David Jones wired the field to win the first qualifying shootout ahead of Daren Olney and quick-timer Warner.
Second quickest in qualifying, Matt Martinez raced from the sixth starting position to win the second 15-lap qualifying shootout ahead of defending “Stock Car Shootout 100” champion Ricky Thornton, Jr., and Zack Madrid.
In 9th World Vapors IMCA Modified action, Thornton, Jr., rallied from the tenth starting position to take command at the midway point en route to his sixth overall CSP win of the season in the Modified ranks ahead of Guy Thornton, George Fronsman, Bo Partain and 13th-starter Steve Stultz.
Chuck Thornton raced from the third row outside to his first Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Renegade score of the year ahead of Chris McCurdy, Jr., with Dustin Way, Daniel Romero and Chris McCurdy, Sr., also in the top five.
Chaz Baca, Jr., raced from the eighth starting position for his first AMA Mod Lite win of the year at CSP ahead of Tyler Merrill and 11th-starter Brenden Priest while Tony Martin picked up his second consecutive CSP win in Dwarf Car action by racing to the checkered flag in front of Cory Brown and 17th-starter Steve Kapaun.
